14 th Anniversary Big Nasty Hillclimb Stays Nasty By Ron Dillon Idaho’s largest motorcycle event, the 14 th annual, Toyota Big Nasty Hillclimb, lit up once again on September 15-18, 2016 and brought together its usual combination of interesting hillclimbers, machines and fans. The event was the sixth and final round of the 2016 Pole Position Raceway/Malcolm Smith Racing North American Hillclimb Association (NAHA) Championship Series, and pulled a record number of 899 entries from across the Western US and Canada. Known as “Idaho’s largest motorcycle event,” and “The place where NASCAR meets Burning Man” the Big Nasty Woodstock/Burning Man feel continued in 2016. The Orbitron, a spinning amusement ride helped keep kids entertained, and 31 local bands provided live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday night featured a gigantic fireworks show and the Big Nasty Mud Bog ran in the ditch for the first time since 2010. And of course, some of the best professional and amateur hillclimbers in the world competed for three and a half days on some really nasty hills. Title sponsor Toyota raised the bar on fun by bringing in Black Light Visuals, a really cool, temporary body dipping/painting process that spectators of all ages loved. Thank you Toyota. The weekend’s action began on Thursday afternoon with the return of the 450 semi-pro class which is the only opportunity for stock bikes to tackle the big, 500-foot hill. Nobody in the 29- rider class made it over, but Nick Baker made it to an impressive 433 feet to take the win. Friday morning, launched a whole bunch of classes with all of the stock big bikes and semi- pro classes running all day and into the night. Montana’s Ashleigh Merritt won the always tough women’s pro class, and Joe Maples won the 90cc pro mini class. For the second year in a row, Saturday had three different hills running at the same time. One featured stock minis and pit bikes, with pro qualifying running on another hill and altered bikes on yet another. The sheer number of riders pushed staff to the max and ran late in the day and pushed the 450 Pro Main and side-by-side X-Climb to Sunday morning. The 450 Pro Main was a dogfight as always. Logan Mead continued his awesome season with another class win, topping Max Simmons and Jake Anstett. Casey Curtin rode smooth and smart to win the X-Climb. Mead also took a close 700 pro win, nipping legendary pro Travis Whitlock and the Open Pro Main was won by Joe Shipman. At the very end of the weekend, the finale, The King of the Hill fired up, putting the top 5 Open finishers against the 15-foot tall, vertical Big Nasty Wall, an obstacle so intimidating that several riders refused to even attempt it. The first four riders, including last year’s winner, Austin Teyler, gave it their best shot, with Teyler suffering a nasty, scary-looking crash, (he turned out to be bruised, but okay). The final rider of the weekend, Joe Shipman, blasted right over the top winning nearly $2,000 and getting his name on the Big Nasty King of the Hill traveling trophy. Next year’s Big Nasty will be held on September 14-17, 2017, and discussions are underway on how to make Idaho’s largest motorcycle event an even bigger show in the future.

14th Anniversary Big Nasty Hillclimb Stays Nasty By Ron Dillon

Idaho’s largest motorcycle event, the 14th annual, Toyota Big Nasty Hillclimb, lit up once again on September 15-18, 2016 and brought together its usual combination of interesting hillclimbers, machines and fans.

The organizers wish to extend a hearty "helmets off" to the sponsors, donators and partners: the title sponsor, Toyota, Excel Fabrication, Pepsi, Budweiser, Outlaw Powersports, Birds of Prey Motorsports, Camping World, Allstate Insurance, Tates Rents, Woody’s Outdoor Power, Tarantula Tequila, Buck’s 4X4, Dillon Toyota Lift, Papa Johns Pizza, Rekluse, Off-Road Vixens, Idaho Banking Company, Aladdin Bail Bonds, The Double Diamond Saloon, Amsoil, Cheeky’s, Razorback Offroad, Fresh Moto Graphics, Moto Trax Snow Bikes and World Finance Auto Loans. A big thank you is also in order to the ranch owner, Tom Pence, and the small army of staff and volunteers who helped, including the CWI Big Nasty Catchers, headed by Derray Quarders. The event could also not have happened without the support of the Payette County Commissioners, Payette High School Boosters and law enforcement and New Plymouth Quick Response Unit.
