As a result of the Tues- day decision, which followed a two-hour teleconference hearing Monday, owner Fred Bradley will forfeit the $1.2 million earned by the Brass Hat when he finished second to Electrocutionist in the race at Nad al Sheba racecourse in the United Arab Emirates. Stewards later disqualified Brass Hat, and moved Wilko to second, after a post-race test detected a trace of the drug methyl prednisolone acetate. While the outcome of the positive test was not in dispute, the Bradleys contended that the administration of the therapeutic medication 28 days prior to the World Cup was well within the guidelines distributed by the ERA to trainers with horses running in the world's richest race. Those guidelines, listed on the sheet of "Dubai Equine Hospital Medication Withdrawals," show a 23-day withdrawal time for methyl prednisolone acetate, indicating the time frame in which it can be given a horse and not be detected in the horse's system in a post-race test. William Johnson, the attorney representing the Bradleys, said his clients were disappointed but not surprised by the decision to uphold the disqualification. Johnson said he hopes the ERA will either change the withdrawal times on the sheet distributed to trainers or discontinue use of the document. "I would hope they would not continue to use what I think is deception on their part," Johnson said. FOUR ADDED TO IRISH DERBY John Pearce's Dragon Dancer (GB) (Sadler's Wells) has been given the green light to line up in this Sunday's G1 Irish Derby after track conditions at The Curragh eased in favor of the Vodafone Derby run- ner-up. Pearce supplemented the bay sophomore at a cost of i100,000 as did connections of G1 Derby Italiano winner Gentlewave (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}) and G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero Darsi (Fr) (Polish Precedent). Joseph Joyce's Cougar Bay (Ire) (Daylami {Ire}) com- pletes the quartet of additions to the Budweiser-sponsored Classic. "Dragon Dancer is in good form," trainer Geoff Wragg told PA Sport , adding, "He worked nicely [last] Saturday and I should think he'll travel over on Friday. It's sure to be a competitive race though." His Highness The Aga Khan's racing manager Georges Rimaud is also satisfied with French Derby winner Darsi's progress and told Racing Post , "Everything has gone well, the horse worked [Monday] morning and behaved very nicely. Everything seems to be in order and he is in very good form. He is a quiet, very easy-going horse who needs to be worked a cou- ple of times a week just to keep him awake, but he is quite easy to prepare. It would be a shame to miss running in the race as he is in very, very good form and this is a good opportunity." Track conditions at the Co. A few weeks ago we discussed the influence ofNashua as a broodmare sire of sires. The 1955 Horse ofthe Year has made his principal impact in that role as the sire of the dams of Roberto and Mr. Prospector, and through those horses, he is frequently appearingduplicated in high-class pedigrees, the most recentexample being Barbaro. Despite being a much bettersire of fillies and broodmares than colts and sires,Nashua does however have a male line which is still inexistence, and it was represented by a notable winnerlast weekend when Memorette captured the GII BeverlyHills H. Appropriately, Memorette descends from a Nashuason who primarily plied his trade on the West Coast. This is Good Manners, a son of the the excellent pro-ducer, Fun House (dam of six stakes winners and sub-sequently ancestress of Windsharp, Johar and Dessert).Good Manners won the five-furlong Haggin S. at two,and although he never added another black-type win,he was stakes-placed at four and five, ending his careerwith nine wins in 57 starts. Good Manners was ex-ported to stand in Argentina, and was a great successin that country, siring 57 stakes winners, and becomingLeading Sire in 1979.

Several other horses from Good Manners' sire linehave become major stakes winners in the U.S., includ-ing recently-deceased Paseana (Ahmad), a two-timeeclipse award winner; GI Malibu S. winner, Lord Grillo(by Englillado); and the GI Santa Margarita InvitationalH. heroine, Lovellon. Memorette's sire, Mocito Guapo, raced in Argentina, winning four races, including the G2 ClasicoComparacion and G3 Premio Bolivia. He's stood his stud career in Chile, and has been a great success inthat country, getting several champions, includingMemorette's sire Memo and Malek, a champion two-year-old in his native country, and subsequentlywinner of the GI Santa Anita H. Memo, who like Malek is out of a mare by theBuckpasser horse, Chairman Walker, was the leader ofhis generation in his native country at two and three. InChile, he won seven of 11 starts, including the G1 GranCriterium, G1 Clasico 2000 Guineas, G1 Gran PremioCriadores, G1 Clasico Tanteo de Potrillos, and was alsosecond in G1 El Derby. Memo campaigned in the U.S.at five, six and seven. Four times stakes placed at five, including when second in the GIII Native Diver H.,Memo won the GII San Bernardino H. and the Smile H.,and was third in the GI California S. at five. Althoughthe San Bernardino win came at nine furlongs, Memocampaigned as a sprinter at five, and was better thanever. From five starts he took the GII CommonwealthBreeders' Cup S., GIII Triple Bend S. (in a new trackrecord) and Governor's Cup, and was second in the GIIIChurchill Downs H. and GIII Bing Crosby H. Retired to stand at Ridgeley Farm, Hemet, California,Memo's popularity at stud was no doubt impacted byhis rather unfamiliar pedigree, and his first three cropsproduced only 89 foals. However, good efforts by hisearly runners saw him begin to get larger books, andMemorette is a member of his fifth crop, which con-tained 66 foals. Porter cont.

Overall, considering his opportunities, Memo hasproved to be a very useful sire for the region, and hisother stakes winners include Grey Memo, a three-timegraded winner with earnings of over $1,300,000; theGII Potrero Grande victor McCann's Mojave; andBordonaro, winner of the GIII Count Fleet Sprint H. andGIII Vernon O. Underwood S. Memo's total of 16stakes winners also includes the Chilean Group 1 win-ners Miyasaki and Mickleson. Virtually all of Memo's best offspring have beensprinters, or sprinter/milers, but Memorette has provedto be an exception, recording her most important vic-tory at 1 1/4 miles. Doubtless much of her stamina, andher turf ability, comes from her broodmare sire,Shahrastani. That son of Nijinsky II was a top-classhorse at 1« miles, winning the G1 English and G1 Irish Derbies at that trip. Retired to stud in the U.S., heproved to be a considerable disappointment getting just13 stakes winners in seven crops, six group or graded, but none at the highest level. Subsequently,Shahrastani traveled to Ireland, Japan, back to Ireland, and is now serving as a National Hunt sire in England. Memorette's second dam, Fondre, also has plenty ofstamina in her pedigree, as she is by championthree-year-old Key to the Mint, winner of the GI Travers S., the GI Woodward S., and runner-up in theGI Jockey Club S., in the days when it was contestedat two miles, while her dam is by Gallant Man, winnerof the GI Travers S., the GI Belmont S. and GI JockeyClub Gold Cup. A talented performer, Fondre was actu-ally more speedy than her background would havesuggested, as she took the Monrovia Handicap at six furlongs; as well as the Golden Poppy, Hillsboroughand Ready Wit Invitational handicaps at eight furlongs. In addition to Memorette's dam, Forever Fondre, Fondreis also dam of Paradise Found (by Halo)--a stakes win-ner who also took third in the GII Peter Pan S.--and theGI Yellow Ribbon Invitational H. runner-up, FondlyRemembered.

Coincidentally, Fondre's third dam, Lebkuchen, ishalf-sister to the dam of Determine, a California-bredwho captured the Kentucky Derby the year beforeNashua. From a pedigree pattern standpoint, what is probablymost interesting here is the connection betweenMemo's maternal grandsire, Chairman Walker, and Shahrastani's sire, Nijinsky II. Chairman Walker is byBuckpasser (by Tom Fool) out of a mare by a grandsonof Nearco. Nijinsky II is by a grandson of Nearco out ofFlaming Page (a Bull Dog/Menow cross, which is areverse to the cross which produced Tom Fool).Nijinsky II didn't combine well with Buckpasser mares,as they tended to be a bad physical match, but theyhave proved to be a potent combination further back inpedigrees.

ASCOT SIRE LINES You might have thought I said Ascot sight lines, butyou know what my views are on that subject, and theyhaven't changed since last week. Ascot says they willbe addressing lots of issues, but finding more places forRoyal Enclosure badgeholders to watch the races livehas not featured among the list of priorities I've seenlisted. So let's move on to Sire Lines, an even morerelevant subject, considering that Ascot's 30 racesconsist of 17 Group races (six G1, eight G2, three G3),five Listed races, and eight handicaps, all of which areworth big money. It cannot be a coincidence that nineof the 30 races (30 percent) were won by the progenyof Danzig, or sires descending from him in male line, and that a total of 19 races (63 percent) were won byNorthern Dancer-line sires. Adding the nine Danzigstogether with the five Sadler's Wells-line winners (threeof them three-year-old winners by the week's leadingsire of winners, Montjeu), those two branches of North-ern Dancer alone accounted for 14 winners--47 percentof the total. As Rachel Pagones pointed out in her review in Tues-day's Racing Post, Danzig himself had two winners: theone-mile G1 winner Ad Valorem; and an uncharacteris-tic two-mile G3 winner in Soapy Danger, whose damOn A Soapbox, though by the sprinter-miler Mi Cielo, was herself out of a mare by the mighty stayer StageDoor Johnny, and won the GI C.C. American Oakswhen it was still run over 12 furlongs. He was the firstleg of a fourth-day double for owner Renata Jacobs, from the first crop of breeder Newsells Park Stud, andwas the second leg of a treble for trainer MarkJohnston. But the feat of On A Soapbox and StageDoor Johnny of instilling staying capacity into SoapyDanger itself nearly pales in significance when youconsider the pedigree of Baddam, the first horse I haveever heard of to sweep the Ascot S. (20 furlongs) and Queen Alexandra S. (21 furongs) double. Afour-year-old, trained by Mick Channon and from thefirst crop by the GI Middle Park winner Mujahid, himselfby Danzig out of a Storm Cat mare, all you really needto say, again as Rachel pointed out on Tuesday, is thathis dam is by Ela-Mana-Mou. That is a great example ofhow a pedigree is not a blend' of influences, but inmany cases, an individual throws back' to something inits pedigree. In Baddam's case, he may be by Mujahid, but he has 100 percent certainly inherited the ability towin two races totaling more than five miles in oneweek from his damsire. Not one of the six sons or grandsons of Danzig whosired Ascot winners last week began his career for asmuch as 10,000 anythings they all began their studcareers at four-figure fees.

I don't know exactly what that means, but I knowit's good news for a lot of smaller breeders. Though histwo principal European sire sons both drew blanks atthe meet, Danehill had no fewer than seven placedhorses, and his sons, Danehill Dancer and Danetime, both sired winners. Green Desert also had no winners, but his son, Cape Cross, of course sired GI Prince ofWales's winner Ouija Board, who is from his first crop. Outside of the Danzig and Sadler's Wells lines, theother Northern Dancer-line sire who had a big meet wasMarju; the son of Last Tycoon had two winners, includ-ing the great Soviet Song (GII Windsor Forest) and thethree-year-old Britannia H. winner, Sir Gerard. He alsohad two other placed three-year-olds: Asset, second inthe G3 Jersey (seven furlongs); and Hazeymm, third inthe 10-furlong Listed Hampton Court S. After Northern Dancer, the number two male line atAscot this year was Native Dancer (who of course alsofigures as the damsire of Northern Dancer), with seven;this consisted of six from the Mr. Prospector line, andone by Selkirk, a son of Sharpen Up. Machiavellian wasparticularly prominent this year: he had the Royal HuntCup winner Cesare on his own behalf, and his sec-ond-crop son, Medicean, had two, including the GICoronation S. winner Nannina. This propelled Mediceaninto third spot on the European second-crop sire chartin cumulative earnings, behind Mozart and Galileo, butnow ahead of Bertolini and Mull Of Kintyre, sire of St.James's Palace S. winner, Araafa.

P R E S U L T S P

Typically, the top five European second-crop siresconsist of three from the Danzig line, two by Danzighimself and one by Danehill; one by Sadler's Wells; andone by Mr. Prospector's son, Machiavellian. Two otherMr. Prospector lines were prominent without winning:both Gone West's son, Zafonic and his son, Xaar, hadplaced horses, as did Kingmambo's third-crop son,King's Best. Northern Dancer and Native Dancer combined ac-counted for 26 of the 30 Ascot winners. The other twoconsisted of two each for the other two major Phalarissire lines, Royal Charger (here through Roberto) and histhree-quarter brother, Nasrullah. Les Arcs, from the firstcrop by Kris S.'s son Arch, surprisingly won the GIGolden Jubilee, a six-furlong sprint, for the Roberto line;and the vastly underrated Intikhab, son of Red Ransomand sire also of G2 Norfolk second Hoh Mike, had theListed Sandringham winner Red Evie, a three-year-oldfilly. In a small but possibly very significant wrinkle, both Nasrullah-line winners were among the three win-ners for freshman sires: Gilded, by the surprisingRedback (by Mark of Esteem, by Darshaan, by ShirleyHeights, by Mill Reef), won the G2 Queen Mary; whileElrahim, from the first crop by Noverre (by Rahy, byBlushing Groom), won the Listed Windsor Castle S. Ironically both are five-furlong races, while thesix-furlong Coventry was won by Hellvelyn, whose sireIshiguru (by Danzig) was only a five-furlong horse him-self. That may be one for the ever-expanding Go Figure'file; but it is also quite interesting, in this era of North-ern Dancer dominance in Europe, to see that two of thefreshman sire winners at Royal Ascot are actually fromanother line. Speaking of other lines, though, 30 win-ners out of 30 did trace in male line to Phalaris (1913),the Eclipse of the Twentieth Century. That doesn'tbode well for the survival of all those non-Phalaris lines, for example Hyperion, Princequillo, Ribot and ManO'War.]

A # will distinguish first-time stakes-winners, a @ willindicate first-time graded stakes-winners, a s willdenote a first-time Grade/Group 1 winner.

How To Do It... Finally, a word about the World Cup of the planet'smost popular sport, called football most places, but soccer in the U.S., to distinguish it from gridiron or American football. A German friend of mine who hasjust returned from two weeks in Germany, where it'sbeing held this time, was rapturous: ‘one big streetparty’, he said, ‘an orgy of football.’ The coverage of,and the interest in this tournament, held every fouryears, is phenomenal: it dwarfs Royal Ascot and any-thing else we in the horse business can do. Maybe I'mlooking for correlations where there are none to befound, but I can't help thinking the existence of aninternational administration which sets the rules has alot to do with soccer/football's success. It doesn'tmatter where in the world you go, the rules are thesame, and you can figure out what's going on in frontof you. I watch with wistful admiration at its success, and I like Argentina to win the final, provided they getpast Germany this Friday, and then win their semi-final.

H E A S T H2:01p 3rd-BEL, $45K, Alw, 3yo/up, f/m, 6fTVG BURMILLA (Storm Cat), a full to MGSW Magicalmysterycat,

was purchased by Darley for $850k as a KEESEP yearling, and looked the part in her first outing. Sent off the tepid 3-1choice at Gulfstream Jan. 22, she romped by 4 1/4 lengths. Offsince, she’s registered bullets in four of her last six works.Garrett Gomez rides for the Eoin Harty barn. May Day Vow(Broken Vow) is an interesting play. The sophomore won byan eye-catching 12 lengths in her lone start, a 4 1/2-furlongtest at Aqueduct in April of her two-year-old season. Hermorning drills have been pedestrian, but trainer MichaelHushion can get ‘em ready off the bench. brisnet.com pps

3:15p 5th-CDX, $50K, Msw, 3yo/up, 1mTTVG GYROVAGI (Saint Ballado) ran a dismal sixth sprinting on the

main track in his first career start at Gulfstream Mar. 25, but it’sdoubtful that’s this three-year-old’s game. The Pin Oakhomebred is a half to the very good turf runner Bedankan(Geri), a 10-time stakes winner of over $530k, and the surfaceswitch, along with the added ground, could be just what thedoctor ordered for the Bill Mott trainee. brisnet.com pps

4:40p 8th-BEL, $46K, Alw/Opt.Clm. ($75,000), 3yo/up, 1mTVG DR. PLEASURE (Thunder Gulch) drew attention his week

when his trainer, John Ward, told Daily Racing Form hethought the son of champion Beautiful Pleasure would turn outto be the best sophomore in his barn. That’s quite a statementconsidering the talented Strong Contender is a stablemate.Last year’s Cowdin S. runner-up, seventh in the GI Breeders’Cup Juvenile, comes into the race off a well-beaten third in hisseasonal debut sprinting at Keeneland Apr. 12. Sir Halory(Unbridled), one of two four-year-olds in the race, sports apedigree as good as anybody’s: his dam is the top producerHalory.
