Why Bike Facilities in thispark?The City of Surrey is experiencinggrowing demands for non-traditionalbicycle recreation, including off-roadmountain biking and BMX riding.With few formal facilities in our city,the riding community has developedinformal or “rogue” facilities throughoutSurrey’s parks. To help better managethis growing sport and reduce thenumber of informal facilities in Surrey,the Bicycle Recreation FacilitiesStrategy was developed in 2007 toprovide guidelines for the provision ofnew facilities, the upgrade of existingnon-traditional facilities, and themaintenance and operating requirementsof these facilities for the future. Throughresearch, surveys, and public involvement,a number of bike facility sites were chosenfor improvements, including InvergarryPark.

We are here to present a draft concept plan for the east side of Invergarry Park which includes bike facilities,natural area management, and walking trails.

Launching a bike over large,man-made dirt jumps,attempting aerial tricks in theprocess

Dirt Jumps Pump TracksSmall, dirt tracks designed with tightand banked corners, and small bumps.The goal is to go around the track withoutpedaling. Riders ‘push’ their bikes intoand around the corners and bumps tobuild up momentum and speed.

Downhill Trail Riding

Riding down steep andtechnical gradients on a oneway trail. In free-riding, trailsmay include a variety ofobstacles and jumps whichare creatively navigated.

Invergarry Park is a city-level park, which means it will support destination park facilitiesfor Surrey, and is a good location for a bike park.

Invergarry Park Background and Research

A Survey was undertakenfor the subject site to mapexisting trails, watercourses,significant trees, bike jumps,and topography. Whereverpossible, the new concept planuses these existing features tominimize disturbance tothe natural area.

As a natural area park, an Environmental Assessmentwas completed to determine if the site is suitable for activerecreation facilities, such as a bike park.

Bon Accord Creek is a “Class A” (fishbearing) watercourse. A ripariansetback is required to protect theintegrity of the stream so as not toresult in harmful alteration, disruption, ordestruction of fish habitat.

Bon Accord Creek islocated at the bottom ofa steep ravine. A 15mtop of bank setbackwill ensure the futurestability of the ravineand prevent erosion andslope failure.

Unsanctionedtrails within theriparian and 15msetbacks will bedecommissionedwhere possible and the setback arearestored. Remainingtrails within the setbackswill be carefully monitoredand maintained to ensurethey do not causedetrimental impacts to thestream and slope.

4 ecotypeshave beenidentifiedin the subjectsite:

Wallace Creekis a “Class B”(providesfood andnutrients todownstreamfish habitats)watercourseand will beprotected with a15m setback.

Invergarry Park supports avariety of wildlife includingbirds, amphibians,reptiles, and mammals,such as the Black-Tailed Deer.

Existing trails currentlysupport conflicting uses.The concept plan createsseparate walkingand biking trails.

The other 2 ecotypes occurover the majority of the siteand consist of young anddisturbed, opendeciduous stands,

with many invasive species inthe understorey. Dumping of garbage and concrete debrisis evident in these areas. Thebike facilities will be limited tothe disturbed ecotypes.

2 ecotypes occur in and alongthe top of the ravine.

These consist ofsignificant mature andconiferous dominatedtree stands which will beprotected by the riparian and15m setbacks.
