biorobotics
TRANSCRIPT
Bio-Robotics is defined as the
collective study of CYBERNETICS,
BIONICS and even GENETIC
ENGINEERING .
Bio-robotics is often used to refer to a real subfieldof robotics: studying how to make robots thatemulate or simulate living biological organismsmechanically or even chemically.
The term is also used in a reverse definition:
making biological organisms as manipulatable
and functional as robots, or making biological
organisms as components of robots.
In the latter sense bio-robotics can be referred to
as a theoretical discipline of comprehensive
genetic engineering in which organisms are
created and designed by artificial means.
The creation of life from non-living matter for
example, would be bio-robotics. The field is in
its infancy and is sometimes known as
synthetic biology or bio-nanotechnology.
“Animal Like” robots are playing anincreasingly important as a link between theworlds of biology and engineering.

The new, multidisciplinary field of bio-robotics
provides tools for biologists studying animal
behavior and movements.
An animal is profoundly affected by the many
subtle and complex signals within its environment,
and because the animal invariably disturbs its
environment, it constantly creates a new set of
stumuli .
The field is now enabling biologists to
understand these complex animal-
environment relationships to make Bio-robots.
There are several applications of
Bio-robotics:
Tactical Military use.
For Disabled People.
Make advancements in the fields of Biology,
Engineering, Computer Sciences, and many
other science fields.
A bipedal jumping and landing robot with
artificial musculoskeletal system inspired on an
animal(frog) has been presented. Experiments
showed the abilities of the robot to realize vertical
jumping.
A new bio-inspired climbing robot designed to
scale smooth vertical surfaces has been presented.
The robot, called Stickybot, draws its inspiration
from geckos and other climbing lizards and
employs similar compliance and force control
strategies to climb smooth vertical surfaces.
A humanoid two-arm
system developed as a
research platform for
studying dexterous two-
handed manipulation. Two
arms and hands are
combined with a three
degrees-of-freedom
movable torso and a visual
system to form a complete
humanoid upper body.
Currently BCI or Brain Computer
Interface allows the use of
computers by the physically
handicap by taking signals directly
from the brain.
Sensors hooked to the motor cortex of
the brain enable monkeys to operate
the robotic arm in the same manner as
their biological arm.
“Sarcos Soldier Exoskeleton”
-An exoskeleton which allows
soldiers to do strenuous activity
without tiring.
DSO’s Revolutionizing Prosthetics Program
-Gives amputees the ability to move an
attached prosthetic device using direct brain
control.
