TRANSCRIPT

Movement into the world can be difficult for an individual due to contextual circumstances.

The film Billy Elliot by Daldry addresses difficulty for Billy to move into the world due to contextual circumstances. Billy's upbringing in Herrington is heavily defined by strict social, contextual,l and economic factors, such attests to this mining town. The theme of into the world is mirrored by the theme of individual growth. Billy unmistakably grows as an individual as he is able to make the transition between being a miners son (during the 1984-85 miners strike) expected to follow a traditional path into mining and participating in sports such as boxing -to pursuing a career as a professional ballet dancer. Upon this transition, Billy faces many contextual circumstances, including the miner's strike, working class background as well as the death of his mother.

Billy unmistakably grows as an individual as he is able to make the transition between being a miners son expected to follow a traditional path into mining. Everington's patriarchal, working class context restricts Billy's movement into the world. Their traditional understandings of masculinity act as a barrier to transition. This is symbolised by the boxing gloves, which is passed down through generations all from the working class. Billy finds it difficult to move into the world due to his abhorrent skills in boxing, such is evident with the quote: You're a disgrace to them gloves, your father, and the traditions of this boxing hall!. In addition, the miners feel emasculated by being forced to move into the world by a female Prime Minister, which is further symbolised with men in the supermarket scene, trying to reassert their masculinity by fighting there and showing that their traditional understandings of masculinity causes them to resist their inevitable transition into the world. This is highlighted in the quote We're fucked anyway - Gary, in response to Tony's advice about what will happen if anyone crosses the picket line. This disables both individuals to move on into the world due to the mining strike being a barrier that, ultimately hinders Billy transition into the world.

INTRO SENTENCEThe death of Billy's mother has had significant impact on Billy as this contextual circumstance induced difficulty for Billy to transition. Billy's mother is an essential character in the story, and despite her death, she is still present in the film as there are photographs of her along with her personal possessions.

The death of Billy's mother provided a lack of support for Billy to transition, such is represented in the quote Mum would've let us - Jackie (when Jacky commands Billy to play the piano). Piano pushes him away from reality escape. Add techniqueThe lack of support is one method that hinders Billy's transition due to his mother's death. In addition, Billy's mother was full of creativity, highlighted by her piano creativity is something that the rest of the family lacks. This contextual circumstance provided a narrow pathway for Billy's future as it assured that mining is the only opportunity available in Everington, which must be redeemed. For this reason, movement into the world for Billy is difficult due to this contextual circumstance.

Jacky and Tony are miners on strike; they stand for the working class. The future of miners is not bright due to the political situation, yet being a miner is the only prospect available for Tony and Billy. Jacky and Tony comply with the image of their men role. They do not show affection for Billy openly nor do they explicitly demonstrate any passion concerning the dead mother and wife explicitly. Billy as a young man has his life with possibilities ahead of him. Both Jacky and Tony see Billy as a bearer of their values. They expect Billy to follow the path to fulfil the male role as they did. This is depicted in the kitchen fight scene where Billy is caught in the middle of a philosophical war that he doesn't want to be a part of. When Billy is forced upon the kitchen table to dance, there is a subversion of camera angles as Billy is seen through a low angle show, despite his lack of power, and Tony with a high angle shot. This use of subversion shows the dilemma and confusion occurring throughout the scene. This is supported through the quote by Tony (to Mrs Wilkinson): He's not doin' any more fuckin' ballet, and if you go near him again, I'll smack you, you middle class cow! further hindering Billy's transition into the world due to the contextual circumstance of their working class.

Therefore, it has been established that movement into the world can be difficult for an individual due to contextual circumstances. Billy is the one that has to stand up for his own desires and make his own decisions to demonstrates how he feels about his future. However, these contextual circumstances converges into a single barrier that hinders Billy to transition into the world.
