Who should attend? One of the most exciting challenges of biorefining is the range of industries and expertise it requires. Pira’s annual conference is well-known as the key place to meet all key players in this multi-discipline new industry. If you work for a pulp and paper mill, a technology provider, a government agency, a raw materials provider, or are a consultant, researcher or academic in this field, this conference is not to be missed. Typically, senior level staff with responsibility for business development, technical, process engineering or R&D has found the programme of utmost significance and benefit.

Visit www.biorefining-conference.com for the detailed programme of these two conferences.

Pre-conference workshop: Tuesday 23 February 2010: 13.00 – 17.00

Designing the Sustainable Biorefinery• Defining metrics for the sustainable biorefinery• The basics of applying LCA for environmental

biorefinery evaluation• Biorefinery case study applications: North America• Biorefinery case study applications: Scandinavia

Implementing the biorefinery is a company transformation for most forestry companies, and so requires a more complex analysis that typically used for capital appropriation. This short course is intended for corporate and mill management, as well and consultants and suppliers who wish to better understand how the environmental component of biorefinery strategies can be addressed. The course will present an overview of the state-of-the-art in life cycle assessment (LCA), and identify particular methodologies that are suitable for evaluating biorefinery strategies.

Lead by: Prof Paul Stuart, Professor, ÉCOLE POLYTECHNIQUE DE MONTRÉAL, and President, PROCESSYS INC, Canada Prof Anne-Marie Tilman, Professor, CHALMERS UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, Sweden

3rd annual Biorefining for the Pulp & Paper Industry

Programme Advisory Board Members• Dr Hans Grundberg, Development Engineer,

• Dr Juha Anttila, Director – Process Technology, CHEMPOLIS, Finland

• Graham Moore, Strategy Manager, PIRA INTERNATIONAL, UK

• Dr Markku Karlsson, Senior VP, Technology, UPM KYMMENE, Finland

Today’s bi-products as tomorrow’s high value revenue stream

Presentations from:

The long-term survival of the pulp and paper industry is interestingly now no longer solely linked to a fragile mass consumer demand for paper-based products such as catalogues, books and newspapers. Challenged by this unsustainable and cyclical driver in recent decades, there is now a new and vital reason for the survival of pulp and paper mills – transformation into biorefineries capable of producing sustainable, low carbon chemicals and fuels.

The concept and the technology of biorefining is not brand new, but the harsh realisation that without biorefining, many pulp and paper mills might not survive, definitely is.

Pira’s 3rd Biorefining conference comes at a time when papermakers have decided that the time to act is now. Time to identify partners, time to select technologies, time to review different business models, and time to listen to those who have already become involved to see what lessons can be learned. Ensure you are part of this strategic change in direction for the industry by attending this timely and comprehensive conference.

Thursday 25 February 2010: 14.00 – 17.30

The EuroFEX Pilot Paper Machine Plant Site VisitAt the end of the second conference day, all delegates and speakers will have the opportunity to tour Innventia’s state-of-the-art new stock preparation plant located in stockholm city centre, a very short journey from the conference hotel. During the tour, delegates will also have the opportunity to see a poster session describing the plant, the work Innventia are doing, as well as the opportunities the plant gives to the customer. Drinks and refreshments will be provided.

Equipment in the new plant • Hydrocyclone fractionation• screen fractionation• Fibre filter for fines separation• Three LC-refiners• Two disc filters• Bow screen• Two new pulp storage tanks

The new EuroFEX stock preparation plant, which opens in December 2009, is a complete pilot-scale papermaking facility serving the pulp and paper industry and its suppliers with process studies, product development and evaluation of new technology and raw materials.

For more information about the EuroFEX Plant or the site visit, log onto www.refining-conference.com

Who should attend? The programme will be of benefit to those working in R&D, technical, engineering, process control and environmental areas within pulp and paper mills. It is also relevant to researchers, academics, and suppliers of machinery, chemicals and equipment to the pulp and paper industry.

Never before has the refining process been put under so much scrutiny by the papermaking industry. Not only is a myriad of global research being undertaken into ways of making refining more energy efficient, but process optimisation and control is vital. This 11th biennial conference comes at a critical time when fibre engineering research is at its all-time peak and the pressure to find energy efficient solutions and ultra-optimised processes has never been greater.
