Baby-proofing, from bed, bath and beyondYour babys going to get

a bump or two, despite your best efforts to head off an accident. Your job is to make sure the accident isnt serious. These ideas, from Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta, will help you baby-proof your home.

AnywherenDont walk away from potential poisons; if youre using laundry detergent, bleach, floor cleaners or other products, make sure theyre stored before you leave even for an instant.n Keep cleaners in any room on a high shelf and locked up. n Keep alcohol out of reach.n Be aware of where you place your purse so babys little hands cant find cigarettes, cosmetics, matches or other fascinating dangers. n Some plants can be poisonous; keep them away from baby.

nMake sure cords on blinds and drapes are out of reach. nCover unused electrical outlets and unplug cords you arent using and put them away.nUse safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs.nCheck for lead paint, if your home was built before 1978; high lead levels can cause brain damage.n Install fire and carbon monoxide detection alarms to alert you in an emergency.

Bathroomn Keep medicines and vitamins in child-resistant containers, out of reach and locked up.n Store cosmetics, colognes and mouth washes where baby cant reach.n Lower the temperature in your home water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, to prevent accidental scalding.n Keep curling irons, hairdryers and heated appliances and their cords out of reach and away from the sink or tub.

BedroomnMake sure the crib mattress is firm and flat; remove comforters or toys and soft products that might cause suffocation.n Remove hood and neck strings from childrens clothing, and dont let them wear a necklace, scarf or anything around their neck that could get caught and pose a strangling hazard.

KitchennCook on the back burners of the stove.n Keep food away from the edges of counters or tables.n Test microwaved food to make sure its not too hot.

The Right Camp for Your Child

nHow long has the camp been operating? Who manages the camp and what are his qualifications?

nHow is the staff screened and chosen?

nIs there a medical person on staff? What happens if theres an emergency?

nWhat is the ratio of staff to campers? A 1:5 ratio is recommended for ages 4-5, 1:6 for ages 6-8, 1:8 for ages 9-14 and 1:10 for ages 15-17.

nHow is security maintained at the camp?

    nHow many campers per session?

nIs the camp co-ed or single sex?

nWhat is a typical days schedule?

nHow much free time do kids have and how closely are they supervised?

Overnight camps have themes to suit any taste, from general interest and nature camps to those specializing in computers, art, language, horseback riding, theater or sports, and from secular to religion-based experiences. Once youve determined the type of camp your child wants, here are other factors to consider.

    nHow are discipline problems handled?

nIf a child becomes homesick, whats the camps policy on calling parents?

nWhat does a weeks menu look like, and how does the camp handle food allergies or other dietary needs?

nHow much does the camp cost andis financial assistance available?

nIf special equipment or clothing is required, are those an extra cost or included in the camp fee?

nWho can tell you about their childs experience at this camp? Ask the camp for references and call or email the parents.

The American Camp Association can do some of the work for you. The ACA has accredited about 2,400 camps, checking such areas as food service, transportation, health care, emergency training and staff qualifications, and making sure the camps meet standards set by the industry. To find an accredited camp, see acacamps.org/parents.

Any parent will tell you infant car seats are a hassle but one well worth it when you consider that half of all children ages 1-14 who die in vehicle crashes either werent in a car seat or werent wearing a seat belt.

How do you know if your childs seat is installed correctly? Follow these tips from Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta, then make an appointment for a free inspection at a child safety seat fitting location near you, often a fire station or health department. Youll find locations at gahighwaysafety.org/procamp.html and more information on car seat use at choa.org (search for auto safety).

    Car Seats Save Little Lives

Car seatsnChildren should ride in a rear-facing seat until age 2, or until they exceed the height or weight limit for the rear-facing car seat. Read installation instructions carefully. Safety seat harness straps should be snug and you shouldnt use padding under or behind your infant in the car seat. At age 2, or when your child has outgrown the rear-facing seat, then you can use a forward-facing seat.

n A LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) for vehicles made after Sept. 1, 2002, makes car seat installation easier. LATCH and seat belt installation are comparable as far as safety, but make sure you know how to use the LATCH system.

Booster seatsnGeorgia changed its booster seat law, effective July 1, 2011. Children under age 8 who weigh less than 40 pounds and are shorter than 4 feet, 9 inches, must use a booster seat to keep their lap and shoulder harness in the right position, when riding in an auto, van or pickup truck. Children under age 8 who weigh at least 40 pounds and are 4'9" may use a lap and shoulder belt without the seat, or a lap belt if the vehicle is not equipped with lap and shoulder belts. Booster seats come in two varieties: a Backless BPB (belt-positioning booster) or a High-back BPB. Backless BPBs must be used on a vehicle seat with a built-in or adjustable head restraint. High-back BPBs should be used in vehicles with no head restraints.

Safety beltsn Say goodbye to the booster seat when your child can keep his back against the vehicle seat and his knees will bend over the seat edge, when his feet will rest flat on the floor or when the lap belt is low and snug across his upper thighs and the shoulder belt crosses the center of his chest and collarbone. Then make sure he buckles his seat belt before the vehicle moves.

Take the Bite Out of Dental Care

nStart early. Wean your child from a bottle by age 1 toddlers who use bottles longer to drink milk or juice are more likely to get tooth decay.

nStart cleaning. As soon as teeth start to come in, wipe down gums and teeth after feedings with a soft, wet cloth.

nStart a conversation. Ask for recommendations on pediatric dentists, or do your own research, checking websites and credentials of pediatric dentists near you and visiting their office. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry says your child should see a pediatric dentist before age 1. Many dentists dont charge for your childs first visit.

nStart brushing. When teeth appear on the top and bottom, get a brush with a small head designed for little ones, and clean teeth while the child is lying down. If you use toothpaste, keep it the size of a pea.

nStart the clock. When your child is able to stand to brush, youll need to brush his teeth for at least two minutes.

nStart supervising. Let your child take over the brushing when his motor skills are good, usually around age 6, but make sure he brushes at least two minutes. Many childrens toothbrushes have lights that glow or music that plays for the proper amount of time, or put on a CD thats two minutes long.

nStart flossing. Youll have to do it at first, but your child can learn over time.

nStart his life cavity-free. Most dentists recommend sealants on the childs first teeth to prevent cavities, and on his permanent teeth when they start to come in. Sealants can prevent 90 percent of cavities. Getting dental cleanings and checkups every six months also will keep his teeth and gums healthy. For more information on dental health, see the Georgia Academy of Pediatric Dentistrys website at gaapd.org.

A dental drill isnt something to be afraid of, but dont expect your child to believe that when hes sitting in a dentists chair and hears that high-pitched whine. You can make sure that sound isnt necessary in his young life. Heres what pediatric dentists recommend:

The rules of the road have changed for teens looking to get that all important badge of independence, a Class D drivers license that allows them to leave the chauffeur behind. You and your teen will need to start sooner and work harder to get that license by 16.

Drive and study to get that D

n Study for the test. Start by getting and learning the Georgia Drivers Manual.

nGet a learners permit. Teens must hold a learners permit for one year and one day to be eligible for a Class D license at 16. Your teen can apply for one at age 15, with proof of age (birth certificate or other ID), a valid Social Security number and a Certificate of Attendance notarized by his school or proof of being home-schooled. If younger than 18 and not attending school, he must have a GED or high school diploma or be enrolled in college. (Students who drop out of school or commit a traffic infraction may have their permit revoked.)

n Take him for testing. Your teen must pass a vision test and an exam on road rules and road signs, based on the Georgia Drivers Manual, to get a learners permit. The $10 permit is valid for 24 months and allows your teen to drive with a licensed driver over age 21 in the front seat.

n Teach him yourself. Have your teen do an online course with a DDS-approved

school, then complete the Parent Teen Driving Guide with him before he applies for a license.

nCheck into drivers education. Make sure the school is approved by the Georgia Department of Driver Services. Most schools provide 30 hours of classroom instruction and another six hours of behind-the-wheel training. Some offer online instruction. After that, you and your teen will need an additional 40 hours of driving time together, six of them at night, before he can apply for a license. Your insurance company likely will give you a discount if your child completes a drivers ed course.

n Let him wait until age 17. If he cant complete a drivers ed course in a classroom or online, hell have to wait for a license.

nGet all the facts. The Department of Driver Services has complete information at dds.ga.gov and gateendrivereducation.dds.ga.gov.

Preventionn Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on all floors of your home and make sure batteries are replaced regularly. Replace alarms every 10 years.nGet your furnace inspected annually by a service professional and make sure you change filters regularly.nMake sure space heaters are three feet from anything that could catch fire, and turn them off at night.nGet your fireplace inspected annually, and use a screen to protect from sparks.nDont overload electrical outlets or run extension cords under rugs or behind heaters; replace frayed cords.n Keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, and stay in the kitchen when youre cooking.n Stop a grease fire by putting a lid on the pot; dousing the fire with water will make it spread.n Teach your children that matches and lighters are not toys and they shouldnt be used when you arent present. Put them out of reach.

Fire Safety for Families PreparingnCome up with an escape route for your family, from each room in your home, and practice the routes. n Buy chain ladders for upstairs rooms and practice using them. n If young children or elderly family members might need help escaping, decide who will assist them.n Agree on a meeting place outside the house so youll know everyone is safe.

Getting outn If fire strikes, get out first, then call 911 from a neighbors house or cell phone. nCheck doors for heat before opening them. You might need to leave by a window instead.n If leaving by a door, crawl below the smoke to exit. If the door is hot, put a sheet under it to seal out smoke, then use the window to escape. If you cant open the window, break it with a heavy object.nDont waste time trying to save valuables. You and your family might have less than a minute to escape and no treasure is worth anyones life.

Simple Savings StrategiesMost people would agree that theyd like to save money on regular

expenses. However, few realize how easy it is to cut pennies here and there which can add up to big bucks over the course of a year.

n Clip coupons. The best buys are coupons used on sale items which might make it worthwhile to stock up. Many stores print coupons on the back of their receipts. But remember, its only a savings if youll actually use the items.nBuy store brands. On goods where youll notice the difference in quality, go ahead and stick to the brand you love. When it comes to generic foodstuffs, theres no reason to shell out extra for the brand name. nHome brew. Trading that daily $1.70 gourmet cup of java for pennies-per-cup home brew could save more than $8 a week. Thats about $400 a year.nEat in, not out. Make the time to plan a menu for the next two weeks, including a night

or two for leftovers. Make a grocery list at the same time, then follow through and actually buy whats on your list.nEconomical pampering. Schedule hair appointments every eight weeks instead of every six. Dont forget to check local beauty schools; student cosmetologists and estheticians offer discounted services. Be on the lookout for online deals.n Pre-owned goods. Consignment stores and sales, yard sales and auction sites like eBay are perfect for bargain hunters. nBabysitting solution. Swap childcare with another family. Your kids will enjoy having playmates for the evening while you and your spouse get some time off.

Atlanta may be one of the countrys largest urban centers but it still is home to miles and miles of trails for experienced as well as novice hikers. Here are some places to get away from it all as well as some tips for those of you donning your first pair of hiking boots.

Guide for First-time HikersHere are a few tips to make your hikes more enjoyable.

nStay hydrated! This is perhaps the most important tip. You need to bring plenty of water with you, and make sure to have your young hikers drink it continuously throughout the hike.

nSunscreen is a must. Lather it on you and your children before leaving the house, and make sure to reapply generously throughout the day, even if it is not super sunny.

nWear appropriate gear. If you have never hiked before and are planning on wearing new shoes or clothes, break them in before the big day. New shoes

n Start with short, easy hikes. You dont want to get too far down a trail only to realize that your kids are too tired to make it back. Look at the Internet or buy a hiking book beforehand so you can check the distance and difficulty level of each trail you want to try.

and clothes can cause blisters and other skin irritations that will leave your children whining the entire way.

n Layers, layers, layers. Start your hike fairly early in the day when the weather may be cooler. However, as the day goes on and the temperature rises, you will want to be able to shed extra clothing so no one gets overheated.

nKeep it fun. If your children become bored with the hike, try to play games along the way or find a playground where they can recharge. You can also pack a picnic, and stop for lunch halfway through to make the hike not seem so long.

Make Reading a HabitHere are some suggestions from Reading Is Fundamental (RIF):

n Learn more about your childs interests and suggest books, magazines and articles that relate to those topics.

n Read books with your children! Children of any age can appreciate being read to.

n Be a good role model let your children see you reading.

n Take your children to the library regularly. Explore the childrens section together. Ask a librarian to suggest books and magazines your children might enjoy.

n Encourage older children to read to their younger brothers and sisters.Older children enjoy showing off their skills to an admiring audience.

n Set aside a regular time for reading in your family, independent of schoolwork. As little as 10 minutes of free reading a day can help improve your childs skills and habits.

n Read aloud to your child, especially one who is discouraged by his or her own poor reading skills. The pleasure of listening to you read, rather than struggling alone, may restore your childs enthusiasm for books and reading.

n Encourage your child to read aloud to you an exciting passage in a book, an interesting tidbit in the newspaper, or a joke in a joke book. When children read aloud, dont feel they have to get every word right.

n On gift-giving occasions, give books and magazines based on your childs current interests.

n Set aside a special place for children to keep their own books.

n Offer other special incentives to encourage your childs reading. Allow your child to stay up an extra 15 minutes to finish a chapter.
