Course Title: Routing and Switching

Catalog Course Description: Course describes the architecture, components, and operations of routers and

switches in a small network. Students learn how to configure a router and a

switch for basic functionality. Students will be able to configure and

troubleshoot routers and switches and resolve common issues with RIPv1,

RIPv2, single-area and multi-area OSPF, virtual LANs, and inter-VLAN routing

in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks.

Upon completion of this course, the student can:

1. Describe basic switching concepts and the operation of Cisco switches.

2. Describe enhanced switching technologies such as VLANs, VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP), Rapid Spanning

Tree Protocol (RSTP), Per VLAN Spanning Tree Protocol (PVSTP), and 802.1q.

3. Troubleshoot basic operations of a small switched network.

4. Describe the purpose, nature, and operations of a router, routing tables, and the route lookup process.

5. Configure and troubleshoot static routing and default routing.

6. Describe how VLANs create logically separate networks and how routing occurs between them.

7. Describe dynamic routing protocols, distance vector routing protocols, and link-state routing protocols.

8. Configure and troubleshoot basic operations of routers in a small routed network using Routing Information

Protocol (RIPv1 and RIPv2).

9. Configure and troubleshoot basic operations of routers in a small routed network using Configure Open Shortest

Path First (OSPF) protocol (single-area OSPF).

10. Configure and troubleshoot VLANs and inter-VLAN routing.

11. Describe the purpose and types of access control lists (ACLs).

12. Prepare, monitor, and troubleshoot ACLs for IPv4 and IPv6.

13. Describe the operations and benefits of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name

System (DNS) for IPv4 and IPv6.

14. Describe the operations and benefits of Network Address Translation (NAT).

15. Configure and troubleshoot NAT operations.

Course Structure:

This course is an online course. All work is submitted to the instructor on the assigned days of submission. Assignments have due dates and a due dates are posted on the due date link to the left of the class site. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure all assignments are submitted by their due date. If you need assistance from the instructor, please feel free to contact me via the phone, email, or in person. I will be very happy to assist you in any way I can!!

Technology/Media Component:

Student must have windows based computer to access materials online. Macintosh computers do not seem to do as well and limit the interactive components

80% Exams -Cisco Academy 20% projects – Lab and Hands on simulator

Grading Policy:

Grading Scale 90-100% -A 80-89% -B 70-79% -C 60-69% -D Below -E

Attendance Policy:

Attendance not taken as online course

Missed Exam Policy:

No assignment will be turned on after its due date has passed. All assignments are on in rotation. Doing work early is acceptable and recommended. If you fail to submit an assignment on or before the due date, please do not email the instructor asking for an exception. To maintain fairness for all students this rule must be followed

Late Assignment Policy:

No late work is accepted at any time. Early work is greatly welcome.

Withdrawal Policy:

The student can withdraw from the class up to the midterm without consent of the instructor. After midterm the student needs to have the instructor’s permission to withdraw.
