As I see it...Living in a community of artists has its perks. Artists may seek reclusiveness for a time to focus solely on their art but they also return to the community to seek approval, connections, and influence. For me, having Virginia Hall as my artist mentor in Tubac is a vital part of my artistic development. A

mentor can be defined as someone who helps you with your career, specific work projects, or general life advice out of the goodness of their heart. However, similar to Hall’s artistic style, it is by omission that makes her advise and opinion more elusive. Her silence, her presence, and her eloquence in art are enough for me to delve into her world and provide me with sufficient stimuli to pursue the unknown. Well versed in the creative process, she reinforces the style and ideas that I am exploring.

Born and educated in Michigan, at a time when modern art was at its infancy, Hall was a natural at abstraction. Early on, while working on her Masters in Fine Arts, her academic drawings showed an affinity to an economy of line and shape, where minute details and intricacies were present in areas where she would emphasize the obvious but left certain areas to be desired. What makes her work more attractive is her approach to the illusion of three-dimensional space. Hall’s treatment of space is not just a separation of shapes but more of a continuum, joining and connecting as a total object as in the paradox of form is emptiness and emptiness no other than form. Unlike realism which focuses on details of a three-dimensional object onto a flat surface, abstract art has made this space free and open, more and more shallow, and flatness became the objective. The eye may have trouble locating meaning but that’s the beauty of modern art, it challenges us to engage and think and makes the spectator part of the art experience. One fallacy is the tendency to assume that representational art is far superior and recognizable images are always preferable. She maintains that the big piece of her motivation to be “unpainterly” is the currency between science and art. During the same period when cubism was paving the way for modernism, science was exploring the Black Hole. Hall was able to produce extensively within a community of realistic painters, a commercial challenge indeed, and her works attracted collectors and clients that are well informed.

Virginia Hall is preparing for a retrospective, an art exhibit showing an entire oeuvre and representative examples of her life’s work. This is an opportunity to view her artistic development beginning with nude studio drawings, pen and ink renderings of missions.

Change is a part of life. What matters is how we approach change.

I decided that the above introductory comment was appropriate because TCA is embarking on some significant change.

Marty Schuyler informed us that she intended to retire from her position as Chair of our Performing Arts program after the current season. Marty wanted to leave at a time when she saw that everything was moving in the right direction. Marty has given selflessly to TCA for over 25 years as a volunteer, committee member and Board member to name only a few of her many roles here. She has chaired the Performing Arts Committee and series for over 10 years. Well, I guess nothing lasts forever no matter how hard you wish it would. It is with fond appreciation we say “Thank You” to Marty with hopes that she will remain involved in TCA for many years to come.

The analysis of any situation requires consideration of a new range of possibilities. We were also sorry to see Paula Kim, our Education Coordinator, leave for Chicago right before the holiday season. Paula had done an amazing job with the Summer Arts program, helped to start the new ART STARTS program as well as coordinated the adult workshops and assisted with grant writing. We believe the ability to adjust to change is a strength and so with the full backing of a strong and committed Board, we immediate looked at the possibility of expanding the education and programming responsibilities to a full-time position while looking at all our staffing.

We are very excited to be collaborating with a number of community organizations for the upcoming ‘Poetry of the Wild” program which was a natural way to expand upon the Arte de Avian exhibition and Garden Tour this spring. Stay tuned in March for more information about transitions, and positive moves ahead for TCA. Embrace Change!

gifts, jewelry, clothing accessories and novelties. Artists include Donna Thoreson, Nancy Child, Trudy Baker, Steve Hickman, Joan Cawthorn, Betty McDonald, Carol Swiggett, Linda Larriva, Irene Miller, Barb Quigley and Judy Chisholm.

The public is invited to join the Simon/Steinway Gallery in Tucson for a community presentation by Tubac’s Ann Groves. Ann speaks about her legendary father, Hal Empie (1909-2002). Her talk is widely popular as it covers Arizona history of the Empie family in the state since 1886, her father’s art career with works selling over 85 years. His famous Empie Kartoon Kard Postcards, still on the market for 75 years, and his pharmacy career as the youngest licensed pharmacist in the state’s history. You are invited to join Simon/Steinway at 3001 E. Skyline Drive, Suite 117, Tucson on Thursday, March 5th from 4 to 6pm. There is no charge to attend, however seating reservations are required. Call 520-325-9797.

The entire community is

working together to celebrate birding this spring. Participating organizations include Tubac Center of the Arts with our Arte de Avian exhibit, The Anza Trail Coalition, Tubac Presidio State Park, Tumacacori

National Historic Park, Tubac Golf Resort and many local galleries and businesses.

Tubac Center of the Arts received over 250 entries for the national juried exhibit of bird themed art opening on March 13th. As part of the “Poetry of the Wild” program, creative poetry boxes will be installed along the Anza Trail between the Presidio and the Tumacacori Mission and in locations in the village. Visitors will have an opportunity to explore the trail, discover the boxes, read the poems and, if they wish, leave comments in the public journals that are part of

each box. This project serves as a catalyst for exploring our village, the Anza Trail and seeing how art and poetry come together in this temporary public art installation. Donated boxes will return to TCA in April and be auctioned on April 18th, the day of the 2015 Garden Tour. Auction proceeds will benefit both TCA and The Anza Trail Coalition.

Presentations about birds and birding will be at the Presidio State Park and the Tumacacori Mission will sponsor bird walks along the trail on weekends in March and April. The Tubac Golf Resort will offer a special “birding” package for the resort as will other local B&Bs.

Mark your calendar for March 7th and join in the inaugural “Poetry Walk” with Artist in Residence, Ana Flores, sculptor from Rhode Island and founder of the Poetry of the Wild project.

Art a la CarteDinner with Artists

Featured artists Fred Collins, Cynthia Wearden and David Voisard spoke to a sold out audience at the Tubac Golf

Resort Chapel on January 22nd. Those attending enjoyed cocktails, a delicious dinner and an opportunity to hear career highlights and see numerous examples of art from all three

artists. Patty Nigbur commented, “This was the most enjoyable evening I ever remember spending here in Tubac”.

Thanks go to these three talented artists who made this evening so special. The Benchmark Foundation underwrites this event with proceeds benefiting those future artists attending the Summer Arts program for youth.
