The IBS Graduate Program is now offering a poster printing service for affiliates of UAB.Our low cost, fast turnaround time, and convenient location quickly makes us a popularalternative to for-profit printers like Kinko's.

To avoid delay, posters need to be submitted for printing at least two business days inadvance of when they are needed, and we strongly suggest you allow additional time priorto large conferences. As always, posters are printed on a first-come, first-served basis.

    1. Click File >> New >> Blank Presentation >> (blank lay-out)

    2. Click File >> Page Setup >> (enter poster size). The size you choose shouldfollow conference guidelines and be an appropriate size for your data. Our paperroll is either 36 or 42" wide (height), so although your poster can be up to56" long (PowerPoint's maximum), the width must be 42" or less.**

    3. Turn on guidelines to help you line up your figures and text boxes. Click

View >> Guides to display a moveable horizontal and vertical guideline. Theselines will NOT appear in your poster, but will help you line up text boxes andfigures. If you're using a PC, you can also turn guidelines on and off by right-clicking on the mouse.

    4. Turn on rulers to help you maintain a 1/2 to 1" margin of white space on allsides of your poster. Click View >> Ruler to display the rulers. PC users can turnrulers on and off by right-clicking the mouse.

    5. Leaving a 1/2-1" margin on all sides, create your poster as you would a slideusing the guidelines outlined in the Advice & Tips section.

**Posters that need to be longer than 56" can be printed with an additional chargeof $10.00. You will need to set your poster parameters at 1/2 the original size. For example, a poster that needs to be 42" x 72" should be set at 21" x 36".

If you have created slides using PowerPoint, you will find that it isn't difficult to createa poster. However, what you see on the monitor is not always what you get when theposter is printed on the poster printer. We have compiled this list of tips to help youavoid common mistakes that lead to printing errors. Please use these guidelines whencreating your poster.

All posters should be submitted 2 business days in advance of pick-up time. Prior tolarge scientific meetings, we suggest that you allow additional time.

Add a 1/2 to 1" border of white space on all sides of your poster to accommodatevariations in printing.

Use standard fonts like Arial or Times New Roman; other fonts may not printcorrectly.

Type all special characters (e.g. Greek/mathematical symbols) directly in PowerPoint

rather than copying and pasting them in from another document. We have found thatspecial characters pasted into PowerPoint have a tendency to print incorrectly eventhough the character displays correctly on the monitor. Insert special characters byclicking Insert >> Symbol >> [character].

Make sure that text boxes are on the page. Even if the text appears on the page, the textbox may extend beyond the edge and cause the text to shift when printed.

Where are you located? The poster printing service is in Shelby 120E (first floor).

How much does it cost? $25.00 per poster ($10 surcharge for non-white backgrounds)

Why do I have to review my poster before you print it? What you see on your

monitor is not always what you get when the poster is printed. Following our Technical

Specifications and Advice & Tips will minimize problems, but we still prefer that you

review your poster as it looks on our monitor and grant final approval.

Do I need an appointment to drop off my poster? Appointments are not required, butif we are away when you stop by, you can sign up on a list to have a staff member contact

    you when he/she returns.

What is the turnaround time for printing? Posters need to be submitted for printing at

least two business days in advance of when they are needed, and we strongly suggest that

you allow additional time (2-4 days) prior to large conferences. We will call or e-mail

you if your poster is ready earlier.
