Narrative of Incumbency as BIOTA President

Once upon a time, not so long ago, but long enough especially for the millennials here, I was the BIOTA President. That was from 1995 – 1999. I was elected President during the convention at PSHS in 1995 and during that convention, the group from the Uni-versity of Northern Philippines right away signified its desire to host the next convention. So in 1996, it was Vigan for us. Then in 1997, we held our convention in Far Eastern University and in 1998, we had it in Central Luzon State Univer-sity in Munoz, Nueva Ecija. In 1999 we were back to Manila and Centro Escolar University hosted our convention then. Those were wonderful years, full of new developments and advances in Biology. It was during this time for example when Dolly, the sheep was cloned and gene sequencing was the in thing. So our convention themes then where about Research and Technology, Information Age, and Biology in the 3

rd Millennium.

We were able to have our first data base of members list. Then we had a collaboration with DOST Science Education for some research. I cannot remember the title of our research anymore. All I can remember is that Dr. Crescencia Joaquin who came before me as BIOTA President, was the one who initially approached Science Education about this research. Then we implemented everything during my term as president. One of the most significant activity that happened during my term, was the hosting of the 17

th Biennial Conference of

the Asian Association for Biology Education (AABE) on December 1998. I think this was only the 2nd

time that the Philippines served as host for the AABE Biennial Conference. This was held at the now defunct Philippine Village Ho-tel. I turned over the baton as president to Dr. Catherine Lagunzad during the convention at the Centro Escolar University in 1999. Salvacion P. Angtuaco, Ph.D. BIOTA President, 1995 - 1999

EXPERIENCES DURING INCUMBENCY AS BIOTA PRESIDENT It was during the 20

th Annual BIOTA Convention held in Adamson University in Manila when I was elected/gifted with

the highest position in the Biology Teachers Association of the Philippines. All thanks is due to the handiwork of then BIOTA president, Lucille C. Gregorio, who was slated to leave for a UNESCO post in Jakarta, and who wanted a hand in choosing her successor.

Knowing full well how unselfish and dedicated my fellow BIOTA board members were, I bravely embraced the chal-lenge. They did not disappoint. They never let me down. And thus, with a united and committed board, BIOTA sailed on to fulfill its mandate to the biology teachers of the country.

Board members cum officers Lilian Alfonso and Vicky Reyes were their characteristic enthusiastic selves, full of bright Ideas and with action to go with their words. With such personalities, how could BIOTA fail? Alice Claustro always safeguarded the BIOTA coffers. A Saturday afternoon meeting usually culminated with a few cookies and a bottle of soft drink each. Our out-of-town board members shouldered their own transportation expenses. Nonetheless, nothing dampened the spirit of that BIOTA board.

The out-of-town BIOTA national convention, the 21st, was held in Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University in

Bacnotan, La Union. The BIOTA contingent was received in style by the university officials led by the university presi-dent, Dr. Bienvenido Agpaoa, and were accorded warm Filipino hospitality. Dr. Carmen Kanapi, a BIOTA founding member, was with group. The plenary sessions were held in the main campus with field trips in all the different DMMMSU campuses.

The venue of the 22’nd BIOTA national convention was in Maryknoll College, Quezon City. Professor Pablo J. Alfon-so, one of the BIOTA founders and Charter President, actively participated in the convention. The officials and admin-istration of Maryknoll College gave full support to the convent activities. With the total support of every officer and board member, plus the other pillars of BIOTA, the 22

nd annual convention proceeded smoothly.

The field trip of that 22nd

BIOTA convention was a visit to Malacañang Palace. Coming just a few months after EDSA, I believe every participant joined. What an exciting way to end a BIOTA convention!

international symposium on biodiversity as economic resource

An international symposium on biodiversity hosted by the Department of Biology, School of Science and Engineer-ing, brought together fifty participants from 14 institutions.

The International Symposium on Biodiversity as Economic Resource—Innovative Exploitation for Science and Socie-ty was held on January 18, 2016 at Faber Hall, Ateneo de Manila University. The gathering serves as a platform for linking biodiversity, natural compound research and bioe-conomy.

A core aim was to discuss to generate more value from biodiversity data and collections by making them available to all potential stakeholders - public and private, research institutions and companies. NGO’s and government offic-es.

The occasion was organized by Department of Biology in collaboration with the Biology Teachers Association of the Philippines (BIOTA) Ateneo de Manila Chapter and the Museum fur Naturkunde (Museum of Natural History)Berlin, Germany.

After the introduction and welcome remarks, five sessions of interesting and enlightening talks focused on “Integrated biodiversity assessment”, “Biodiversity infor-mation systems and molecular data.”, “Biodiversity reposi-tories”, “Innovative screening technique for natural com-pounds” and “Microbial cultures and search for new natu-ral compounds”.

The free symposium was made possible by funding of German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Loyola school Internationalization Program of the Ateneo de Manila University. It continues the effort in ca-pacity building by the BIOPHIL project initiative to estab-lish a consortium for biodiversity research with Philippine and German institutions.

The Biolo- gy Teachers Association of the

Philippines-Bicol Chapter successfully hosted the 5th An-

nual Regional Convention & Scientific Sessions from Sep-tember 25-27, 2015 at the Department of Education Con-ference Hall, Daet, Camarines Norte. With the theme “Paradigm Shift in the Curriculum: Challenges and Oppor-tunities for Biologists”, the event had critical attendance of teachers, researchers, students, and other stakeholders of Biology in the Bicol Region. The three-day activities that generally included plenaries, concurrent sessions, and educational tour.

Dr.

Edna Amparado, president of BIOTA-Philippines Inc., de-livered the keynote lecture on the role of genetics and en-vironmental factors in human growth and development. Plenary talks were given by speakers in the fields of bio-logical education and research: (1) Teaching and Learn-ing Creatively in Science Using Inquiry Based Approach and Differentiated Instruction (by Dr. Noel Ibis of Depart-ment of Education, Camarines Norte Division); (2) “Facilitating Students’ Understanding of Biological Con-cepts: The Use of Evidence in Constructing Explana-tions” (by Dr. Rodolfo Treyes of NISMED, UP Diliman); (3) “Conative Problem-Based Inquiry: Effects on Self-Direction, Self-Regulation, and Achievement in Biolo-gy” (by Dr. Agnes Salvadora of Ateneo De Naga Universi-ty); and (4) “Less is More; The Taxonomically Captivating Story of Stingless Bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponini) in the Philippines” (by Dr. Amelia Nicolas of Central Bicol State University of Agriculture). The scientific sessions became a venue for sharing of research updates and trends on teaching practices in the region. Call for papers was launched prior to the conven-tion, and submissions ranged from pedagogical studies on K-12 science curriculum implementation to researches in natural or applied biology including emerging trends and technologies. A total of 15 papers were selected for final presentations that were clustered into (1) Biodiversity-Fauna; (2) Natural Products and Bioactivities; (3) Biodiver-sity and Ecological Services-Flora; (4) Biological Applica-tions; and (5) Issues in Education and Public Health. Aside from the above-mentioned academic endeavors, attendees had a chance to participate in an on-site learn-ing experience at Labo Progressive Multi-Purpose Coop-erative where they received lectures on the history, thrusts, and development of the organization, witnessed the manufacture of its flagship products (e.g., pineapple juice, textiles, paper), shopped local merchandise, and immersed with the officers and members of the flourishing cooperative. They also joined in a fun-filled fellowship night of relaxing dinner, songs, and games for team-building and camaraderie. The convention also facilitated the registration and oath taking of new regular and life- time BIOTANs who pledged their support to the strong regional membership. The over-all success of the event was made possible through the efforts of BIOTA-Bicol Board headed by Dr. Ramona Re-negado. The BIOTA FEU Chapter held a general meeting last Jan-uary 25, 2016 at room 208 Science Bldg. FEU Manila Campus. The agenda of the meeting included a financial report from 2013 to the current year, upcoming Annual Convention, and election of new set of officers. The meeting was presided by the current chair of the Bio-logical Sciences Department and current auditor of BIOTA Philippines, Dr. Glorina G. Orozco. She presented the chapter’s expenses and rebates from the past convention of which FEU hosted.

An invitation was extended to the members of the chapter on the upcoming 51st Annual Convention. New set of offic-ers were elected to head the chapter since the past chap-ter president retired from FEU last October, 2015. The meeting concluded with the Oath Taking ceremonies of

the newly elected officers. The FEU Chapter co sponsored a documentary film of Discovery Channel on Racing Extinction last January 19-21, 2016 at the FEU mini auditorium. The film highlighted on crucial issues of endangered species and mass extinc-tion of organisms. It also emphasized on climate change and destruction of natural resources.

The BIOTA - Liceo de Cagayan Chapter organized a

line up of activities for SY 2015-2016 that aimed at involv-

ing the community in its pursuit of protecting and promot-

ing environmental and health awareness, an advocacy of

Dr. Lesley Casas Lubos, founder of the Association.

These activities helped the Association and the Cagayan

de Oro City community restore coastal areas in Cagayan

de Oro City and inform the various barangays to prevent

mosquito-dengue outbreaks.

Mangrove Trees, salt-tolerant evergreen coastal forests

which can provide protection against cyclones and flood-

ing, were planted along the shores of barangays that are

the city’s critical coastal ecosystems. This is to help pre-

vent another tragic experience just like when the tropical

cyclone Sendong ravaged some areas in the city. The

series of mangrove tree planting activities were participat-

ed by the Liceo Mindanao Center for Biodiversity and

Conservation (LIMCEBCON), Biology and Natural Sci-

ence students from Liceo de Cagayan University, baran-

gay officials, and volunteers from the various barangays.

Monitoring of the planted mangrove trees to ensure their

growth is one of the activities throughout the school year. Furthermore, the on-going intense campaign drive for

Mosquito-Dengue Prevention has kept the hands of

BIOTA Officers full. The campaign program is partnered

with Sahaya International, the Mosquito-Dengue Fighters

Association of the Philippines (MDFA), and the Liceo Cen-

ter for Community Development (LCCD). Training-

workshops, seminars, and symposia on Dengue Aware-

ness were given to the various departments in Liceo de

Cagayan University as well as in the various barangay

communities in the city wherein participants were in-

formed on the latest researches regarding mosquito-

dengue carriers and taught how to use the OVITRAP to

capture mosquitoes.

“Keeping the Knowledge of Fire Burning” By: Dr. Josephine D. Agapito

Biology Department University of the Philippines- Manila

Today BIOTA is celebrating its golden years With the same passion since its very beginning “Keeping the knowledge of fire burning” In the pursuit of success for nation building

Indeed it is with great pride and honor For BIOTA to reach the Golden years so full of life The zeal and passion of teachers for nurturing the minds Has never diminished in the passage of time

Through the Annual convention and Scientific Sessions Biological researches were highlighted and known BIOTA has become a venue for intellectual dis-cussions Which continue to fuel a lot of successful collabo-rations

Biota has become a network of Biology teachers Whose members are all determined to make a difference Instilling the significance of Biology among stu-dents Inspiring them to continue the knowledge instilled to them

It is with much pride and gratitude to all the lead-ers Including salutations for all its active members Who made possible for BIOTA to succeed And looking forward to putting it in even greater heights ahead

Thus, this special occasion of BIOTA GOLDEN Anniversary Will serve as a significant landmark for BIOTA history Celebrating good harvest for the fruits of labor through unity Coupled with an immeasurable love and passion
