31 Making Sense In Journalism Through Big Data By Taylor’s University
About 200 students participated in the Making Sense of
Journalism through Big Data forum at Taylor’s University
Lakeside Campus on the 7th May.
Ahmed Kamal, founder of Politweet, talked about data
journalism. He spoke about how he retrieved data from
Twitter updates during Bersih 3.0 rally.
Dr. Wong Chin Huat, who is a political activist, explained
how data journalism can help to investigate the country’s
political activities.
The next speaker was Irene Jay Liu, a reporter from
Thomson Reuters who is based in Hong Kong. “If you want
a career in media, you have to deal with data
journalism,” she said. The final speaker was Professor
Zaharom Nain, who is a lecturer at the University of
Nottingham Malaysia Campus.
32 Roundtable on Big Data Analytics With Govt. Officials (Closed-Door)
By MDeC-IBM
A Roundtable Discussion was organized by MDeC in
collaboration with IBM Malaysia with the purpose of
creating awareness among government officials on the
impact of Big Data in the public sector. The theme was Big
Data Analytics, a blue print for success. The event was
chaired by Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, CEO of MDeC, and was
attended by a total of 40 representatives from 15 different
government ministries and agencies.
Mr. Amish Patel gave a presentation on Big Data, which
covered topics such as “Developing the National Big Data
Framework”, “Open Data.gov” and public sector BDA
implementation case studies in other countries.
The Roundtable discussion provided a better insight and
understanding among government officials on the potential
and benefits of Big Data to the public sector and how IBM
can contribute to the building of the National Big Data
Framework.
33 Big Data Info Retrieval And Representation In Telcos By TM R&D
TM Research & Development (TM R&D) organized the 5th
Big Data in Telecommunication in conjunction with Big
Data Week Kuala Lumpur 2014.
Big Data Analytics in Malaysia is emerging as datasets are
becoming so large and complex that it becomes difficult
to process using conventional database management
tools or traditional data processing applications. Thus,
TM R&D has taken this challenge to lead the big data
trend in Malaysia.
The objective of this gathering was to provide exposure
and detailed explanation on Big Data technology from a
telco’s viewpoint and to support the Big Data Week.
The event saw five key speakers share their insights on
respective expertise related to the Big Data Information
Retrieval and Representation in the Telco Domain
theme.
34 Large-Scale File Systems For Big Data Analytics By SNIA
In this event, the topics covered were:
1) Massive scale file system for Big Data Analytics - SNIA Malaysia
2) Converged systems/Software Defined Storage for Big Data - Nutanix
3) Object filesystem - HDS
The crowd found the topics revolving around storage interesting because it was never presented the way it
should be appreciated. Based on the interactive conversations, there is much interest leading towards
requirements and advisory services. And this Big Data Week is a good platform to inject many opportunities
toward the storage networking industry.
