Biological Levels of Study

Unit: 1

Molecular Level

• Biologist in this level study the basic chemical units of life.

• They may investigate the effects of certain drugs on organisms.– Geneticists– Molecular Biologist

Cellular Level

• On this level biologist study organisms on the cellular level.

• They investigate the normal functions of a cell and explore the impact of cancer, radiation, cigarette smoking, etc. have on the cell.– Cytologist– Microbiologist

Multi-cellular Level

• Biologists on this level go beyond the cell to study multi-cellular organisms.

• They would be interested in behavior, physiology, anatomy, etc.– Zoologist– Physiologist

Population Level

• On this level biologists study the interaction between individual organisms, groups of organism, and their interaction with their environment.– Ecologists– Psychologist

Global Level

• On this level biologist take a worldwide view of organisms and their environment, especially the effects of organisms on the world environment.– Global Ecologist
