Tdap Vaccine Why?Tdap=Tetanus, diphtheria and Pertussis whooping-cough

• TETANUS (T) causes painful tightening of the muscles. It can cause “locking” of the jaw so you cannot open your mouth or swallow. About 1 person out of 5 who get tetanus dies.

• DIPHTHERIA (D) can cause breathing problems, paralysis, and heart failure. Before vaccines, diphtheria killed tens of thousands of children every year in the United States.

• PERTUSSIS (aP), also known as Whooping Cough, causes coughing spells so bad that it is hard for infants and children to eat, drink, or breathe. It can cause pneumonia, seizures, brain damage, or death.

Tdap Vaccine

• Tdap vaccine includes Tetanus, diphtheria and Pertussis (whooping cough)

diphtheria and Pertussis (whooping cough)

Tuberculosis Screening Why?● 1st case can be traced back to 9,000 years ago.

● 1953 first CDC report 84,000 cases at that time, 2016 9,272.

● Untreated ,TB can kill approximately one half of patients within five years.

● Worldwide about 1.6 million people die of TB every year.

● Active, Latent and antibiotic resistant.

● The main way to avoid infection with the bacteria that cause TB is to avoid exposure to people with active disease

Page 11: BILH 03845 JD Hospital Orientation with OSHA 2019ppt

Tuberculosis Screening

• Initial testing required for all new hires • 2 step testing

• Annual screening • Based on TB Risk Assessment

• Post exposure • Baseline and then 8 -10 weeks later

Page 12: BILH 03845 JD Hospital Orientation with OSHA 2019ppt

Influenza (Flu) Vaccine

• 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu

• More than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications and about 36,000 people die from flu.

fatigue, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle aches

Page 17: BILH 03845 JD Hospital Orientation with OSHA 2019ppt

How Flu Is Spread• Person to person through

coughing or sneezing of people with influenza

• Touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching mouth or nose

• Can infect others 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 days after becoming sick – so you may pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick

Page 18: BILH 03845 JD Hospital Orientation with OSHA 2019ppt

Influenza Vaccine• Flu Shot is mandatory as a condition of

employment. Need physician documentation if medical contraindication.

• Vaccine is from inactivated virus so it is not possible to get the flu from the injection.

• Mild sore arm is typical side effect.

• Every employee must receive flu vaccination every flu season.
