The 60s. It was the height of theBeatles’ popularity. Long sideburnswere in. Four function calculators re-

placed slide rules. The personal com-puter was a gleam in someone’s eye as he

trudged to the computer lab with boxes ofkeypunched cards.

The defense and space industries required increasinglysmaller components – transistors, circuits, semiconductors,solid-state components. All were being invented, refinedand developed as war raged in Southeast Asia. The needfor clean rooms and static control in manufacturing processesevolved, too. The first Federal Standard 209 on air particulatecleanliness classes in clean rooms and clean zones wasissued. The equipment foruse in these environmentswas primitive. All metalchairs developed for thefledgling clean room in-dustry had good cleanroom characteristics – lowdust, low particle counts,no oil or grease – andmeager comfort. ESDseating with a clean roomoption or clean roomseating with an ESD optionwas yet to be dreamed of.Static control was only anissue in operating roomswhere carbon impregnat-ed vinyl upholstery wasbeing used on the chairsanesthesiologists sat on.

The 70s. You and your friends wore bell bottom pants, long hair, gold chains and even ’fros. Disco was the rage. The environment became a political issue. Microprocessorsemerged as the core of new technology. There werestill ice cold computer rooms, disk drives the size ofsmall dishwashers and data archived to huge reel-to-reel tapes. Workers spent hours hunched overdata. Biomechanics – the study of the humanbody as a machine – was identified with theworkplace. Toward the end of the decade, the power of a mainframe computer wastranslated to personal computers. Chairmanufacturers started offering coversfor those 1960s metal chairs to in-crease comfort. Made of vinyl

upholstery and secured with a plastic sealant on the seams, the covers pulled over the metal. They were low particleshedding. There was also a plywood chair with an epoxycoating.

By the mid-70s, manufacturers began studying upholsterypossibilities more carefully. A monofilament nylon thatdidn’t deteriorate and ball up with use was offered. Carbonwas introduced to fibers, leading to the availability of wovenfabrics for use in ESD applications. Chrome plating wasadded to chairs to give them a smooth, dust-free finish, freeof sharp corners that could tear a clean room gown.

In the mid-to-late 70s, companies began to look for betterways to keep particles inside the chair. The goal was toencapsulate particles so they couldn’t get into the room

from the chair. Chairs had to be comfortable for userswithout it feeling like they were sitting on a bubble. A Class100 chair was developed by wrapping vinyl over the seatboard, putting filter paper on the bottom, stapling the vinyland sealing it with adhesive. This provided greater comfortfor the seated worker.

The 80s. You dressed for success. The Me Generationruled. Yuppies emerged. Personal computers came into

their own. Everyone wanted newer, faster, smallerchips, and newer, faster, smaller computers.

More workers were hunched over in theirchairs in clean rooms and in electronic

assembly plants. There were de-mands for cleaner environments

and electrostatic discharge

control. It was estimated that damage bystatic electricity cost businesses more than$5 billion in replacement and repairs. TheBureau of Labor Statistics recorded 26,700cases of cumulative trauma disorders in1983 and watched the numbers grow over1,000 percent during the course of thedecade. Companies initiated ergonomicsprograms.

Leading engineers patented an air filtration process for Class100 seating. The initial capability of the filtration system totrap particulate matter while permitting the seat to conformto body shape was 0.3 microns. Recently, BioFit improvedit to 0.1 microns. Even today, the vinyl seat features a 31/2

diameter filter on the underside that filters the air inthe seat.

The same engineers who developed air filtration for Class100 seating also invented and patented an air exchangesystem for a Class 10 chair. The air exchange systemis outside of the seat, replacing in-seat filtration. This system is encased by a heavy polyethylenepan ensuring that the air never leaves the

chair and doesn’t have to be filtered. This chair has been widely accepted

throughout the world. Anothertype of Class 10 chair was alsodeveloped. It is upholstered witha breathable nylon fabric. The

filter media laminated to the fabric is very efficientand achieves the Class 10 rating.

Toward the end of the decade, an independenttesting laboratory near Ann Arbor, MI, piloted acompression test for clean room chairs that wasbased on Federal Standard 209. It is a definitivetest for the clean room industry that measureshow much a chair in a clean room contributesparticulates to the room.

The clean room industry needed static control protection –and combination chairs were born.

Breathable Class 10 Seating (N10)

BioFit is one of the few chair manufacturers to offer aClass 10 chair in a breathable fabric. Called the N10 chair,it provides nonstick comfort because it is completelycovered in a high-tech nylon called NYTEK®. NYTEK®

nylon is laid down in a three-directional axis similar tothe natural structure found in leather. It is comfortableto sit on and has superior durability.

Beyond the comfort of leather and the durability of nylon,NYTEK® also cleans easily with soap and water, is non-outgassing and nonshedding. NYTEK® nylon is backedwith filter media that achieve Class 10 performance. Airthat escapes to the surroundings is filtered through themedia.

To assure clean room compatibility at the Class 10 level,we assemble, wipe down and package Class 10 chairs inour clean room, single bagging them in a certified cleanroom bag. The components are carefully labeled andshipped to the customer with directions for final assembly. The customer does final assembly in a clean staging area.No wipe down is needed.

Class 100 Seating (VUV)

BioFit Class 100 seating is constructed muchlike the Class 10 chairs. However, in Class100 seating, BioFit uses a filtration systemwithin the seat. The system traps particu-lates while allowing the seat to conform tobody shape. The filter allows unrestrictedair flow with a filter permeability of 230CFM/Ft.2 The polypropylene filter mediatrap particles 0.1 microns and larger.

Class 1 Seating (C1)

Most of our Class 1 stylesof seating are constructedlike our Class 10 model. They feature our exclusiveair exchange system in theseat that allows no air toescape into the clean roomsurroundings. Assembly, wipe down and packagingof these chairs and stoolsin our clean room yields aClass 1 chair. The compo-nents are double bagged incertified clean room bags, carefully labeled andshipped to the customerwith directions for final as-sembly. The customer doesfinal assembly in a cleansetting. No wipe down isneeded.

Performance options enhance the effec-tiveness of clean room seating. In addi-tion to the choice of cleanliness factor(C1-1000) consider these options:

*If you choose armrestsfor your chair, uphol-stered armrests (UA)are appropriate to assurecleanliness in a clean room.

*A dual-wheel polyurethane caster (CRC)made of low particle shedding materialis appropriate for clean room use.

Ergonomic options should be consideredto enhance employee performance. Min-imal ergonomic features of lumbar sup-

port and a pneumatic seat-height adjustment mecha-nism are standard on BioFitchairs. Other options aredetailed with each chair line

description. Here are someoptions it may be important to

consider:

*Various types of ergonomic backrests, seats, and seat controls can enhanceemployee performance by providingproper support and comfort.

*An adjustable 20" diameter footring(ATF) helps workers of different heightsmaintain a torso-to-thigh angle of be-tween 90 and 105 degrees. Many ergon-omists say that an angle less than 90degrees can cause fatigue, poor postureand decreased circulation.

Casters/glides Recommendations

Recommended caster choices for cleanroom chairs include theCRC or the STR caster. The CRC is a dual wheelcaster made of polyure-thane, a low-shedding ma-

terial. The STR caster isa conductive non-marring caster witha polyurethane

wheel. It is appropriatefor clean room chairs thatalso must function asstatic control chairs. These casters have a

hood over thewheel to contain parti-

cles within the roomexhaust area.

Class 1000 Seating (1000)

Class 1000 clean room seating is availablefor less stringent applications. Featuringplugged tubular chrome-plated or cast alu-minum bases and chrome-plated metal parts, these chairs are built on the same frame asall other BioFit clean room chairs. There isno seat filter or air exchange system. Thevinyl underwrap under the seat matches thevinyl upholstery and covers the baseboardof the seat. The seat and backrest are notsealed, though the same filter material usedin Class 100 BioFit chairs covers the exhaustports in the seat and serves as a rough filter.

Class 1Max Seating (ASC-C1)

This advanced Class 1 BioFit chairis prepared for assembly like ourother Class 1 chairs. In addition,it has an ergonomic seat andbackrest tilt. The seat control iscovered with a hard plastic panand sealed with flexible neoprenerubber and double-sided highcontact, nonoutgassing tape, covering all areas where particlescould be generated.

Class 10 Seating (C10)

Class 10 seating features our exclusive air exchange systemin the seat. An integral part of this system is an air reservoir, which is a bag encased in a protective pan attached to theseat. When the worker sits, the air in the seat cushion dis-charges into the reservoir, not the surroundings. To assureclean room compatibility at the Class 10 level, we assemble, wipe down and package Class 10 chairs in our clean room, single bagging them in a certified clean room bag. Thecomponents are carefully labeled and shipped to the customerwith directions for final assembly. The customer does finalassembly in a clean staging area. No wipe down is needed.

Budget Clean Room Seating

Hard surfaced chairs and utility stools areuseful in clean room environments. They areavailable in Class 10 (CR10). Customers mayalso specify most of them in Class 1 (CR1),which entails assembly, wipe down and doublebagging in our clean room. These stools canthen be used in all clean room environments. The BioFit line of budget chairs and utilitystools features the Soft Touch pneumatic seat-height adjustment mechanism, five-leggedbases of chrome-plated tubular steel or castaluminum, and chrome-plated finishes. Legsof budget seating are sealed to keep randomparticles securely inside. Fixed-height stoolsare also available for the clean room.

BioFit offers Class 1, Class 1Max, Class10, Class 100 and Class 1000 chairs andstools for clean room use in industriessuch as semiconductor, aerospace, bio-science, pharmaceutical, medical equip-ment, computers, electronics, food pro-cessing and munitions. Clean rooms arecontrolled environments that meet FederalStandard 209E. Though the standarddoes not apply to equipment and suppliesused in the clean room, BioFit has alwaysmaintained that seatingused in the clean roommust meet or exceedparticulate cleanlinessgoals of Federal Standard209.

TestingBioFit seating is testedfollowing a test methoddeveloped in 1987 by InterBasic Resources, Inc., anindependent testing labo-ratory, located near AnnArbor, MI. The test isdesigned to evaluate par-ticulate cleanliness of clean room chairsby means of particle analysis during seatand backrest compression. The testingisolates and counts the particles generatedby a clean room chair and emitted fromits seat and backrest.

Chairs are first cleaned to remove loosesurface debris and then enclosed in ultraclean plastic bags. Clean air is flowedthrough the bags. Particles are monitoredwhile the seat is compressed by a personsitting on it and simultaneously leaningagainst the backrest. During a 30-minuteperiod, the individual rises and sits on thetested chair six different times. Air passingthrough the bag takes the particles into asophisticated particle counter. Particulatecount samples are drawn from under thetest chair seat.

The testing of BioFit clean roomchairs verifies the chairs' suit-ability for the various types ofclean rooms.

Combination Seating

Some engineers prefer clean room seat-ing with an ESD option. Some engineerswant ESD seating with a clean roomoption. Seating by either name is whatBioFit calls combination seating. BioFitoffers the best of its seating lines incombination seating. Examine theclean room and static control seatinginformation, then consult individual chair

model informationbefore makingyour decision.

Conductive/StaticDissipative CleanRoom Upholstery

BioFit pioneersthe availability ofconductive/staticdissipative (1.5 x105/2.2 x 106 Ohmsper square surfaceat 500V) vinyl

upholstery material for any of its cleanroom chairs. It has lower surfaceresistivity than other fabrics availablefor use in clean rooms. There is nocarbon in the vinyl. Previously, theonly upholstery available for com-bination seating was a layered, staticdissipative, expanded heavy-gauge vinyl. Now you can also specify “conductivegray” to achieve conductive as well asclean room performance.

Clean Room Packaging

BioFit offers certified Class 1 and Class 10 clean room seating. Webring already upholstered ergonomic seats and other chair componentsinto our Class 1000 clean room for final packaging. We wipe themdown, neutralize the static charge of any particles and blow them offwith ionized air. We then do final assembly, put the components intocertified clean room bags and seal them in. Testing has verified theviability of this procedure.

When the unit is packaged there is special labeling that warns thecustomer or receiving dock employees that the package is meant forclean room use and is not to be opened in a dirty area. The customerinsures final cleanliness by following our instructions for opening thebags in a clean environment and assembling the components into thefinal chair or stool.

BioFit Class 100 Chairs Tested for Particle Data

*Footrings can relieve pressure from behindthe knee and improve circulation to the lowerlegs and feet. An adjustable 20" diameterfootring (ATF) helps workers of differentheights maintain a torso-to-thigh angle of

between 90 and 105degrees. Manyergonomists say that anangle less than 90 degrees

can cause fatigue, poor posture anddecreased circulation.

Casters/glides Recommendations

Nickel-plated glides are standard on mostmodels of static control seating. Alsoavailable are the LKRO, LKRU, R, and STRcasters. The LKRO caster is adual-wheel soft caster that lockswhen the seat is occupied. TheLKRU caster is a dual-wheel softcaster that resists movement when the seatis not occupied. When specified for a staticcontrol environment, the R caster is a carbon-impregnated, single wheel, 2" ball bearingcaster. The STR caster is a conductive non-marring caster with a polyurethane wheel. This caster is appropriate for clean roomchairs that also must function as staticcontrol chairs.

Upholstery FabricsBioFit offers a variety of ESD fabrics that arequalified and tested as dissipating static intwo seconds or less. Fabrics such as woolor nylon are woven with carbon-impregnatedyarn or woven stainless steel strands. Vinylupholsteries either have a carbon layerbeneath the surface of the vinyl or are carbonloaded at the surface.

Combination SeatingSome engineers prefer ESD seating with aclean room option. Some engineers wantclean room seating with an ESD option.Seating by either name is what BioFit callscombination seating. BioFit offers the bestof its seating lines in combination seating.

Construction Elements, Features andTechnical DataFor detailed features, construction andtechnical data, study both the static control(these pages) and clean room sections (pages6-11) of this catalog.

Casters/glides RecommendationsBioFit offers the STR caster as an option forcombination seating. It is a conductive non-marring caster with a polyurethane wheel.

BioFit static control chairs and stools canbe either conductive or dissipative, dependingon the upholstery chosen. There is a widevariety to choose from in static controlproducts and seating including ergonomicchairs, office chairs, task chairs, laboratorychairs, stools, sit/stand stools, footrests, and workbenches.

To assure continuity in its chairs, BioFit goesbeyond the basics. Virtually every part of aBioFit static control chair is grounded to thebase. Additionally, every chair has a dragchain and conductive glides or casters. Thereason? Dirt is an insulator and can disruptcontinuity. BioFit has extra paths to groundin case of dirt build-up on any single path.

A spring-loaded contact ballbearing assembly in thepneumatic seat-heightadjustment mechanism is

unique to BioFit. This ball bearing ridesagainst the inner cylinder of the pneumaticmechanism thereby assuring continuity fromthe top of the backrest and seat through thepneumatic cylinder to the base.

Options for Static Control SeatingBioFit sales representatives and dealers areavailable to help determine the type of seatingand the various options needed in a specificfacility.

Performance options enhance theeffectiveness of static control seating. Hereare some options it may be important toconsider:

*An armrest (UA) upholstered withdissipative or conductive material will assurecontinuity in static control settings. Thechair arms are grounded to the bottom of

the chair through the armbracket. This is animportant consideration

if a worker leaves his/herworkstation and the charged chairaccidentally turns so that the arms andbackrest are near the work surface. Staticcan easily disrupt work on the work surface.

*A Mega Ohm (MO) resistor isavailable as an addition toconductive or dissipative chairs.

Ergonomic options should be considered toenhance employee performance. Minimalergonomic features of lumbar support anda pneumatic seat-height adjustmentmechanism are standard on BioFit chairs.Other options are detailed with each chairline description. Here are some options itmay be important to consider:

*An adjustable upholstered armrest (ARU)is available as an ergonomic option with theaddition of an ergonomicseat control to a chair.

Calculating the Correct Seat Height Ordering a Chair from BioFit

Ergonomic programs provide known eco-nomic advantages for business and industry – increased employee productivity, fewerand less traumatic injuries, fewer lost work-days, improved workers’compensation costs, improved medical insur-ance costs, risk controlrather than risk financing. These translate into acompetitive edge.

A look at published case studies in leadingbusiness magazines and on the Internet tellsus this good news.

Manufacturing operations first understoodthe benefits of durable, ergonomic seating.BioFit was there to meet industry needs withpadded, adjustable chairs. Now most cate-gories of industry see the benefits and aretaking a serious look at strong ergonomicprograms.

Ergonomics and ToolsInnovative ergonomic seating is a tool that

provides a transparentinterface between anindividual performingseated work and the workarea. An ergonomic chairbecomes a natural ex-tension of the body and

a tool for more efficient production.

The body, even while seated in what appearsa restful pose, is constantly interacting withthe environment. An ergonomicchair, by reducing the un-necessary work the bodymust do, allows the indi-vidual to channel thebody’s capacity for workmore effectively. The re-duction in fatigue created bythe interaction with the workenvironment readily translates into increasedcapacity for productive work. The chairspresented in this catalog are more than justsurfaces to sit on. They are engineeredproductivity tools.

Human Energy: An Unrecoverable ResourceCompetition has created an ever-expandingneed for enhanced workplace productivity.

Technology has providedthe means for accom-plishing this. Energy de-pletion and fatigue createdby work spaces and toolsdesigned without attentionto human factors translateinto more than material

losses. Wasted human effort is an unrecov-erable resource. Attention to workplace

ergonomics is a key lossprevention strategy andcan provide competitiveadvantage.

People have differences and limitations cre-ated by height, strength andother factors. Their work isdone on surfaces of dif-fering heights. Tools thatdo not adapt to a varietyof workers performingfunctions at a variety ofheights, do not provide anoptimal interface for a diverseworkforce. You will find that the chairs fea-tured in this catalog adjust with the touch ofa control.

Reducing the Potential for InjuryErgonomic seating has a dual goal – tooptimize the performance of the seatedworker and to reduce the potential for injury. When the interface be-tween the equipment, theperson and the environ-ment are in harmony, thepotential for workplaceinjury is reduced, oftenminimized.

Industrial injury prevention strategies includeways of reducing exposure to toxic agents. In seated work, the toxic exposure is cumu-lative. A balanced work posture means thetorso and hips are supported so that minimalforce is exerted in holding the torso stable.Sitting properly on an ergonomic chair can

substantiallyreduce theforces actingon the mus-culoskeletalsystem. Thisreduces thetoxic effects ofseated work.

Is it time toconsider howan investmentin ergonomic

seating can improve more than just the com-fort and health of your employees?

You have had the opportunity to examine the technical data. The sections of the catalog on the BioFit clean room, staticcontrol and combination seating offer you insight on howour chairs work. You can read the specifications of the manychair and stool series. Before you order, let us help youfactor in the latest in ergonomic thinking.

So how do you determine the correct seat-height for your application? The most important factor is the relation of the seat height to the worklevel. Work level is not necessarily just the height of the desk or otherwork surface; it incorporates the entire distance from the floor to wherethe hands are doing an assigned task. For example, the work level fora lab technician may be the level where the hands are working at themicroscope, not the height of the bench the instrument is resting on.

A basic formula to determine the correct seat height is the real work level(measuring floor to the height of the task) minus 12 inches. The resultingmeasurement is the correct seat height and should be the mid-point ofthe seat-height adjustment range of the chair you select.

For example:

38" (work level from floor to task height) - 12"

26" (mid-point of seat-height adjustment range)

Several BioFit chair models accommodate the 26"mean seat height. One of the models you could selectis the 4P62 model. It has a seat-height adjustmentrange of 241/4" - 291/2".

Most BioFit chairs have a seat-height adjustment range of five to sixinches. Having an adjustable variation upward and downward helpsassure that the chair fits the size and body type of the worker. The chairalso will be flexible enough to fit workers on different shifts or differenttasks performed at a slightly changed work level by the same worker.

This formula works for the majority of workers. BioFit ergonomic seatingwill properly fit 90 percent of workers without modifications. For theother 10 percent, adjustments can be made easily because of our modularconstruction. The seat height range can be changed on the job site bysimply adding or removing adapter tubes between the pneumatic cylinderand the base. Even if a chair base must be changed, it can easily be doneon-site as well. Other options such as an adjustable footring, tilting seatand/or backrest assemblies, or a shallow ergonomic seat can be addedto make a chair fit properly. One of BioFit’s capable sales or customerservice representatives can work with you to determine the right chairfor you.

The time has come to order your new BioFit chairs.BioFit strives to make ordering as easy as possible.

Articulating Seat Control (ASC) allows the back and seat to tilt eitherindependently or together and lock in the desired position. Thisprovides a constant amount of spinal support for the user.

Floating Back Control (FBC) is offered for workplaces where adjust-able seat tilt is not necessary. This control allows the user to pulla lever that automatically adjusts the back to the position mostcomfortable for the user. When the lever is released, the backrestcan tilt forward or backward with the user’s movement. The amountof tension in the backrest also can be varied to allow more or lessbackward mobility.

Synchronized Seat Control (SYN) allows numerous positions whichmay or may not be locked by the seated individual. Users canmove the seat and back in a two-to-one ratio, tilt forward andbackward, or rock with feet remaining on the floor. These adjust-ments are especially useful in facilities in which different shifts ofworkers use the same chair.
