Newsletter of Arizona Pathfinders, Inc. A VOLUNTEER SUPPORT ORGANIZATION OF THE ARIZONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY April 2014 PATHFINDERS ANNUAL MEETING & POTLUCK Tucson historian and journalist Dave Devine entertained Pathfinders with the story ofTucson’s sexy, submersible Stone Avenue subway at the annual meeting and potluck on March 20, 2014. Dave used the city’s futile efforts to correct the subway’s flooding problems for almost 100 years to illustrate the community’s inability to efficiently solve its dilemmas. Roars of laughter greeted quotes from local officials who assured citizens that a solution to “Lake Elmira” stood just a short time away. Photos of its namesake in her swimsuit, a man standing atop a submerged vehicle, and a motorboat crossing the “lake” sparked further chuckles. Look for Dave’s book during August 2015. Following the program members elected Roberta “Bobbie” Crawford, Barbara Myers and Armando Vargas to the Board of Directors. The Board then elected officers for the coming year: Bill Kalt, president; Bobbie Crawford, vice-president; John Flynn, treasurer; Charity Everitt, secretary andTommy Friedmann, member-at-large. Past and future in so. new Mexico

five day Pathfinder tour, March 2014From beautiful collections of ancient fossils and slices of petrified wood to the future of sub-orbital space travel, we packed a great deal about past and present southern New Mexico into five days.

The well-planned and -organized tour included five historic sites, five museums and two venues devoted to New Mexico’s place in modern military and aviation technology. Our tour guides were always excellent, well-informed and entertaining.

We visited several historic mission sites near El Paso: a farm and ranch museum complete with milking demonstration, the White Sands Missile Museum, and the reborn ghost town of Shakespeare. Several of the small museums were real gems. the Zuhl Museum on the New Mexico State University campus is filled with marvelous specimens of fossils and petrified wood.

Exhibits in the Geronimo Springs museum in Truth or Consequences showcased the Native American,

Hispanic, ranching, mining and military histories of the area, as well as its national notoriety thanks to Ralph Edwards’ TV show. The Luna-Mimbres Museum in Deming has a first class collection of Mimbres pottery, as well as large donated collections of geodes, dolls, vintage trucks and automobiles, Victoriana and much more.

Both the White Sands Missile Museum and Spaceport America highlight New Mexico’s ongoing contribution to the U.S.’s technological innovation. The latter, even though in early stages of development, is quite an experience.  Every day ended with a superb meal and good conversation.

Kudos and many thanks to the travel committee who worked so hard to make this happen.  These tours are Pathfinders’ primary fund raising events, so please consider taking part in future trips – you will not be disappointed.

PATHFINDERS, c/o ARIZONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY, 949 EAST SECOND STREET, TUCSON AZ 85719

Photo Preservation workshoPOn Saturday, February 22, 2014, registrants attended an interesting and informative two-hour educational workshop at the Arizona Historical Society regarding preservation of photos.  Mr. Fred Hood, a Fine Arts Photographer, and a twenty-year employee at Jones Photo in Tucson delivered the enlightening information.

Mr. Hood said three things that ruin photographs are heat, light and humidity. He reminded us that given proper care, black and white film photos are longer lasting than their counterparts, color film photos as well as digital photos. We also learned that flash drives, digital camera cards and cell phones are merely transfer devices, and not to be used for storage.

Wilhelm Research is a long-time independent and reliable testing company for determining the reliability and stability for the preservation of photo paper and traditional color photos.

To preserve photos it is best that they be stored in archival boxes where it is dark or in a photo album using acid-free plastic sleeves. Digital photos should be kept in two copies, on external hard drives or Fuji white coated CD or DVD disks. (Real gold coated is best.)

Have your photos printed professionally on archival paper. Home inkjet or dye-based printers are not good quality. Keep all important photos in two copies: one for display and one in a dark dry place.

4 — Pathfinders Press

your Pathfinder PressThe Pathfinder Press was published and printed by Margaret and Kenn Schultz for many years. Mailing costs were high so in 2009 we looked for someone who would convert the Press to an electronic format. We still mail copies of the Press to people who don’t have a computer or who request us to do so.

We posted our request on a forum. Donna Kamper of Kamper & Kamper offered to help us and the result has been a very positive one. Donna and John became members of Pathfinders. We thought it would be interesting for the members to know more about them, so we asked Donna to tell us about Kamper & Kamper.

Five years ago, in December 2009, the Pathfinders board called on Kamper & Kamper to produce the Pathfinder Press. It has been our pleasure to work with Pathfinders since then and we are very gratified you have been pleased with the result.

Kamper & Kamper offers multiple services. We help businesses reinforce their visual presence by designing a consistent “look” for their newsletters, brochures, websites, etc. We have converted several newsletters such as the Press from print to e-mail distribution (in part or completely), realizing a considerable savings for the entity involved.

We also retouch/restore photos by bringing original colors back, removing unwanted details, adding a
