Robyn Ward is a contemporary Irish painter currently based between London and Los Angeles. A self-taught artist, he began his career as a teenager on the streets of Belfast in Northern Ireland, creating large-scale graffiti work on bridges and derelict buildings.
He now works in mixed media on canvas, combining acrylics, inks, watercolours, oils and spray paint. In his new series “Plastic Nation” he paints exotic/ endangered animals in oil on an abstract background. He constantly constructs and deconstructs the pieces to create a world which is a mix of abstract and realism.
Each animal was chosen to highlight the use of plastic by humans and how much the human race are destroying our natural habitat and the environment, in particular the oceans. Hinting that if we keep going on our current trajectory the only animals we will have left are these ghostly, vivid, deconstructed finely painted memories of the past hanging on walls.
Ward paints each one of his series in different locations around the world, to continuously challenge himself and gain new inspiration. He is currently painting out of México City. This city was specifically chosen for this series, as Ward does not want to be an “ivory tower” painter so to speak. He wanted to paint about the use of plastic and the environment whilst seeing the problems from a developing countries perspective in comparison to the west.
Drawing diverse inspiration from Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock, pop artists like Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, street artist Banksy and the surreal imagination of Hieronymus Bosch, Ward’s multi-layered and multifaceted paintings capture the lurid kaleidoscope of Western society in the 21st century.
In 2018 he did 7 solo shows across the world focusing on racism and 10 group shows including being featured in the Art Attack Exhibition at the Royal Monceau Gallery in Paris with artists such as Banksy, Jeff Koons, Space Invader and Mr. Brainwash among other greats.
In 2019 and 2020 his series “Plastic Nation” will be shown across México City, Belfast, London, Hamburg, Tokyo, Oslo, Stockholm, Ibiza, Madrid, Buenos Aires, NY, LA, São Paulo and Montreal.
