Current pharmaceutical methods are not impacting major disease markets – stem cell based regenerative medicine is believed to be the answer

• More than 100 million people suffer from ”western diseases” in the US alone

• Many of these conditions are difficult to cure or even treat with currently available therapies

• Regenerative medicine is believed to be the answer

There is a big need for quality stem cell matrix solutions since many products are of low quality

Stem cells need be grown on a special supporting structure (a growth matrix) in order to keep them alive and expanding

Difficult to grow

The existing matrices have problems with meeting regulatory guidelines (FDA/EMEA), which hinders clinical trials and blocks the approval process for new medicines

Existing solutions are not approved

It is well known that results vary between batches – a concern for both scientists and regulatory officials

Existing solutions are of limited scientific use

Laminins are the natural matrix for almost all cell types

• family of 15 isoforms

• major component of basal

lamina in vivo

• tissue-specific distribution

• cell adhesion, migration,

proliferation and differentiation

• Impossible to purify from tissues in native forms

The ability of a single molecule to promote mES cell growth is unique

On LN-511:

• Stable proliferation rate

> 5 months > 30 passages

On LN-111, LN-411, Matrigel, Gelatin, Poly-D-Lysine:

• Proliferation ceased within two weeks

• ES cells either differentiated or died

Almost all hES cells are pluripotent after 5 months in culture and grow as monolayers

Page 16: BioLamina technology presentation

ES cells grow as monolayers most likely because ES cells have a higher affinity for Laminin-511 than any known other matrix

Recombinant laminins can help drive stem cell research forward

1. Defined proteins give reliable and repeatable research results

2. Biological specificity allows to make relevant conclusions

3. Possibility to take the safe conclusions from bench to clinic (human, GMP quality)
