“OH I DO LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE” Walk along the prom, prom prom on New Brighton coastline and little evidence is apparent of one of the largest stadiums to grace the Football League, not once, but twice for two quite distinct clubs. First of all came New Brighton Tower formed by local businessmen to try and entice holidaymakers from Lancashire, Liverpool and further afield to their entertainment complex on The Wirral Peninsular. The Tower, a giant 620 foot structure, surpassing by quite some height, Blackpool tower, overlooked such attractions as a zoo, funfair, open air swimming pool, tea gardens, and the like. However similar to

today's English holiday resorts, it suffered with poor visitor numbers in the winter months. What to do? Well with Liverpool and Everton achieving massive gates in excess of 40,000 for many games it was decided to set up a soccer club to rival their near neighbours over the Mersey. So in the late 1890's a team was entered into a local Lancashire league, but and then being voted into The Football League. With a massive and luxurious ground capable of holding up to 80,000 spectators it was never really tested with gates numbered in the hundreds, not tens of thousands as anticipated. It was a determined effort by local businessmen to attain first division status, and lingering in the then second (and bottom) division was not an option. So on finishing Champions of the Lancashire League "The Towerites" were elected to the Football League at the second attempt. Despite failing at the initial voting, it was decided by the clubs' that Division 2 would be expanded by two teams and New Brighton Tower were in. A respectable 5th place was achieved in the 1898/9 debut season and was followed by a dip the following season, and the third and final league season brought a very creditable 4th place with the last home game producing a win over Arsenal. Plans were made for the fourth Football League season, with players signed, and then, as suddenly as it had started, it was over. As late as September the club resigned itself from the competition, with Doncaster Rovers taking their place at very short notice on the very eve of the forthcoming season. The upshot was that the club secretary was summoned to explain the clubs demise, and was duly fined £50.00. So that was the end of the New Brighton Tower Football Club. The Tower Ground carried on featuring cycle racing, athletics and even Burmese wrestling in the following years. However that was not the end of football at the enclosure. In the early 1920's a new club was formed, New Brighton A.F.C. and they were to play at a new ground Sandheys Park, in Rake Lane, New Brighton, entering The Football League in 23/4 season. So how did football return to The Tower Ground? For the answer to that you'll have to buy the next issue of the Billinge Football Club programme!

PRESS REPORT 7 SEPTEMBER:

Division One Rylands bounced back from their midweek disappointment against Greenalls to record an emphatic 4-0 away victory at Billinge. Two goals from debutant

Joel Brownhill added to by one each from Ben Slater and the impressive Liam Hayes, ensured Rylands were rewarded for a fine display of attacking football. The game started brightly and it was Billinge who had the first opportunity when a speculative drive from Green was easily held by Moor in the Rylands goal. At the other end a similar effort from Waldron was comfortable for Cameron in the home goal. Despite Rylands enjoying good possession, the best chance fell to Smith for Billinge who should have done better than fire a shot over the crossbar when well placed. The scare provoked a fine attack from Rylands and after a Waldron free kick had been half cleared, new boy Brownhill fired a superb half volley into the net from eighteen yards. Moments later Rylands should have increased their lead when Brown and Slater combined to present Dermody with a great opportunity but his close range volley went wide of the home goal. Dermody also saw a fine headed effort drift inches wide before Slater scored a second goal for Rylands after Hayes had outpaced the home defence and played a fine ball to the unmarked striker who finished easily. The game was effectively settled two minutes before the break when Brownhill fired an excellent shot into the top corner of the net after a corner kick was only half cleared. It had been a dominant display from Rylands who had ruthlessly converted their fine approach play into three excellent goals. The second half saw Rylands content to play counter attacking football as their hosts tried to get back into the match. Liam added a fourth goal with an unstoppable drive from outside the penalty area fifteen minutes from time. Rylands keeper Moor was called into action late on to ensure a clean sheet when Quigley drove a fierce effort at the keeper in the dying minutes of the game. Reserve Division Denton Town finally got their first win of the season as they travelled to Egerton and finished 4-2 winners, while Kayle Power was on the score sheet twice as he helped Linotype CHN to a 3-2 win away at Grappenhall Sports with Jordan Thompson also scoring. Linotype followed this up with a 2-0 win away at Denton Town. Greenalls started their week with 9-0 romp at home against Gamesley. Lee Deakin, Ben McWilliams and Jon Leatherbarrow all scored twice with further goals coming from Glen Percival, Tom Lees and Jacob Lovatt. Poynton shared the spoils with Billinge in a 0-0 draw, while goals from John Kralev and Tom Horsley helped Grappenhal Sports earn a point in a their 2-2 draw at Garswood United. Pilkington made it two wins on the bounce with a 2-1 win away at Egerton, while Styal stormed to a 7-3 victory away at Eagle Sports. Whaley Bridge finished 2-1 winners away at Rylands as they met for the second time in two weeks. Rylands twice gifted possession to the visitors which resulted in goals on both occasions. Tom Wildgoose opened the scoring for Whaley after half an hour but after the break Ewan Rodgers pulled Rylands back level following good work by Jonny Priest. Rylands put in a strong second half performance but the 85th minute saw Whaley slip back into the lead as Tom Scorer hit home. The home side were unlucky not to get a point when Phil Harrison's least minute header was cleared off the line. Kat Davey

Excellent away point for the reserves It has been goals galore at most of Billinge Reserves' games this season but down at Poynton on Saturday it was all-square and no goals. The game started quietly but after 14 minutes Billinge had their first real attack. Good combination work between Derek Evans and Dan Hague set up the lively Rob Ablewhite but his effort went narrowly wide. Three minutes later the action switched to the other flank where

Ant Farrell and Tom Ashall combined well before Ashall's cross just eveaded the hard-working Reece and Ablewhite. On 21 minutes Billinge had to be on their guard as Tom Hull pulled off a great save from Poynton's big centre-forward. It was the only really effort the big lad had as Jay Parkin had a magnificent game against him, betraying his lack of years keeping him in his back pocket for the ninety minutes. The remainder of the half saw Billinge dominate but without creating any real chances on goal. The second half saw Poynton come out of the blocks at Billinge but the ever-impressive Evans and Ashall looked dangerous on the break for the visitors. On the hour mark an Evans corner saw Chris Duffy flick the ball on for Joe Unsworth who rose like a salmon but his header came back off the bar. It was Captain Marvel Unsworth again in the action on 70 minutes; a delicious cross by Farrell found Unsworth in space but again his effort hit the bar. With both teams looking for the win the final ten minutes were frantic. First an Ashall strike was saved well by the home keeper while on 85 minutes the keeper pulled off an even better save from an Ablewhite strike. Meanwhile in the final minute Hague and Hull combined brilliantly to clear off the line to keep the score at 0-0 and prevent a late defeat that would have been hard on this improving young team. After the game manager Squash was made up with all of the 15 lads with a special mention for the unused substitutes. He said: "It was a tough game and really hard to make any changes. "We need a squad if we want to fulfil our potential and win honours and I stressed to the players that appearances will even themselves out in a long season. "It was just one of those games that hung on a knife edge and I felt that the eleven on the pitch had a great chance of getting the win as well as keeping them out at the other end."

Stand out performances came from Geoff Parr, Dan Hague and Tom Hull but the man-of-the match went to Jay Parkin who is turning into a rising star amongst a very talented reserve team squad.

PRESS REPORT 7 SEPTEMBER: Division One Crewe inflicted the first defeat of the season on Garswood United as a single goal from Stevie McNichol saw Crewe finish 1-0 winners at home and moves them up to eighth

spot in the table. Garswood United remain in top spot, one point clear of second place Knutsford having played the same number of games. Linotype CHN moved up to seventh spot as they beat Pilkington 6-1 at home. Dave Owens and Carl Rezai both scored twice with further goals from Vinnie Braine and Philip Yuille ensuring that Linotype left with all three points. Styal and Whaley Bridge finished goal-less as neither side could break through the opposition’s resolute defence, while Gamesley continued their run of form with a close 2-1 victory away at Barnton. Division Two Tarporley Victoria continued their climb up the table as a convincing 3-0 win at home against Moore United saw them move up to ninth spot. Mark Pearson, Mike Gibbons and Scott Armstrong all scored for Tarporley to secure all three points for the home side. Barnton Wanderers seem to have found their feet in the Cheshire League and after a ropey start have now secured two wins on the bounce to move themselves away from the bottom of the table. Gary Wakefield, Josh Perry (2) and Kieron Ellis all scored to move Wanderers up to twelfth spot. Grappenhall Sports shared the points as they drew 2-2 at home against Lostock Gralam. Grappenhall started brightly and missed a few early chances but it was the away side that struck first as they took the lead shortly before half time with a fine goal from Sam Wakefield. Grappenhall shot out of the blocks in the second half and were unlucky when Sam Shaw turned brilliantly in the box only to shoot wide from close range. Shaw made amends soon after when he slotted home after a goal mouth scramble to bring Grappenhall back on level terms. This spurred the home side on and they took the lead when Kurt McCarthy put a stunning through ball for Dan Sisson to slot home with aplomb. This opened the game up and there were chances a plenty at both ends. Lostock were fired up and a shot from Alex Burns in the 73rd minute brought the away side back into the game. Both sides had chances to win it but neither were able to take advantage. Congleton Vale closed the gap at the top to one point as they finished 3-2 winners at Egerton despite going down 1-0 early in the game. Matthew Ben Acom equalised for Vale towards the end of the first half and two second half goals from Richard Booth secured all three points for his side. Reserve Division Greenalls PSO made it five wins in a row as they finished 3-1 winners over Poynton. Two goals from Ben McWilliams and a class finish from Jon Leatherbarrow puts Greenalls three points clear at the top. Second place Linotype CHN suffered a 2-1 defeat at Billinge. Tom Ashall and Jordan Farrell scored for Billinge, with Linotype's goal coming from Wayne Grandison. Barnton finished 2-1 winners at Gamesley as James Cawley scored a late winner to snatch all three points as Barnton sit in sixth place. Goals from Adam Ashcroft and Daniel Kimber helped Grappenhall Sports to a 2-1 win at home against Denton Town, while Garswood United finished 6-2 winners as they beat Pilkington in the St Helen's local derby. Whaley Bridge stormed into third spot as they put five past new comers Egerton. Tom Scorer opened the scoring for the home side as he found the net twice in ten minutes to give Whaley a strong grip on the game. Jason Mellor added a third in the 35th minute, with Adam Robinson adding number four shortly after the hour mark. The scoring was concluded in the 80th minute with an Egerton own goal to mark the end of a successful day for Whaley Bridge. KAT DAVEY

YOUNG STORKS SEAL GREAT VICTORY Dave, Jayne and Hannah had re-stocked the Boot Room Cafe in anticipation of another sellout with today's visitors being top of the league Lynotype Cheadle HN Reserves. Such is the strength of the reserves at the moment big decisions had to be made by Paul and Keith picking a team plus five substitutes from an available squad of 18. Billinge were quick out of the blocks creating four excellent chances in the first 20 minutes; all falling to Rob Ablewhite who unusually for the striker failed to score. With another solid performance from Ant Farrell, Jay Parkin, Ant Higgins and the ever-impressive Geoff Parr at the back Billinge

gained the upper hand in the 1st half. However they were still susceptible to be hit on the break and but for the agility of Tom Hull pulled off a worldie save from point blank range punching the ball over the bar at full stretch they could have been behind. This warning shot lifted the Billinge team who replied with good efforts to score at the other end from Thomas Ashall, Jordan Farrell and Ablewhite again. Whilst Billinge were unlucky not to go in at the break at least three up but it remained 0-0. The second half was an even more enthralling affair from the Billinge entertainers and with both teams slogging it out something had to give. Young Jordan Farrell - on his full Billinge debut - lost possession on the edge of the box for the Cheadle striker Wayne Grandison to go on and score. The team felt for Jordan giving him great encouragement to keep his head up and carry on. Billinge were having good success down both wings with the two Ants - Farrell and Higgins - supplying Ashall and Daniel Hague who were getting forward with ease. Captain Joe Unsworth - in a more disciplined holding role - bossed midfield with the effervescent Derek Evans pushing forward for the vital equaliser. Ablewhite earned his team another free kick outside the box. Up stepped quick-thinking Anthony Farrell who curled a ball into Ashall's path who smashed the ball into the net from five yards to put The Storks level. Terry Jepson came on for Hague to cause even more havoc. Linotype were under so much pressure and it was only fitting that young Jordan Farrell found himself in the box with two defenders in front of him and found the technical ability to bend the ball round them into the top corner of the net to the pleasure of his team mates; more than making up for his earlier error. With five minutes to go there was another sting in the tail when the referee awarded Linotype with a penalty. It appeared to be a harsh decision but hero Hull made a brilliant save low down to his right earning his side all three points from top of the league Linotype Cheadle Reserves with Billinge Reserves winning 2-1 to continue their excellent form and winning run. There were excellent performances by all however MOM went to Tom Hull.

Relief at Last for Football Fans as Prices Fall The average cost of a ticket to see your favourite team has fallen by 2.4% according to the results of survey by the BBC. The BBC Sport Price of Football study found that the average cost of ticket prices across English football’s top four divisions has fallen for the 2013/14 season. The annual study - the biggest in British football - includes the prices of 164 clubs in the top 10 divisions, five leagues in England, four in Scotland and the Women's Super League. Last year's study showed the average price of the cheapest ticket in English football had gone up by 11% - four times the rate of inflation. But this year, average prices for the cheapest and most expensive matchday and season tickets were all down - as clubs in the Football League face up to an average 5% drop in attendances, from 9,949 in 2011-12 to 9,481 in 2012-13. In the top four divisions of English football, the biggest fall was 2.4% for the cheapest adult season ticket category, down from £344.63 in 2012 to £336.23 in 2013. The average for the most expensive adult season ticket also fell 1.6% - from £546.30 in 2012 to £537.60 in 2013. The average for the cheapest adult matchday ticket is down 1.9% - from £21.24 to £20.85. The average for the most expensive adult matchday ticket dropped 1% - from £34.11 to £33.81. In Scotland, the average price of the top flight's cheapest season tickets was 1% down. However, the average cost of the cheapest match-day tickets rose by more than 3%. The study also found: •The most expensive ticket in English football remains at Arsenal, where a category A adult matchday ticket can cost up to £126. Their cheapest ticket is £26. •The cheapest adult season ticket in the Premier League is £299 at Manchester City. The most expensive is £1,955 at Arsenal, although this includes seven cup matches. •The cheapest adult matchday ticket in men's football is £7 at Albion Rovers - the only men's club to charge less than £10. •The average price for an adult matchday ticket in the Women's Super League is just £5.38. •The most expensive pies in British football are at Crystal Palace and Kidderminster, with both charging £4. •The most expensive cup of tea is £2.50 at Manchester United - the same as in 2012. Manchester City also charged £2.50 last year, but have dropped their price to £1.80.

However, despite the overall reduction in prices the average cost of the cheapest season ticket in the Premier League has risen by over 4%, from £467.95 to £489.11 in the past year. But despite this, Premier League clubs enjoyed record season ticket sales in 2012/13 and a similar pattern is expected this season. Aaron Gourley, Deputy Editor at fcbusiness commented, “It’s no great surprise that prices overall have fallen. “Last year’s increase of around 11% seemed to be the final straw for many fans and with attendances, especially in the Football League, falling it’s satisfying to see the cost has started to come down. “For many years fans have been under intense financial pressure with the increasing cost of living, but despite this their appetite for football has not diminished and as we have seen, priced accordingly, fans will continue to attend football matches. “Football clubs over the past few years have realised that they need to offer fans real value for money and the increase in fan engagement activity has been a key factor in trying to stop the decline.” Mark Dewell, managing director, Advanced Ticketing, said, “It’s important to look beyond the headline ticketing price figures and understand what clubs are doing to engage with their fans. This includes rewarding loyalty as well as growing the overall supporter base. “As a technology supplier that offers a ticketing commerce platform for clubs, what we’re seeing is demand for flexibility in ticketing packages and promotions. Clubs want to deliver a great fan experience and making it affordable with a variety of great ticketing offers to a broader range of people is important. “This is especially the case to target families and younger members, as clubs have recognised how important it is to engage with the next generation of football supporters. Although price is an initial consideration, we know that it’s the whole match day experience that counts to encourage people to come back and become loyal fans." From fcbusiness.co.uk

Yeah, but will they be doing a programme?

Buckingham Palace is to host its first official football match as part of the Football Association's 150th anniversary celebrations. The Duke of Cambridge, president of the FA, helped arrange the game between two of England's oldest amateur clubs. Civil Service FC and Polytechnic FC, both based in Chiswick, west London, will play at the palace on 7 October. William will host the event and also present medals to 150 volunteers. The Queen gave her permission for the unique Southern Amateur League fixture. Wembley groundsman Tony Stones will work with the royal household gardeners to create a pitch in the 40-acre garden. William praised the 400,000 volunteers who help run local matches every year. He said: "In our 150th year, it is hugely important for the FA to honour the efforts of the many thousands of volunteers who week in, week out, help to provide the opportunity for millions more people to enjoy football at grassroots level." Greg Dyke, chairman of the FA, said he was "delighted" about the "first-ever game of football to be played at Buckingham Palace". Via bbc.co.uk Meanwhile here are some other questions: Will they do pies and Bovril? Will the referee and assistants fees cost more than the Cheshire League’s? Will the Royal Family sponsor the match ball? Who’s taking the nets down after the game?

Page 19: Billinge FC v Hale programme

FROM THE BOARDROOM: STEVE DICKSON – CHAIRMAN OF

BILLINGE FC I would like to welcome all of our fans to Billinge FC, our fan

base is certainly starting to grow. It is great to see new faces at every game and I can tell you that the players and staff all appreciate every single person who comes through the gate to support the team. I would of course also like to welcome Hale FC to Billinge, this is the first meeting of the clubs and will be a great test for both

teams for what appears on paper to be two well-matched teams. Billinge FC's results have been mixed this season, this is to be expected with all of the changes that have taken place through the summer but we are seeing signs of a turn round in fortunes. The Reserves have hit the ground running and are storming up the league and the Sunday team have had a couple of very creditable victories lately. The flag ship of the club i.e. the First Team are coming into the Hale game on the back of a very gutsy performance against Vulcan FC in the Guardian Cup. If they can show the same heart and desire certainly displayed in the second half and during extra time coupled with the undoubted quality that is in the team this should make for a really interesting encounter. Everyone at the club is working tirelessly to get a team together that is playing attractive football and consistently winning games, Paul Oakes will not allow our standards to drop he is a winner in every respect form his football to his life away from football, we all need to buy into his ethos and follow his lead. I am under no illusion, this is going to be roller coaster of a ride and won’t be easy; we are constantly looking for new players or promoting players from our other Senior Teams to find the ingredients needed for success. It is just a matter of time but we all know Paul will get a team together that is challenging for Silverware. The business side of the club is coming on leaps and bounds with sponsorship and support from our business partners being readily supplied and with the media coverage we are generating both in the written press and e-media on various social media platforms this ensures that our Sponsors are actually getting valuable advertising for their investment and support of our football club. Every penny we get from Sponsors and fans & supporters helps us to grow the club. Without fear of contradiction I can confirm that every penny is gratefully received. So let’s get the football game on, win lose or draw after the game the best food in the Cheshire League will be served by Jayne, Ann-Marie and Hannah in the Boot Room. Players, fans, officials and management will all mingle to talk and debate the action points that took place during the game. New friends will have been made and the good reputation of Billinge FC will be taken back to the West Cheshire League by our newest friends of Hale FC.

THE CONCISE HISTORY OF BILLINGE FOOTBALL CLUB

Billinge Football Club was founded in 1988 By Phil Middlehurst. They played then in the St Helens Combination at the Eddleston Playing Fields, Billinge. 1988-1989 to 1991-1992 Geoff Maggs was the first manager to take the reins of the newly-formed club. 1992-1993 to 1996-1997 Following Geoff Maggs' departure to pastures new, Les Pilling was installed as the club manager. 1997-1998 and 1998-1999 Billinge FC form a Reserve Team, Brian Collins is appointed First Team Manager and Les Pilling takes on the Manager's Job of the newly-created Reserve Team. 1999-2000 to 2004-2005 Manager Keith Amato, replaces Brian Collins as First Team Manager. Les Pilling continues his sterling work with the Reserve Team. Amato enjoyed success with Billinge FC bringing silverware to the club and being the first manager to take a Billinge team into the prestigious Mid-Cheshire League. 2005-2006 Paul Farrell is appointed as First Team Manager to replace Keith Amato, long time club stalwart Les Pilling is appointed as Farrell’s Assistant Manager and Colin Betts is appointed as Reserve Team Manager. 2007-2008 Ex-Wigan Athletic legend Bryan Griffiths is appointed as First Team Manager, assisted by Andrew Clough. Dave Knowles is appointed as the Reserve Team Manager. Knowles is the first Billinge manager to take a team to a Mid-Cheshire Cup Final, losing narrowly to Poynton on a penalty shootout. Following the highs of the Cup Final, various on-going issues meant that Knowles was to leave the club at the end of the season. 2008-2009 Griffiths and Clough get Billinge promoted to the top division in the Cheshire League. The club move grounds from Eddleston Fields to purpose-built facilities at Barrow Farm. Steve Dickson is appointed as Reserve Team Manager. 2009-2010 Griffiths and Clough consolidate the First Team in the Cheshire League top division and Dickson looks to re-build the Reserves with strong links into the Billinge Youth system. 2010-2011 Ex St Helens Town Manager Jimmy McBride comes out of retirement to take over the job of First Team Manager, Bryan Griffiths steps down to become assistant to McBride and Andrew Clough takes on the position of club Chairman.

Page 21: Billinge FC v Hale programme

High points include Neil McDermot, Gary Jones, Scott Tickle and Andy Ledger being named in the Cheshire League Inter-League Squad. Steve Dickson continues as Reserve Team Manager. At the end of the season McBride resigns after being offered his old job back at St Helens Town, McBride comes back for Andrew Clough as his Assistant Manager at Town. 2011-2012 Steve Dickson is promoted from the Reserves to the First Team, he appoints a Management Team including Adam Lowry as Head Coach, Rob Dainty as Assistant Manager and Les Pilling as Match Day Secretary. Dickson is given the task of re-building the team to have a more youthful look. A new Reserve Team Management Team is appointed with Brian Mather, Chez Tideswell and Campbell Wilson coming in with a host of new players. The First Team had a really good run of results which lead to a mid-table finish considering the disastrous start this was a great achievement, they were the first Billinge Senior Team to get to the Cheshire League's prestigious League Cup Final and the average age has been reduced to 22 years. The Reserves have equalled Dave Knowles feat of getting the Reserves to the Reserve Cup Final, they also went on to a league and cup double, beating Farnworth 3-0 in the Northern Cup Final then to be crowned as Cheshire League Reserve Division Champions. Following the Reserve Team's success at Billinge the management accepted an approach from Daten F.C and left to form Daten's first team. Billinge moved quickly to appoint Paul Oakes as the Reserve team manager, Oakes had enjoyed success with St Helens Combination Premier outfit Greenfields FC. Dave Knowles returned to the club as Assistant Manager to Oakes, with Rob Dainty taking on an advisory/youth development role, this position is temporary as Dainty will return to First Team duties. 2012-2013 Steve Dickson steered the First Team to safety in the top division while the Reserve Team, under Paul Oakes, finished a very respectable 7th. The Reserve Team became the first club to retain the Northern Cup when they beat Quarry Bank 3-1 in the final. 2013-2014 Paul Oakes and Steve Dickson take up the reins of the First Team management whilst Paul Farrell and Keith Amato are appointed Reserve Team managers. New members are added to the committee with Steve Dickson installed as chairman while the club runs a Sunday Team managed by committee member Dave Wood and playing in the South Lancs League at Barrows Farm as the club celebrates it’s silver anniversary.

GREENY ROCKS VULCAN What would seem an emphatic 7-3 win over Vulcan on Saturday saw Billinge through to the second round of the Warrington Guardian Cup. The Storks however had to come from 2-0 and 3-1 behind before scoring with the last kick of the game to make it 3-3 and take the tie into extra-time. Despite dominating possession the visitors went into the half-time break 2-0 down after they were undone by two identical set pieces. The first came on seven minutes when Vulcan captain Steve Taylor launched a ball into the area from a free-kick fully 50 yards from the goal. It wasn't dealt with and Craig Dearden neatly headed home. Seventeen minutes later a similar free-kick - this time from just inside the Storks half - was whipped in, Andrew Dove was left in space and headed home to make it 2-0. These were the only two chances Vulcan had while at the other end the hard-working Chad White went close on three occasions. His best chance came on 35 minutes when he found himself through on goal but his final effort was weak and easily saved. Then deep into stoppage time Whyte hit an audacious chip from 22 yards that beat the keeper but the ball came off the underside of the bar and was cleared. After a good 'talking to' and two tactical substitutions Billinge came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and within three minutes they had halved the deficit. Whyte was crudely brought down in the box and from the resultant spot-kick Graham Greene blasted the ball home. It appeared only a matter of time before the Storks would be level as Bobby Jones went close and substitute Elliot Bradshaw had a shot tipped onto the bar by the keeper. However on 58 minutes Vulcan's first sortie up field of the half Billinge captain Gareth Fletcher handled in the box gifting the hosts a penalty. Up stepped Taylor to send Aaron Cameron the wrong way and restore Vulcan's two-goal advantage at 3-1. It was now all-out attack for Billinge. Jones hit the side netting on 68 minutes and an unmarked Dan Curran headed wide after good work by Charlie Bloomfield. Another effort by Curran went just wide before Whyte blasted high and wide. However on 81 minutes Whyte made it 3-2 when he superbly headed home. The hosts were now out on their feet as Bradshaw tested the keeper. From the resultant corner Dave Quigley headed over the bar. Then two minutes into added-on time Bradshaw found Whyte in the box who cushioned his header back for Green to hammer home and take the game into extra-time. Vulcan were out on their feet and with just two minutes played Greene found himself through on goal and he made mistake to claim his hat-trick and put Billinge 4-3 ahead. Moments later it was 5-3 as Jones got on the end of another good ball from Bradshaw to finish well. The second period was all Billinge as Whyte got his second on eight minutes before Greene made it 7-3 netting his fourth with the best goal of the game after a brilliant long ball from Bradshaw. That was the final action of the game leaving assistant manager Steve Dickson a relieved man saying: "We made hard work of it but in the end we're through to the next round. "There were two outstanding performers in Graham Greene who got four goals and Elliot Bradshaw who came on at half-time and changed the game. "However we need to be aware we defended poorly in the first-half but we'll work on this in training and look forward to next week's game."

A COUPLE of weeks ago I was asked to play for a Non-League Legends team against a Showbiz XI, and yes, like you, I am still wondering why – there were some real grass-roots heroes on the pitch! Former Southall Town and Hayes prospect ‘Sir’ Les Ferdinand was the highest profile, while Wallingford Town product John Dreyer played for Luton in their top-flight heyday before ending his playing career back in Non-League with Stevenage and Maidenhead. In fact, before his second spell at Stevenage as a coach led to his current role at Preston North End, I used to see ‘Tumble’ regularly when he was helping out at Hemel Hempstead and Flackwell Heath and I was playing for Hitchin Town and Ware. John still had his boots on subbing up in Ryman One North as recently as 2007, and in our 2-1 win at Wealdstone’s Grosvenor Vale, he proved he’s still got the quality left foot that Luton fans remember fondly for delivering one-step penalties with unerring accuracy. It was also opportunity for me to catch up with a couple of former opponents who, thankfully, were on my side this time. First, Dave Regis led the line alongside Ferdinand, and although I knew him best for his goalscoring feats at Wembley for my club, Notts County, he did the Non-League rounds at clubs like Dunstable Town, Fisher Athletic, Windsor & Eton and Barnet before getting his big break at 26. As his career wound down at Hucknall Town in 1999-2000, I had to mark him in as a young Arnold Town centre-half. I reminded him about how I’d worn his stud marks from forehead to chin for a couple of weeks after clashing with the sole of his boot. He assured me it would have been accidental! Another former Underhill favourite in our side was Derek Payne, quite rightly awarded the man-of-the-match award. I used to play against Payney in Ryman One South when I was at Bracknell Town in 2002-03 and he was turning out for Egham Town. He’s 46 now, but anyone watching a couple of Sundays ago would think him much younger. He was non-stop in midfield, pirouetting on the ball to beat opponents half his age and spraying it in all directions with his elegant left foot. I asked the ex-Hayes, Watford, Southend and Peterborough man if he was still playing at all, and his response? “Nah, but I might do next season!” At 47, I’d argue a case for the pocket dynamo to still be able to do a job at Step 3, should the watching Wealdstone manager Gordon Bartlett wish to add to the ‘Dad’s Army’ he jokes he’s assembled with the likes of Glen Little, Scott McGleish and Chris Moore already on the cast list! In such esteemed company I realise that my presence was required not to give the back four an air of authority; ex-Hayes stalwart Reg Leather supplied that. But to give the match a bit of publicity. We were raising money in for Women V Cancer, a charity chosen because Leather’s wife Helen was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. Thankfully now in remission, Helen is raising money for the charity through a variety of events, culminating in her and sister-in-law Lesley joining their 400km cycle across Cuba next year. Donations can be made on their justgiving.com page with /LesleyHelenCuba tagged onto the end.

THE CHESHIRE SET: NEWS FROM AROUND THE CHESHIRE LEAGUE

PRESS REPORT 7 SEPTEMBER PART TWO: Division One Eagle Sports staged a dramatic late comeback to claim all three points in their midweek game against Pilkington. The home side started the game brightly

when Owen Ellis went close with a chance after a mazy run on the left. However, it was Pilkington who took the lead when the Pilkington midfielder placed the ball through the wall beyond McDermott from a free kick. Pilkington then began to play resolute football, battling for every ball and proving more than a match for the Eagle side. Both sides continued to battle in the second half but as time went on, Eagle finally found an equaliser in the 75th minute when Ged McAllister scored his first of the season as his lob looped over the Pilkington defence's heads following a Robinson long throw. Eagle then took the lead when Lee Boardman whipped in a corner to the back post and captain Richard Chinn powered his a header into the top corner. Eagle then took control of the game and could have extended their lead only for Quirk to hit the backtracking defenders after rounding the goalkeeper. Styal and Linotype CHN battled it out in an entertaining 0-0 draw while Knutsford and Barnton also shared the points as they drew 2-2 after Barnton had taken the lead late in injury time of the first half through Jordan Dwyer. Mike Schofield and Miko Lewis scored in the second half for Knutsford while a late goal from Ryan Malone earned Barnton a point. Greenalls PSO finished on top as they beat local rivals 1-0 in a derby that saw last season's Greenalls' player's player and manager's player of the year playing for Rylands. The game got off to a cagey start with most of the play being in the Rylands half but the home side defence stood firm. A Craig Hoyland free kick after good work from Benns was fired straight into the wall and Glendinning had a half chance but fired wide. Greenalls came out the brighter in the second period but both teams continued to cancel each other out, with Rylands growing into the game, Eyo came off the bench for Rylands and gave them a bit more attacking impetus. It was he who created Rylands best chance in the 83rd minute, with some good footwork he found space to cross but the ball landed behind Brown who headed wide. The goal came when Hanley turned into space in the middle and played Barnett in down the left channel, his cross was poorly dealt with and Lee Vaughan latched on to it and fired home low to the left of the keeper. Garswood United retained top spot as they drew 2-2 away at Whaley Bridge. Garswood dominated the first half and went 1-0 up through Scott Baker. Ten minutes after the break and Whaley Bridge were back on level terms when their centre forward released a wonder strike. Garswood were back in front soon after when Chris Francis dispatched a penalty after Tyler Jefferies was fouled in the box. A Nicky Prescott error lead to Whaley's second goal which secured a point for the home side. Chris Jackson and Ian Carr scored for Crewe to earn a 2-1 win at home against Knutsford, while Styal finished 5-1 winners against Denton Town. Joe Jennings was in fine form for Barnton as he scored three goals in as many minutes helping his side to a 4-1 win away at Pilkington. Reece Dwyer completed the scoring to finish off a successful day for the Northwich side. Gamesley finished 4-0 winners at home against Middlewich Town, while Ryan Jackson and Paul Alcock ensured that Rudheath made it six consecutive games unbeaten as they won 2-0 away at Greenalls PSO. A WORD FROM THE GAFFER

“We will be measured by what we achieve on the pitch this season”

GOOD afternoon and welcome to Barrows Farm

for our LCFA Challenge Cup tie against West

Cheshire League opponents Hale FC.

We welcome a Hale team who have started the

season well with have four wins one draw and three

losses and lie fifth in the West Cheshire League First

Division. No doubt today will be another tough fixture

where Billinge FC will need to ensure attitude is spot

on and is there to compliment the undoubted ability we have at the

club. We have had a somewhat mixed start to the season in our

league but when we have been good we have been very good and

this has given us great belief but we know there is still a lot of work

to be done.

Last week we progressed in the Warrington Guardian Cup. It wasn’t

the easiest of ways to go through but when you play a team from

lower in the pyramid you often have to battle hard to get through.

So credit to Vulcan for their performance and the way they pushed

us right the way to the 90th minute.

It was great to see our three forwards getting on the goal sheet as

Bobby got his season underway, Chad got his second and third of

the season and Graham Greene got off the mark in style scoring

four goals. Greeny’s attitude has been spot-on since he came to the

club and the only thing missing from his performances has been

goals. He’s on the way now so we expect great things from a quality

player. It is also good to see James Webb getting back to full fitness

as the squad begins to take shape. From that squad a special word

has to go out to Gareth Fletcher who – as captain – has set a

magnificent example and has been our stand-out performer of the

season so far. The target this season is simple – to bring some First

Team silverware to Barrows Lane Farm and today we have a chance

in the Liverpool Challenge Cup. We know it will be a really tough

game but please enjoy it and may the best side on the day go

through and here’s hoping for an exciting encounter.

Yours in Sport,

PAUL OAKES: MANAGER OF BILLINGE FC
