before serious problems arise

• high phosphorus levels increase algae and weed growth

Phosphorus and Secchi Depth Results

Phosphorus and Secchi Depth testing is done from one location in the centre of the lake and results are available in the spring of the following year. Phosphorus levels exceeding 20 parts per billion (ppb) are of concern since at that point algae growth accelerates. We had some particularly high results in 2016. This may have been due to the hot summer, but we can all do our part to reduce phosphorus in the lake. Prevention of algae blooms, particularly blue-green algae, is critical if we are to have safe water for drinking and swimming. A wide variety of factors are linked to the formation of blooms, but the most significant ones are increased nutrient input to lakes, and a number of specific meteorological conditions such as high water temperature, low rainfall/precipitation and reduced wind speeds.

Shoreline Gardens Project

Shoreline Workshop

Fifty-two people attended the Shoreline Gardens Workshop at the Buckhorn Community Centre led by. Leora Berman, The Land Between. The RBC Blue Water Project funded the workshop and the BBLCA made a donation to TLB.

Native Plant Starter Kit Distribution

Native Plant Starter Kits were distributed to workshop participants. We obtained a grant from BEAN – Biodiversity and Education Network to pay for 12 of the 37 starter kits. The BBLCA donated 25 starter kits.

Demonstration Site

Congratulations to Sue Flanagan who won our draw for the demonstration site.

Leora Berman, The Land Between, designed the demonstration site, ordered the plants and coordinated the planting. A big thank you to our volunteers who came out to help with the planting, to John Boyce for picking up and delivering the plants and to Sue & Paul Flanagan for providing lunch for everyone. It was a beautiful day for planting.

This project was funded by the RBC Blue Water Project.
