Stuff the Turkey, Not Yourself, At Holiday Dinners

By Nilo Sultani MS RD, Nutritionist at Abrazo Arizona

We’ve hit the annual holiday season and we tendto make too many poor health choices when we lookat the holidays and those accompanying feasts.Instead, focus on your normal routine and enjoy theholidays however you’d like.

“Depending on what time your holiday feast is,eat one or two small meals before the big dinner. Many people starve themselves to “save” their calo-ries for their turkey dinner. Unfortunately, it

becomes much harder to control our portions and listen to our inner full-ness levels when we’re starving!” says Clinical Dietitian Nilo Sultanifrom Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital.

Sultani notes that seconds will taste much better the next day, ratherthan forcing yourself to eat when you’re already full.

“A good place to stop eating is when you’re feeling satisfied but stillable to go for a walk comfortably. If you need to unbutton and stretch out,you may have overdone it,” she laughs.

Sultani recommends that if it’s possible, try to have an early holidaydinner. That gives your body time to digest and be active.

“Try to fit in some activity with family and friends – going for a hike, playing football or just a walk around the block are all ways to spend timewith your loved ones. And if you overeat, remember that it’s just one day.No need to starve yourself or detox the next day to compensate.” v

Real Estate UpdateTips for Selling your Home….Part 2

By Debbie Frazelle, Coldwell Banker Residential BrokerageIf you are planning on putting your house on the

market this fall or spring, I am sure you are hoping tosell your home as quickly as possible and get your ask-ing price. Here is Part 2 of helpful hints to make yourselling experience a success!

While it’s true that housing inventory (the number ofhomes on the market) is lower in the fall than in the

spring, it’s also true that buyers who are shopping in the fall are likely tobe serious about buying. Fall buyers may be moving because of a job relo-cation, change in family situation, downsizing or just because they want tobe ready to take advantage of the wonderful spring weather in Arizona!

Try a pedestal sink to maximize space. If you have a small bathroombut a huge cabinet-style sink, consider changing it out for a simplepedestal version. Your bathroom will appear bigger.

But it’s my style! Guess what? It may not be the style of those seekingto buy a house. So even if you have vintage-chic look going on, rein it infor the sake of appealing to a larger group of buyers. You can bring yourpersonal style back in your new home.

Use extra rooms wisely. If you have been using a spare bedroom as adumping ground for odd pieces of furniture and boxes of junk, it’s time toclean up your act. Each room should have a clearly defined purpose, so thinkabout what potential buyers might like to see here. An office? A guest room?Whether you buy inexpensive furnishings, rent them, or borrow some fromfriends, making a real room out of a junk room will pay off in the end!

Stage the outdoors too. Even if your condo has only a teensy postagestamp–size balcony, play it up with a cute café table and chairs, a cheerfultablecloth and even a little tray of dishes or a vase of flowers. When peo-ple look at this, they won’t be thinking “small,” they will be thinking,“What a fun spot to have breakfast!”

It is best to take your pictures before your holiday decorations are dis-played. If you wait to take them until after the holidays, make sure yourpictures are taken before the first frost!

Happy Holidays. See you next year. Debbie Frazelle Coldwell Banker.Opening Doors for Buyers and Sellers since 2003! v

Live in EleganceBy Tina Mellino-Interior and Lifestyle Designer, Allied ASID

Ahh it’s finally fall, and now we really get to open upour living spaces, enjoy our patios and take in the out-door lifestyle of living in the Biltmore! Autumn is crispand fresh, and desert color comes alive all around us.With this change in season, also comes a change in atti-tude and perhaps a much needed reset to your homedécor. The easiest and most effective changes come

from a simple coat of fresh paint on an accent wall, a few new accessoriesin the form of lighting or throw pillows to new seasonal flowers and theircontainers.

Inspired by Sherwin Williams Colormix® 2020 collection, color influ-ences come into play that are minimalistic, serene and create a sanctuaryof peace and quiet in the home. Soft muted neutral color palettes are theultimate in sophisticated beauty and softness. Colors in this palette haveentwined an East meets West aesthetic creating a look that is more aboutease, ‘IKI Gai’ (a reason for being) and effortlessness.

Natural textures and weaves are especially popular this season and areseen on everything from cozy sweaters to nubby area rugs, knitted sofa-throws and especially decorative pillows. Color, pattern and materials aremixed, mashed and threaded together to create fabrics and coverings thatare tactile and refreshingly organic in nature. Designer and CEO of POMPOM at home, Hilde Leiaghat, embraces the philosophy of the ‘well-livedin look’ with her passion for home goods, linens and clothing that evokesa sense of romanticism, peaceful memories and gentleness. Her collectionincludes bed linens, over-sized bed pillows and the new body pillow, a 40plus inch rectangular pillow that is now the king of all throw pillows! Travel Phone Hacks!Prepping your smartphone for your trip is just as important as knowing

what to pack in your suitcase. Andrew Moore-Crispin, Director ofContent at Ting Mobile, a top-rated mobile service that aims to save peo-ple money on their phone bills and be smart about phone use, sharessavvy phone tips below to ensure stress-free travel during the holidays.

Secure data and personal info: Enable your phone’s screen lock fea-ture and use a strong password to protect your information on the go.

Plan ahead: Some airlines are already removing their seatbackscreens, so be sure to download all your favorite movies for your nextflight. Two of the most popular online video services, Netflix andAmazon Prime, both let you download movies to your device.

Take your maps offline: If you end up in an area without cell phonereception, you don’t need to use your cellular network to navigate withGoogle Maps. Download entire regions of maps in advance over a Wi-Fi, and you’ll be able to access turn-by-turn navigation, location searchesand establishment info without using data.

Monitor and limit app usage to avoid huge data charges: Apps likeNetflix, Spotify and Facebook all see upticks through extensiveusage. Control your data in the app’s setting. You can set how much datathe app can use, and you can prevent photos from loading in your feeduntil you’re on Wi-Fi.

Charge your phone faster on Airplane Mode: If you’re low on bat-tery life and in a crunch for time, put your smartphone on Airplane Modeto cut down the time needed to charge your phone.

Use your phone as a GPS tracker (for friends or children travelingwith you): Google Maps has a cool feature that lets you share locationsin real-time, so you can see where your travel companions or kids are. This is an awesome safety tip for parents of slightly older kids who mightwant to do their own exploring.

Be more mindful: Decide before you leave to change your behavior.Put down your phone and unplug every once in a while. Take that walkon the beach without bringing your phone or get some much-needed restwhile you’re flying. Your phone will thank you too.

Executive Chef Dushyant Singh Delivers Elements of Surprise with New MenusUnexpected Ingredients Shine on New Brunch, Lunch and Dinner Menus

Hold the pumpkin spice and swap in unexpected ingredients like bar-rel-aged fish oil and maitake mushrooms to make fall flavors shine thisseason, says the notable Executive Chef Dushyant Singh, who just thisweek rolled out all new menus at Blue Hound Kitchen & Cocktails.

A neighborhood staple in Downtown Phoenix, Blue Hound offersfamiliar, yet refined favorites that share the spotlight with sophisticatedsharable plates, savory sides and award-winning craft cocktails. Creditedwith reinvigorating the restaurant as a New-American concept earlier thisyear, Chef Singh continues to push the boundaries with these new menusby incorporating small elements of surprise in each dish to create an ele-vated dining experience that complements Blue Hound’s welcoming andsocial ambiance.

On the new fall dinner menu at BlueHound, guests can expect to see an array ofdishes that utilize fresh flavors, seasonal ingre-dients and contemporary techniques.Standouts include the Chicken & Dumplings($16) with fried chicken, ricotta gundi, confitcarrot and braised fennel gravy; RoastedGolden Beets ($13) with smoked yogurt, pick-led pear, puffed grain, mustard green andpumpkin seed vinaigrette; Grilled PorkTomahawk ($32) with braised collard greens, chorizo red pepper jam, blackberry barbecueand corn bread gremolata; Roasted Baja Bass($34) with heirloom cannellini bean ragoutand jalapeno tomato puree chimichurri; andthe Lamb Bolognese ($28) with crushed toma-to, golden raisin and ricotta salata pappardelle.

Chef Singh has also refined the shareablesides on the dinner menu with a range ofoptions for $9 including the Spinach Brulee with smoked onion, goatcheese and herb; Roasted Sunchokes with marcona almond, sherry beurre

blanc and lemon; CharredBroccolini with lemon aioli, roast-ed garlic and parmesan; and WildForge Mushrooms with braisedcipollini, five-minute egg andtruffle butter.

Chef Singh has debuted a newlunch menu featuring 10 newdishes that range from light anddelicate salads to heartier entreesincluding the Maitake MushroomPot Roast ($11) with torched tomato, Schreiner’s spicy sausage, freshherbs and grilled Noble bread; Beef & Bleu Salad ($21) with prime flatiron steak, Roth Moody smoked bleu cheese, baby iceberg, bacon, chiveand tomato; Reuben Sandwich ($15) with house pastrami brisket, pick-led red cabbage, swiss and Noble rye and Organic Grain Salad ($12)with quinoa, lentil, fregola, local popped corn, feta, pepita and cidervinaigrette.

“I’m also really excited about the Maitake Mushroom Pot Roast on thelunch menu,” said Chef Singh. “The maitake mushrooms add an earthyand unexpected flavor to an otherwise familiar dish that I think people arereally going to be excited about. Plus, it makes for a great vegetarianoption.”

The weekend warriors won’t be left out with Chef Singh adding ahandful of new dishes to the Hair of the Dog brunch menu, available onSaturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Some of Chef’s lat-est additions include Angostura Bitter Rubbed Pork Ribs ($11) with cher-ry glaze and orange gremolata; BHKC Fish Tacos ($15) with white fish, pineapple slaw, cilantro, chipotle aioli and avocado relish; The Panzanella($15) with heirloom tomato, whipped goat cheese, Noble crouton, redonion, cucumber, sherry vinegar and EVOO and Toffee Bread Pudding($13) with candied bacon, toffee caramel and berry jam.

Stay Light on PitchesBy Tina Tombs, Arizona Biltmore Golf Club

Tour players hit an average of 11 to 12 greens in regulation per round. For

amateurs, that number is considerably lower. Pitching, therefore, is a critical

element to improving your score. The better you pitch, the lower your total. If

your short game isn’t up to snuff, this tip will make you money in no time from

50 yards and in.

The error we are targeting here is “heavy handedness.” By that, I’m refer-

ring to the times when the club suddenly feels too heavy in your hands. This

is caused by the clubhead moving to the inside of the target line while your

hands are still outside or on plane. Make your pitch

backswing, stop when the shaft is parallel to the

ground, then turn your head to look at the clubhead.

What you want to see is that the shaft and clubhead are

still outside your hands (see photo). While the club is

outside, you can set it on a steeper plane, which allows

it to feel lighter sooner, making it easier to control. A

steeper plane also allows you to swing the club more to

the left and better utilize the club’s bounce.

With just one look you can check and correct your

position so it’s perfect every time. If you’re still strug-

gling, make sure your right-hand grip is more on top of

the handle (V pointing to your nose) and that you’re

keeping your hands low and your arms close to your

chest. The rest of your pitch swing is now on autopilot.
