Strategy focus: drawing inferences

Skills that can be addressed: • Recognizing patterns in reading• Using picture cues to infer meaning of text

Curriculum links: Earth science

Genre: a story with a predictable structureand patterned language

Word count: 28

Ideas for Guided Reading

Book Introduction: Before Reading • Look at the front and back cover together, reading the text on the back

cover to the children. Ask the children to “draw an inference” of what they think this book might be about. Discuss students’ responses, and ask students to explain their thinking behind their inference.

• Have students take a picture-walk through the book. As they browse ask them to try to “draw an inference” about how ladybug is feeling. Students should infer that ladybug is unhappy throughout the book until the very end. Tell the students that they are going to read the book to find out why.

Reading and responding

• Read the sentence together on p. 2. Ask the children to look at the picture on p. 3 and draw an inference about the characters and how they are feeling. Have students give their thinking behind their inference.

• Have students independently read pp. 4 and 5. Help them focus their reading by saying, “As you read, draw an inference about how ladybug’s feelings are changing and why you think this is happening.”

• Have students continue to read pp. 6–11. Help them focus their reading by saying, “As you read, draw inferences of what you think is happening in the story.” Follow the reading with a discussion, when the children can share their inferences and the thinking behind their inferences.

• Before continuing to read, stop and have students make a prediction of what they think will happen next.

• Have students read pp. 12–13 and infer why they think ladybug is happy. Have students share their thinking.

Returning to the book

• Have students reread the book.

• Turn to pp. 14 and 15, and ask students to use the strategy of inferencing to give a summary of the story.

Learning extension – art and nature:

• Ask children to make a poster showing the ladybug’s journey.

• Find out more about minibeasts. (Children could draw minibeasts that have patterns on them, or hold a nature hunt in the playground.)

Eachbookfeaturesatargetedsmallgroup/guidedreadinglessonplanfocusedonacomprehensionstrategy.
