Started with some of the smaller big deals

• IOP – canceled the deal and subscriptions for 2012– 260 uses– Cost for packages $14,929.33– Cost per use $57.42

Another small deal

• Royal Society of Chemistry packages B and J– 360 uses– Cost for packages $30,550– Cost per use $84.86

• Worked with Chemistry Department to cancel this package.

A Bigger Deal

• LWW – Total Access Collection- In 2007 - $47,000 - In 2012 - $92,000

Can’t sustain this type of increase

Page 9: Big Deals: Where do we go from here? ALCTS Continuing Resources Section College & Research Libraries Interest Group Beth Bernhardt Electronic Resources

LWW Total Access• Looked at the usage statistics for each title• Looked at subject collections available and

titles included in them• Identified titles to subscribe to in the top 50.

– Criteria to identify titles that had a cost per use less than $17

• Identified titles with an Impact factor of 3 and over with a cost per use under $25.00

• Spreadsheet

Strategy for implementing• Used data driven information with

multiple criteria• Met with subject liaisons affected by

the cuts• Liaisons sent information to

departments for input. • Departments to make

recommendations, but library made the final decision.

A Big Deal

• Choose to cancel Sage Premier Deal• Why Sage:

– more bang of our buck• Paying Sage $154,000 • Because the way the deal was structured

our up charge was around $70,000 (they said our Subject Collections we had purchased in the past would be part of our Spend)

Page 12: Big Deals: Where do we go from here? ALCTS Continuing Resources Section College & Research Libraries Interest Group Beth Bernhardt Electronic Resources

Strategy for Implementing Cuts

• Identified out of the top 100 titles, most titles clustered around 4 subject collections.

• These 4 subject collections were purchased.• Then to keep our promise to cut 50% of cost

we chose the $15,300 worth of titles from the top used journals

• Had meetings with the subject liaisons.• Departments were told about cuts and had a

chance to swap titles out if they wanted.

Spreadsheet

The deals we cut all came down to money

• Both RSC and IOP- Costs per use too high and titles were expensive

• LWW – Cost for the collection doubled in 5 years.

• Sage – The way they setup the deal we were able to save the most money by cutting them.

Next

• Looking at all other big deals in the first months of 2012.

• Analyzing usage for all big deals.• We will use usage data and Impact factors

to make decisions.• Look at costs per use.• See what Subject Collections are available• See what Pay Per View options might

work
