WWW.MIXMAG.NET 048 JUNE 2008 Clubland’s firecest get-downs THE BIG 3 Get up, get out THE BIG 3 DAVIDE BOZZETTI MODA @ THE ENGINE SHED, LINCOLN “FROM NOW ON WE’RE ALL ON RADIO 1, SO START MAKING SOME NOISE!” IN AN UPSTAIRS bar an excited bloke darts across the floor, jumps in the air and kicks his mate up the behind. Thankfully, their embrace affirms this is not the premature return of Gladiators, but the instinctive and natural reaction of Moda’s clubbers. They’ve swapped the confines of The Cell – their 400-capacity former home – to run wild across the vast open plains of spanking new Lincoln venue The Engine Shed. In fact, splice together a rock stage, a fat warehouse space and a life-sized train set, and you can picture this fantastic area, with wagon trains rattling past and the city’s waterways lapping its edge. Inside, a sell out crowd of Lincoln students, locals and ravers from Sheffield, Nottingham and the surrounding towns pour onto the huge dancefloor. Bathed with spitting green lasers and Moda artwork, the walls are fringed with red leather benches and pictures of steam trains. The music thumps, bouncing from an immense Funktion One soundsystem that proves as crisp and loud as one of Fatboy’s freshly ironed Hawaiians. “In fact,” grins Moda regular Jim Cormack, “there’s nothing like it in Lincolnshire and, thanks too to all the students, it attracts a certain Electro train Raving on the rails in Lincoln’s Train Shed MODA @ THE CELL L LL ELL CEL CE E C HE C HE TH @ TH @ T @ A @ DA @ DA ODA OD MO MO M M Electro and jackin’ house funfest 16/5 5 /5 6/5 16/ 1 The Black Ghosts @ The Cell, l, ell, Cell, Ce he C The The @ Th s @ ts @ osts host Gho Gh k G ack lack Bla e Bl he B The Th T Lincoln n oln coln nco Linc Lin L 20/6 /6 0/6 20/ 20 2 Lee Mortimer @ The Cell, Lincoln ln oln ncol inco Lin l, Li ell, L Cell e Ce he C The @ Th @ T r @ er @ mer time rtim orti Mor e Mo ee M Lee Le L 07773 811419 9 19 419 141 114 811 3 81 73 8 773 777 077 07 www.thisismoda.co o co a.co da. oda mod smo sism hisis this w.th w.t ww www ww w m m m m kind of people. Alexis waxes lyrical over the start of his quirksome house- hop set, including a dubbed out mix of the Human League’s ‘Don’t You Want Me’ and an outrageous Lionel Richie finale. Within moments, as jeans, tees, shades and sequins get frenzied, Kissy (who picked DJ/promoters Jaymo and Andy George as his favourite fresh talent for tonight’s live Essential Mix recording) excitedly rushes into the revellers, blows his trademark klaxon and loud hails “from now on, we’re all on Radio 1, so start making some noise!” The place goes off the rails. An essential mix in more ways than one then, this is big-budget, risk- taking stuff for the Moda crew, whose adolescent club night – only 18 months old – has already welcomed Switch and The Mystery Jets to this quaint neighbourhood – and like a friendly kick up the behind, they’re hitting the spot. “FROM NOW ON WE’RE ALL ON RADIO 1, SO START MAKING SOME NOISE!”

IN AN UPSTAIRS bar an excited bloke darts across the floor, jumps in the air and kicks his mate up the behind.
