Pigment Dispersion Evaluation and Findings

1. Summary

The objective of this report is to provide data on BioEstolide’s ability to suspend and disperse common pigments used in personal care compared to vegetable oils. BioEstolides 30, 250, and 1300 along with castor and sunflower oil were blended with Zinc Oxide (micronized), Titanium Dioxide (micronized), Iron Oxide (Red), Blue Ultramarine, and Pink Ultramarine at 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt%.

4. General Procedure

1. Weigh out 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 wt% mixtures of pigment with oil. 2. Mix samples with a stir bar for 10 minutes. 3. Pour samples into a 40 mL tube. 4. Let samples rest for 3 days. 5. Take photo documentation.

Conclusion BioEstolide’s ability to form stable suspensions with common personal care pigments increases with viscosity. BioEstolide 1300 suspends pigments the most effectively and forms stable suspensions with all pigments tested at lower treat rates. BioEstolide 250 successfully suspends titanium dioxide (micronized), iron oxide (red), and pink ultramarine; however, BioEstolide 250 is not suitable to suspend zinc oxide (micronized) or blue ultramarine. Due to a low viscosity, BioEstolide 30 does not perform well as a suspending agent across all pigments tested in this study. Additionally, when compared to vegetable oils, castor and sunflower oil perform similarly to BioEstolide 250 and BioEstolide 30, respectively. BioEstolide 1300 greatly outperforms the vegetable oils tested in this study.
