Materials needed:

1. Your journal 2. A Chrome Book

● Working with a partner, research and record the following: A. What is orthopedic biomedical engineering?

B. What are at least 5 causes for loss oflimbs or amputation in people?

● Record your sources.

Day 1

Page 3: Biomedical Engineering 101 A S.T.E.M. CHALLENGE. Materials needed: 1.Your journal 2.A Chrome Book ● Working with a partner, research and record the following:

Before starting the steps of engineering:

● Discuss with your engineering team what questions you will need to answer.

● Record on the “Questions and Answer” form. You may add to this form as new questions develop.

Questions

1. Share with your other table partners what you discovered about orthopedic biomedical engineering and reasons for amputation and loss of limbs.

2. Choose a recorder and as a group complete the form, “What is Orthopedic Biomedical Engineering and Reasons for Loss of Limbs”

Hi, Here is a link to the MAKE Magazine article about making a prosthetic hand. I was not able to edit the document?!?!?! http://makezine.com/magazine/make-43/how-made-my-250-robotic-arm/

Page 8: Biomedical Engineering 101 A S.T.E.M. CHALLENGE. Materials needed: 1.Your journal 2.A Chrome Book ● Working with a partner, research and record the following:

1. Brainstorm: Team generates as many possible ideas.

2. Plan: Team decides on the plan that will be implemented

3. Drawings: Team creates elaborate drawings, sketches, labeling of the design, size, material used.

4. Build: Team builds prototype of the prosthesis.5. Test: Team tests the prosthesis for ability to

function to specification.6. Iteration: Team makes all necessary

modifications to ensure best design and functionality.

Steps in Engineering

Page 9: Biomedical Engineering 101 A S.T.E.M. CHALLENGE. Materials needed: 1.Your journal 2.A Chrome Book ● Working with a partner, research and record the following:

Challenge:

Using your knowledge of the skeletal and muscle systems:

Your biomedical engineering team will design a functioning prosthetic hand (full arm design is bonus points) that can pick up an object teacher chooses.

Day 3 - Intro to Challenge

Page 10: Biomedical Engineering 101 A S.T.E.M. CHALLENGE. Materials needed: 1.Your journal 2.A Chrome Book ● Working with a partner, research and record the following:

You need to build a prosthetic hand using suitable household materials.

Things to consider

•Your hand(arm) must be actual size.

•It must be solid and robust - does not break easily.

•It can pick up the object chosen by teacher.

•It should be well presented, looks polished and professional.

● It can have artwork that reflects the client’s needs.

Design Plans

Directions: Designers do intricate drawings of the prototype they are creating. This includes precise labels, materials used in that portion of the design. It is from these precise drawings that architects and engineers build their model. As a team, record your preliminary design drawings below. If you do revisions, number pages and staple to original.
