The project included the complete replacement of the
fuel reveiving, storage, and retrieval systems for a
wood-fired boiler. HGA was selected to perform the
detailed engineering for the new fuel handling and
delivery system. The design was for the system to
be able to process and store 150 tons per hour of a
wide variety of incoming wood material - ranging from
finely ground sawdust to blocks 108 inches long. The
major components of the system included a new truck
dumper, screen and grinder, a circular stacker reclaimer,
and all of the interconnecting conveyors to supply the
biomass to a new fuel bin in the boiler building. HGA
also supplied expertise in construction management to

Hunt, Guillot & Associates was contracted by

the installation of a new heat energy system
at their Jefferson, TX Oriented Strand Board
mill. This project was a strategic effort to
better utilize biomass fuel and increase
overall capital gains by reducing the mill’s
dependency on natural gas. The nearly $30
million investment reduced the mill’s gas
consumption by approximately 70 percent
and reduced the company’s global natural
gas consumption by nearly 25 percent.
projEct dEscription
The project included the complete replacement of an
existing natural gas/wood waste fired heat energy system
that supplied heat to two existing OSB flake dryers and
thermal oil to the press. HGA was responsible for the
overall project plant layout and coordination. This task
included designing foundations, electrical grounding,
structural steel equipment supports, ductwork, new
fuel and flake conveyors, and an MCC building. To
minimize production downtime during construction, HGA
designed the layout around existing equipment and met
the challenge of routing ductwork at elevations of 60 feet

Mirant Corporation currently dumps ash

beneficiation facility in Maryland would allow
recycling of up to 400,000 tons of fly ash into
concrete. The proposed technology was
developed by The SEFA Group and burns
away 100% of the organic carbon from the
ash creating a material that requires less
cement when producing concrete.
projEct dEscription HGA has worked with The SEFA Group on previous
installation. Mirant has retained HGA as their owner’s

and engineering and construction are underway and
expected to be completed in the spring of 2011.
As owner’s engineer, HGA was responsible for
conceptual engineering for all disciplines and for all
