“Motivation is what gets youstarted…

Habit is what keeps you going” said JimRyun, an American Athlete. It got me thinking that many of us whohave set our goals and wishes at the beginning of the year may befinding that now the summer is upon us, and willpower is loweringas we think of slipping into Autumn, that those things we ferventlyset out to achieve in January may be sliding from our grasp.

And perhaps the reason is that we either weren’t committed todoing what we decided all those months ago, or we didn’t get intothe HABIT of making that thing happen. Indeed a decision we madelast year as a couple was to incorporate a fresh juice into our diet, atleast once daily. We enjoyed blending fresh kale from the garden, including thick broccoli stems which would ordinarily end up on thecompost, various fruit and other vegetables and chucking in copiousamounts of ginger which sent Sean's hayfever packing (anunexpected, but very welcome result!).

With the cleaning of the blenders and juicers, and the extra bit oforganisation needed to make these each day it would have beeneasy to stop eventually. But once it became a habit it’s tough tobreak. So even when we have days out we make sure that we getour juice and do you know, if you look out for them there are juicebars popping up everywhere. So we grabbed one recently in HydePark at a festival, in a little street in Ibiza on a holiday and even thekids join in now, despite what can seem a very dubious mixsometimes!

If there’s something you want to do, or yourresolve has slipped, get started again and we’llhear no more excuses!

Much love until next monthCoralie and Sean x

In order to support their strive forexcellence a community must backit’s schools.

The summer break will soon be herefor the children and staff ineducation. I hope that the staff of ourlocal schools get a really goodbreak. I want to applaud our schoolsin Alverstoke parish where there are 7infant and junior schools and ouramazing Bay House School and VIForm. In my work I am a governor forthree of the schools. The schools doan excellent job for our children and allthe staff truly do deserve atremendous applause and muchappreciation.

I’ve been a school governor for 18years serving a variety of schools andam a member of the Diocesan Boardof Education. Changes in educationand in the school environment havebeen non-stop in all that time such thatmany Big Voice readers who mightvisit a school truly would not recogniseit from their own childhood. Educationis different today.

Standards and the quality of educationhave markedly improved and withthem have the expectations of society, government and parents to‘deliver’. There is a pressure on staff

which would have been unimaginedby previous generations of teachers(speaking with 9 teachers in my familyand an HMI). It is not wrong that thestandard should be ‘excellent’ but thepressure to deliver this on anindividual basis for each and everychild is huge on staff who are veryprofessional today and cannot ‘coast’through lessons and a schoolday. The politicians now say that eventhe schools which constantly deliver‘outstanding’ results are cruising andneed to do better! Schools do deliverthese days and there is no justificationfor any further erosion of the respectschools and staff need in order tothrive on behalf of the students.

It is a privilege to serve local schoolswhich arise out of our community andneed our whole community to supportand care for them. Our schools wouldlove greater links with the communitiesin which they are placed - folks helpingas volunteers, people to be governors, sponsors for events and equipmentetc. Could that be you?

Besides a number of school staff, as aparish church there are some 20members involved as governors oflocal schools and others as classroomvolunteers. One of my church staffhas been helping as class volunteer

with weekly reading over the pastyear. Alverstoke Parish has started anew Assemblies Team of 6 folk whovisit the primary schools to lead‘collective worship’ and tell storiesthrough the children acting or withpuppets. For one school this even ledon to some creative writing and dramawhilst in another we’re creating a‘Forging Links’ group to see how theparish can better support the school.

Whether or not we get involved withour local schools let us afford the staffand volunteers the care and respectthey need from their localcommunity. It is by such widersupport for them that they will continueto excel on behalf of the children.

Auto biographies

In 1982 Mitsubishi MotorsCorporation launched a brand newbreed of vehicle: a 4x4 which wastough enough to go where othersfeared to tread, yet enjoyed the sortof sophisticated specification morenormally associated with top endsaloons. More than thirty years laterthe Shogun is a living legend.

The 2015 Mitsubishi Shogun has abold new front end, distinguished bya deeper more integrated grille andchic LED daytime running lights. Thedesign changes for this yearrepresent a progressive evolution ofthe hard-hitting Japanese off-roader.

Naturally, the Mitsubishikeeps its go-anywhere, self-assured and powerfully builtpresence. This ischaracterised by its shortfront overhang, uprightwindscreen, strong highflanks, flared wheel-archesand rear-mounted sparewheel. These are all keyShogun styling cues thatunderline its mud-pluggingaptitude.

Indeed, standing next to theShogun makes you feel prettysmall. The vehicle isenormous and looks ratherintimidating to drive. Butonce you haul yourself intothe cabin, turn the key, select‘Drive’ from the automaticgearbox and get rolling, anyunease evaporates.

By no means is the brutealways a delight to drive onthe road though. Sure, it’seasy to point the Shogundown a motorway and staythere, but any cross winds doknock you about a bit. That’sno surprise as it’s a tallvehicle – and because of that

you can also forget tearing aroundbends on country roads, unless youlike lots of lean.

Instead, the new Mitsubishi Shogunis about muscle and ruggedness. Thetop of the range Long Wheel Base(LWB) SG4 model, on test here, pullslike a train with its 3.2-litre,194bhp,four-cylinder diesel engine.0-62mph arrives in 11.1 seconds andtop speed is 112mph. Moreimportantly it has low-ratio gearingand a differential lock to make sureyou’ve got the best chance ofgetting it out of even the mostchallenging of non-tarmacsituations.

The Mitsubishi Shogun is not only agiant of a 4x4, its cabin feels solidlyscrewed together and comescrammed with luxury features. Aswell as improved sound deadening,SG4 trim brings leather seats,Bluetooth, a tyre pressuremonitoring system and a five-speedautomatic gearbox.

Staying inside the cabin of theShogun, its multifunction display hasreams of information available. Thisincludes a barometer and analtitude gauge, indicating that this isa vehicle that has motoring abilitystretching way beyond a farmer’sfield.

The seats are comfortable andsupportive, and the large glass areaprovides first rate views of the roador rugged ground around you. Rearseat space is colossal, and loadcapacity seems immeasurably big.

A third row of seats can be poppedup too, turning the Shogun into aseven-seater. This is convenient ifyou’re taking a group of friends intothe rough or you’ve got a posse ofchildren you need to drop off atschool.

Away from the much commentedluxury soft-roaders, heavy-dutyworkhorses such as the Shogun havecarved out a unique niche in themarket where ability anddependability matter first andforemost.

Since a price decrease in July 2013Shogun sales have gone fromstrength to strength. With its newdesign and improved specification, the Mitsubishi Shogun now offerseven better value for money.

There is a quote that goes alongthe lines of ‘If you want to savethe planet, take up gardening’. Idon’t know who said it, but it’sextremely good advice. I lovegardening and helping others toenjoy their gardens too but itnever occurred to me, untilrecently, that I was alsocontributing to the biggerpicture, that of caring of ourplanet too.

As a busy person, running mycompany, Yorkshire GardenDesigner and caring for my owngarden, I don’t stop to thinkabout much beyond theimmediate and the urgent. I’msure you do much the same. Soit came as a surprise to find thatin actual fact I was doing quite agood thing, in my own little way,to boost the health of the wholeplanet.

As a gardener, one of my primarygoals is to keep the soil in my vegpatch in good heart and by that Imean that I work quite hard tomake ensure that I put a decentamount of organic matter in thesoil every year which givesit good structure, keeps itmoist, fertile and supportsa wide range of soil bornorganisms. An easy wayto check the condition andfertility of your soil is todo the worm test. To dothis, just dig a hole in oneof your borders, about afoot down (30cm) and aswide. Get a clean piece ofplastic and put the soil

that you dig out of the hole ontoit. Once you have finished thehole, look through the excavatedsoil and count the number ofworms you find there. If youhave 8 or more, your soil is inexcellent condition. If you haveless, or even only one, you knowthat you need to get some well-rotted organic matter into it asquick as possible.

There is an obvious benefit tokeeping the soil in good heart. Itwill support healthier plantswhich are the basis of the foodchain we all rely on, as well asmaking a vital contribution tokeeping our environment cleanand viable. The less obviousbenefits of keeping our soil ingood condition is that fewer man-made chemicals are needed togrow the crops we rely on, thereis more bio-diversity and less soilblows away.

Soil erosion is a huge problemworldwide and wholepopulations have experienceddevastating famines as aconsequence. It comes about

because the soil loses its organicmatter (which happens for manyreasons) and as a result becomeslight and dry. So when the windblows, the thin soil goes with itand without any soil, it isimpossible to grow anything. You may think that this is aproblem that only countries suchas Ethiopia must deal with butyou’d be wrong. Soil erosionhappens in the UK too, and forthe same reasons as in Ethiopia.Which is where us gardeners canactually make a difference, evenif it is only in your back garden.
