town Phoenix has partnered with local farmers, bakers and chefs, includ-ing James Beard Award-winner, Charleen Badman of FnB, to launch aninnovative weekly curbside produce and food pickup service that helpspeople Valley-wide to cook like a chef, while directly supporting localfarmers and restaurant workers in need. The Churchill’s new CommunitySupported Agriculture (CSA) program will offer three different sizes ofpre-packed boxes ($20, $30 or $40) filled with the freshest foods from theValley’s own Sun Produce Co-op, Noble Breads, Hickman’s Eggs andNortherly Oats (plus optional to-go beer, wine and cocktails from TheChurchill’s on-site The Brill Line).

Customers arealso encouraged toBuy One, Give One,

meaning they can choose to donate any sized produce box to support St.Mary’s Food Bank. A proud fifth-generation Arizonan with deep farmingroots, Duncan would also like to acknowledge the many people whohelped bring this program together, including Cindy Gentry at SunProduce, and consultants Sara Anderson and Patty Emmert, and PinnaclePrevention, an Arizona-based nonprofit organization dedicated to grow-ing healthy families and communities.

From the Publisher…From the Publisher…May is finally here! Good job to all of you

for keeping your social distancing throughthese tough times. As we are hopefully near-ing the end of the government mandated clo-sures, let’s take the last few weeks with ourfamilies and loved ones to relax and spendsome quality time together.

Although the toughest part is most likelybehind us, it will take a while for everythingto get back to normal. Or, shall I say “the newnormal!” I know it has been a tough last

month, but I have to say I really believe that a new feeling of appreci-ation and kindness towards others will emerge when all the dust settlesand we get back to work.

My family has been staying home and taking advantage of the manycurbside pickup and delivery specials offered by the local restaurantsaround the Biltmore area. Take advantage of their generosity andadaptability and show them how much you appreciate them and helpsupport the restaurants through these tough times!

I would like to personally ask you to support the Real Estate agents, restaurants and businesses that advertise with Biltmore Lifestyles.Without their continued support, it would not be possible to bring younews and happenings in and around the Biltmore Area. Thank you allfor your support; God bless you!

Until next month, Susan

Local Businesses Form Innovative “Goods for Good” Partnership With the potential looming for at least another month of a drive-

through economy, several prominent local businesses have combined onan ambitious effort to turn the tide on the economic downturn caused bythe COVID-19 crisis.

Local furniture maker Urban Plough has teamed up with Phoenixdesign firm BrandLoyal and local bakery Noble Bread to create “Goodsfor Good,” a program with several moving parts designed to counter thenegative impacts of COVID-19 and create jobs for those who have lostemployment in the past few weeks.

At the core of the effort, Urban Plough is working to ramp up produc-tion of intubation boxes that protect healthcare workers as they treat crit-ical patients with COVID-19. In just three days, they have been asked tomake over 100 units and send them all over the country.

The intubation boxes were designed by Phoenix ER doctor BenjaminReese, based on an initial design by Dr. Hsien Yung Lai in Taiwan. UrbanPlough Furniture created digital files for the boxes to be produced. The fileshave been made free for download so others can produce them, or a dona-tion can be made and the company will produce them. There is also aGoFundMe campaign (intubationbox.com) running for donations as well.

Urban Plough has also developed innovative and affordable new desksfor individuals who are confined to a home office environment indefinite-ly. The new desks are smaller, more affordable and quickly manufac-tured, and can be dropped off or picked up with white-glove treatment to

maximize safety.BrandLoyal is providing design

services for the group on a pro-bono basis and Noble Bread is uti-lizing its existing distribution net-work to get the products out intothe community.

Each of the desks the group isselling provides a manufacturingemployee with one week of payand benefits, so in addition to dri-

ving revenue, the sales are also supporting workers at a time when theyneed it most. The volume of sales will allow the initiative to employ peo-ple from the hospitality industry who have recently lost their jobs.

All of the products are made locally, with 90% of the supplies comingfrom local distributors. This revenue is critical to not only employ peoplebut to allow the group to innovate solutions like they have executed withthis critically needed intubation box.

“Being able to sell our products ensures we are available to con-tinue the philanthropic ideation and creation for those directlyengaged with the crisis while continuing to be productive for thegreater community,” said Matthew Moore, Owner of Urban Plough.“It’s meant to be a hub for the direct sale of goods by local business-es. We have secured partnerships with developers to be drive-thrudistribution hubs that can aggregate the goods that are sold. At thispoint, the hub is just our desk and intubation screen but as we createmore goods, we are also partnering with other producers that aremaking products for good.”

All goods can be purchased through the new e-commerce website nowlive at goodsforgood.com. v

“Set Jet, with its fanatically clean private terminal, mem-ber’s lounge and spacious 13 to 15 seat VIP-configured air-craft was already a much better solution than flying commer-cial or with other high capacity semi-private operators,” saidSet Jet CEO Tom Smith. “Now, with Set Jet’s employee andpre-flight Covid-19 Member Testing Program, there is not asafer way to fly anywhere in the world during these challeng-ing times.”

Set Jet launched flights late last year and has maintaineda 100% dispatch rate to date, without having cancelled a sin-gle flight, an impressive record particularly since the virusthat causes COVID-19 took the world by storm. To ensurecontinued service while minimizing risk of exposure to thevirus, effective immediately, each of Set Jet’s members willbe tested for the COVID-19 antibody just prior to flying andwill receive confidential test results in approximately 10 to15 minutes.

Previously, Set Jet announced that it was enhancing its cleaning and sterilizing procedures before, during and after each flight, to include the useof hospital-grade disinfectant throughout the aircraft, its private terminal and member lounge.

“It’s best not to travel right now, but for those who absolutely need to get to any of the destinations we serve, we have taken significant steps tominimize our members’ risk of exposure.” added Smith. “We are proud to be the first to offer the tests and provide peace of mind to our members. We have received overwhelming appreciation and praise for taking the initiative and doing whatever we can to protect our members and their lovedones from the Coronavirus while traveling.”

Set Jet has partnered with Arizona based, The CORE Institute, one of the world’s premier patient care providers, to administer onsite, rapid COVID-19 antibody tests. For non-Set Jet members who wish to be tested, Set Jet is working with The CORE Institute to help schedule testing at their clinicalfacilities throughout the Valley in the coming weeks. Interested parties may email [email protected] to get more information regarding testing.

Set Jet utilizes private, non-congested VIP terminals so members can avoid the inconveniences of commercial air travel such as advance notice forbooking flights, premiums for last-minute travel, security delays, check-in requirements and parking expenses. Set Jet uses ultra-VIP configured 13-15seat Challenger 850 aircraft exclusively, providing an unparalleled, true private jet, luxury experience. Set Jet has also partnered with five-star restaurants, resorts, luxury brands and other service providers such as rental car companies and car manufacturers that provide ancillary benefits to its members.

The Effortless OfficeBy Tina Mellino, Allied ASID Interior & Lifestyle Designer Zia Interiors

Who could have ever predicted our current environ-ment and the adaptations we will be facing in our per-sonal and business lives?

News cycle overdrive, social distancing, protectivemasks, ZOOM and the thrill of scoring a package oftoilet tissue! Life as we know it will change, and theday to day freedoms we’ve always enjoyed and takenfor granted will see a new norm.

But as we bend and learn to adapt, we can make plans! Small, mediumor super-sized do it like there is a tomorrow! I remain hopeful that by thetime this feature is published our country will be open again, there is atreatment protocol and vaccine progress for Covid-19. One thing for cer-tain is we will have some new work norms. The acronym is affectionatelyknown as WFH Working From Home.

Learning how to work from home may take some getting used to. Forsome this may be a dream come true, and for others it may feel like anightmare! Whatever your new norm will be, here are a few tips to facil-itate WFH.

Designate a specific area in your home for work or computer time. Ifyou don’t have a separate room, find an area with minimum traffic flowor a corner of a room off from the main area.

Block excess noise with noise cancelling head phones or ear buds.Studies have shown soft music and soothing sounds can activate the calm-ing part of your brain, help you concentrate and lower blood pressure!

Set physical boundaries around your designated work space. Ask fam-ily members for non-essential interruptions and limit personal phonecalls-small distractions can add up and take away from productivity.

Stick to regular work hours. Take breaks and take time for lunch. Putaway devices and work projects in order to relax and recharge at the endof the day.

Subscribe and learn the new ZOOM video conferencing. It will keepyou connected with office mates and social circles

Keep your attitude in check. Above all, be creative and don’t let yourconfined circumstances dwarf your happiness or productivity. Takeadvantage of this restrictive time to organize, garden or get caught up onfun hobbies you’ve been putting off.

Your greatest power is your perspective! You may contact Tina for interior and lifestyle design services

Top Three Things to Know toMaximize Your Unemployment

Benefits During COVID-19By: Joshua C. Black, Esq.

Don’t delay, file today! The waiting period for unemployment bene-

fits has been waived in Arizona! Employeeswho have lost a job, or had pay or hoursdecreased, should apply for unemployment ben-efits as soon as possible at www.azui.com.

The Department of Economic Security(“DES”) is recommending that individualsapply even if they are unsure if they quali-fy for benefits due to the federal programsbeing rolled out to provide additional relief

to the country’s unemployed. As the unemployment rate continues to rise, DES is experiencing

a major increase in initial claims filings with weekly claims increas-ing from 2,953 claims a week in the end of February to 88,592 claimsfor the week of March 28, 2020.

This increased number of applicants means that processing timesfor unemployment applications are expected to be longer thanusual. DES is estimating that it may take up to twenty-one days fromfiling to process claims. Because of this long delay, applicants areencouraged to apply as soon as possible to get the process started.

Indicate that your unemployment is related to COVID-19.Provide information in your application that shows you lost your jobbecause of COVID-19.

To qualify for the additional $600 weekly unemployment benefitprovided by the CARES Act, the applicant must indicate that the jobloss is a result of COVID-19. Arizona’s unemployment applicationhas been updated online and now has a “COVID-19” indicator thatcan be selected on the application. Applicants would also be wise tosubmit documentation from work or a physician stating that their jobloss is related to COVID-19. Complete weekly requirements tomaintain entitlement to benefits!

The CARES Act allows for up to 39 weeks of unemployment ben-efits. To ensure benefits continue for the duration of the unemploy-ment the applicant must complete a weekly certification that he orshe is still unemployed. Applicants can submit their certificationonline at www.azui.com. Additionally, the requirement that an appli-cant be “actively seeking work” to receive benefits has been waivedfor those unemployed due to COVID-19.

Additional information can also be found at the Department ofEconomic Security’s website.

I often work with busy profession-als and purpose-driven entrepreneurs who arestruggling with their digestion, immunity andlow energy, and the time it’s taking them to fig-ure out long-term health solutions is not onlytaking away their freedom, it’s impairing theirability to perform at optimum level.

The rewarding part about prioritizing yourhealth is that once it’s secured, you have moretime to focus on the things that matter the most toyou. Helping my clients learn how to boost theirimmune systems during this unexpected timewith healthy foods that they can store for longperiods of time, saves them even more time.

Here are some of my clients’ favorite ways toboost and protect immunity that you can alsobenefit from when you incorporate them intoyour daily routine:

1. Drink Vegetable Juice: Juices are one ofthe most systematic and efficient methodsof boosting immunity, because they deliverimmediately absorbable nutrients to yourcells in the form of enzymes, minerals andvitamins. Juices can be made at home(what I encourage my clients to do).Ideally, it’s best to drink your juice themoment it’s pressed but homemade juicescan typically be stored for up to 3-4 daysand still maintain most of their nutritivecontent, especially if they’re made withsome lemon which acts as a natural preser-vative, and helps the juices from spoilingrapidly. Is freezing juice going to deliverthe most optimum nutrition profile? Nobut this is better than not drinking juices atall. For those who cannot or choose not tomake juices a home, the other option is toorder cold-pressed juices from a localhealth food store or online through a deliv-ery service. Homemade and store-boughtjuices can be kept frozen and defrostedwhen needed. Avoid the pasteurized

options. As an alternateoption for making sureyour body gets a goodhealthy dose of chloro-phyll, (the good greensthat help to boost hemo-globin in your bloodwhich also boosts ener-gy) you can buy spiruli-na or Sun Chlorellatablets (or capsules) ifjuices are not available.

2. Eat More Plants/WholeFoods/Probiotic-RichFoods:

The science on gut healthand the microbiome showsthat 90% of disease isreversible or avoidablethrough a plant-based diet. It’s also known that over 70%of Americans suffer from some form of digestivedisease. By improving gut health with a moreplant-centric diet, you will see an increase inyour body’s ability to ward off threats and envi-ronmental pathogens because your immune sys-tem is just one cell layer away from your gut andthey’re not mutually exclusive.

• When it comes to eating more produce, fresh is best but frozen fruits and vegeta-bles will do. (Fruits for smoothies.Frozen vegetables for soups. I wouldn’trecommend frozen veggies for juices.)Just like making fresh-pressed juices athome and freezing them, frozen vegeta-bles are better than none at all.

• Sauerkraut and Kimchee: These naturallyfermented foods are rich in probiotics - thevital food sources that feed the microbio-me and support and boost immune systemfunction. Bonus: They have a shelf life forover a month and taste super delicious insalads.

• Seaweed: Seaweed is packed with traceminerals. You can add this seaweed toyour favorite veggie dish or eat it with rootvegetables or whole grain entrées. Optionsinclude: Nori, hijiki, laver nori, kelp whichwill stay for several months and don’trequire refrigeration. Kelp noodles storefor months in the refrigerator and are agreat way to avoid the heavy starchy carbo-hydrates of wheat-based pastas thatobstruct and undermine the immune sys-tem with unwanted congestion.

3. Cellular Rejuvenation: Using CPTG(medical grade) essential oils, (particularlythe herb and spice oils) boosts and protectsthe body’s natural immune defenses.Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus andRosemary are some of the oils I encouragemy clients to use, because their chemicalprofile lends itself to protective character-istics for natural immune boosting duringthese unexpected times. I believe thatevery house should have the purest, mosttested and the most trusted essential oils onhand, When you’re ready to get some for

your own home or office, I’d be happy tomake sure you can get them at the bestprice delivered to your door without over-spending.

One of the benefits of improving yourimmune system and protecting it, especially ifyou travel for work and or pleasure on the regu-lar, is going from one winter to the next and notgetting sick. I believe you can heal your bodyand maintain a strong immune system from theinside out by focusing on the proper nourish-ment and two most overlooked yet powerfulaspects of long-term health: proper gut healthand detoxification. I’m grateful that I get to saymy passion is my profession and that it’s beendecades since I’ve been sick.

Teaching individuals how to nourish, detoxifyand rejuvenate so they can feel like they’re agingin reverse is what I do. Helping them to live alife of freedom so they can make the biggest dif-ference in the lives of others is who I am.

When you’re ready to learn how to improveand protect your immunity and take it to the nextlevel, it would be my true honor to guide youalong your journey. For more information, visitwww.Joycerockwood.com. v

Coronavirus Impact on Housing MarketBy Debbie Frazelle,

Coldwell Banker Realty

Arizona real estate experts say coronavirus willhave some impact on housing; however, heading intothe crisis the Phoenix metropolitan area was/is wellpositioned to weather the storm. People love livingin the Sunbelt and Arizona. Our population will con-

tinue to grow once this is over. Companies will continue to movehere. As working-from-home becomes the even-newer normal, wecould actually see a future boom in relocation here as more employeesare untethered from their offices and higher real estate prices outsideof Arizona. For now, we are learning new ways to conduct business.Almost everything from offer-to-closing can be done electronically. We started out the year looking like this was going to be a fantasticyear!

By The Numbers: Housing from Mark Stapp of The Center for RealEstate Theory and Practice at Arizona State University

• From 2018 to March 1st, 2020, within the bounds of the City ofPhoenix, the housing marketplace saw a $46 million gain in overallsales volume - going from $392 million to $428 million - as price persquare foot sits at $182, which is up from $163 two years prior. Theaverage price sold of a single-family home in Phoenix is $351,336,which is up from $303,982 two years prior.

• From 2018 to March 1st, 2020, within the bounds of the Town ofParadise Valley, the housing marketplace saw a $58 million gain inoverall sales volume - going from $53 million to $111 million - asprice per square foot sits at $437, which is up from $362 two yearsprior. The average price sold of a single-family home in the Town ofParadise Valley is $2,390,071, which is up from $1,789,561 two yearsprior.

• From 2018 to March 1st, 2020, within the bounds of the City ofScottsdale, the housing marketplace saw a $122 million gain in over-all sales volume - from $279 million to $401 million - as price persquare foot sits at $291, which is up from $243 two years prior. Here are a few interesting tips for Buyers and Sellers when showingtheir home during Covid-19Sellers-

• Open all doors before all showings and sanitize knobs after showings• Leave cabinet doors and any other space a buyer will want to see

open• Turn on any needed lights, lamps and light switches before showings

starts• Keep windows and doors open to let fresh air flow throughout the

showingBuyers-

• Refrain from touching any surface while viewing the property• Use your own car while driving to a showing. Do not carpool with

others.• Wear booties or shoe covers while inside a property• Always bring your own hand sanitizer in case it is not provided by

the agentJust know, Buyers are still buying, Sellers are still selling and Lenders

are still lending. Historically speaking, The Greater Phoenix Metropolitanarea is the first to recover from downturns and disasters, and we generallyenjoy a robust recovery. We’re all in this together, and the current situa-tion requires cooperation and respect for one another. Our homes havebecome more important than ever.
