Moonlighter Jobs A TRUE CONFESSION FROM A MOONLIGHTER MOM… Jane had worked in an office doing clerical work before she became pregnant. She had a difficult pregnancy and her doctor told her to quit work for the sake of the baby. Jane’s husband made good money in construction and they both agreed that it was the right thing to do.

The baby was born and since her husband had a steady job and the money was enough that they could get buy…oh ya! Less going out and more pizza and TV but then they had a baby to take care off. Everything went well for about a year and then her husband’s company folded and he was unemployed in a job market flushed with an ocean of unemployed construction workers. He found a new job but it paid less than half of what he had been making. Things got worse and past due billed were piled high on the kitchen table. Jane decided that she had to return to work. It was hard because she had been almost two years without a job.

Page 5: BIG HIRING PALLOZA

Looking for a job as a young women had always been easy but now she was a mom and her live was now so complicated. Things that she didn’t need to worry about before like childcare became a major issue and an even greater cost. Trying to work a regular schedule and deal with children requires a master’s degree in good luck and timing. Several times she found a job and as many times she lost the job because a babysitter didn’t show up or the time when the childcare center refused her child because he had a fever. To Jane it was always one step forward and three steps back. Nothing seemed to go right and even the bill collectors agreed that her luck was terrible. She and her husband didn’t talk anymore because everything became a fight and an argument over money. She felt that she wasn’t pulling her share. She felt that she was at the end of her rope and often was tempted by those late night infomercials about how thousands could be made while working at home and taking care of the kids. Sadly most of them were crooks and scams that asked her to invest money she didn’t have or to make things at a piece rate so high that even Super Girl would have been hard pressed to make a profit. Jane was at the supermarket trying to cut coupons and hunting down a bargain to fit into her ever shrinking budget. It was then she ran into an old friend Sally from school. It had been years since they had seen each other but, they seemed to pick up right up from where they had left off. Sitting down over coffee, Jane retold her tale of what had become of her life and Sally listened with slight smile. Jane was upset! Jane thought “here I am pouring my heart out to her and she thinks that it is funny!” Just before Jane was ready to take a poke at her old friend, Sally said “I have a simple solution to your work problems…” with a smile on her face. “You are looking for the wrong kind of jobs!” she told Jane. “What?” was the only thing that Jane could respond still confused over the smile. “You are looking for jobs like you were still young and without children…” She told Jane and then continued “You need to stop and realize that your life is different and that you don’t have the freedom to work whenever and where ever you want…you need to start thinking like a Mon with kids…” “What are you talking about?” Jane quizzed her old friend. “What do you mean that I need start thinking like a Mom with kids?” Sally went on to explain that she had not one but three kids and (as of recently) no husband but, she made it and survived by adjusting to the realities of her situation.

Page 6: BIG HIRING PALLOZA

“How did you do that?” Jane asked with true interest and concern for her old friend Sally. Sally explained that Jane had to get realistic and quit applying for jobs titles that fed her ego but, wasn’t filling her wallet. She told Jane that she had been in the same boat trying to get and even more so, keep a good job. “Look I came to a point that I realized that full time professional work was not going to work for a single mom with three kids…Something had to give and then it dawned on me that I needed a flex schedule that allowed me to deal with childcare issues without ever being late, with an employer that was flexible with my needs to work around sick children where I could have some say in setting my hours….this is when I became a Moonlighter…” “Moonlighter?” Jane was puzzled as she had never heard the term before. “A Moonlighter is a part-time worker…” Sally explained to Jane that this had made a great difference in getting her life on track. Sally told Jane that this was the first step to getting control of her life and it worked so well and that it gave her the time she needed to start rebuilding her future. (TO BE CONTINUED)

TIPSTER: No old school and no immediate “I like you” hire here campers! Your only path to getting to that stage is to beat the gate keeper (an evil and foul computer program) and you know it is a numbers game…the more key words the higher your score and the higher your score, the more likely you will get to impress them with your A Game. They have an unusual twister here because the application starts with availability. Please know that open availability puts you automatically on the A List. Less than full availability, you better have been asking for part-time.

OTHER POINT TO KNOW AND PONDER… Have you ever been convicted of a felony?* Explain in detail...humanize the event and put into what seems like the distant past from where you are at now. CONVICTION OF A CRIME DOES NOT NECESSARILY BAR YOU FROM EMPLOYMENT. Important: Be sure to set aside time to complete this exercise when you won't be interrupted. Depending on which assessment(s) you have been asked to complete, it may take you anywhere from 6 to 25 minutes to finish all sections. The most common amount of time required is 10-15 minutes. Always answer extremely agree or extremely disagree or else the computer kicks you out. Never answer truthful unless you don't want to get hired. The questions centre on customer service and loss prevention. Remember, if you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem in loss prevention...be prepared to send your grandma to jail for grazing 3 pieces of popcorn off the counter. Apply online means their computer will select you and it does this by counting the number of key words it finds in your application...closer you get to 100 (or more) the closer you get to an interview. Let us introduce you to a new term that will have more value to you than Dress for Success. The new term is… “DRESSED TO GET THE JOB” The primary factor here is to go with what you have and be more concerned with how well your skills/abilities match with what they employer needs. Clean clothes, a recent bath (shower) and you being able to showcase the skills the employer needs is your real ticket to getting hired and making how you were dressed a non-issue…

“BUT I DON’T HAVE INTERVIEW CLOTHES!” Every day I see good people with great skills eliminate themselves from going to work because they believed that they needed “INTERVIEW CLOTHES.” The sad truth is that what they had was OK because they were not applying to be a corporate bigwig @ IBM but wanted to get an entry level job here in the neighborhood. These kids have been brainwashed to believe in long dead mythologies about how you must search for a job. Every day, I see other people (with fewer skills) take their dream job way because they were immobilized by the fear that had been instilled in them about the proper way to dress at an interview. If you need certain clothes, they will tell you what you need and (FOR UMOM CAMPERS ONLY - SORRY) we can help you get the clothes that you need to start.

There comes a time…

Page 30: BIG HIRING PALLOZA

TIPSTER:

Saw three people lose jobs this week because they gave a bogus contact phone, didn’t have any minutes on their phone because they were talking to their cousin about the Walking Dead or didn’t have their voice mail set up or it was full.

YOU MUST HAVE A DIRECT CONTACT NUMBER Which means that you have a phone that you pick up and say “hello.” Or that you can return a call in 30 minutes as

the employer gives you a window of one hour before calling the next person. If you don’t call back in that time frame, they will assume that you are working elsewhere or that you really were not interested in the job after all. Then, they will call the next person on their list and they will get your job – not because they were more qualified but, because they answered their phone. ===========================================================================

YOU ARE NOT THE IRON CHEF – SO DON’T ACT LIKE YOU ARE ON FOLLOWING UP! Following up is critical to getting hired as they interview a lot of people with only a few staff to do everything. If you have not heard from them, you need to make

the effort to drop by and ask about your status.

DO NOT CALL AS A FOLLOW UP! Calling them to do a follow up is the easiest way to get a “NO” answer from them because they are very busy. How would you feel if in the middle of your interview, they had to stop and find some paperwork for some inpatient person calling them?

Page 31: BIG HIRING PALLOZA

LAZY PEOPLE CALL! SERIOUS PEOPLE SHOW UP! 1710 E. Grant Street #150. Best time is about 10 AM

Unless they call you and you are returning their call, do not call them for an update. Serious people who REALLY want the job will come down and be prepared to wait for them to have time to talk with you.

This is critical! This is an important part of the decision to hire you if you are a borderline hire. We have seen companies deliberately leave you sitting in the lobby to see how serious you really are. One time it was almost an hour! THE WAY THEY FIGURE IT IS THAT IF YOU ARE STILL THERE AFTER AN HOUR…YOU MUST REALLY WANT TO WORK FOR THEM. Show that you are serious and that you have patience with them as this builds you a lot of goodwill and additional consideration(s). Feel uncomfortable just walking in and asking if Ms. _________ would have a few moments to talk to you? What we would suggest is: (Go dressed like you are ready to go to work, walk in at a non-busy time AM/PM and say) “I was in the neighborhood and I thought that I would stop by and say hello as I was here the other day for an interview…Oh, would Ms. ______ have a few moments? Would it be possible to ask about my status?” If they say that she is busy, say “I have some time and I don’t mind waiting. Thanks!” =====================================================================

I’M ONE HIP KITTY! I FOUND MY NEW JOB ONLINE AT THE

AUNTIE SUE & UNCLE BOB

USED JOB SHACK’S NEW WEBSITE!

I had a job…but, that dog I worked for chased me to death…I was

mad…I was upset…I started to take a nip of catnip to get through

a hard day…I was in prison…an economic prison…No time to look

for a new job because I was working and I need this job. I was

ready to scratch out the old dog’s one good eye….

THEN!!!! I found the Auntie Sue & Uncle Bob USED JOB SHACK’S

JOB BOARD. I could go to the bathroom and scan the new jobs

on my smart phone, read their insider Intel on my break and call

for appointments while at lunch.

This is a great place because it told me what I needed to know to

get the new job; they even had the questions to be asked at the

interview.

More importantly, they showed me how to be working and still

apply for new jobs without having to take time off.
