While others fall out of favor, the doctors are still in.
In its 13th season, Grey’s Anat-omy stands as ABC’s most-watched scripted series, which is
a devastating com-ment on ABC’s new-series development,but also a testamentto Grey’s ratings sta-bility and artisticconsistency. And
this long-running doctor show isnot just doing well comparedwith other ABC series. It hasmore viewers than every NBCdrama except This is Us and everyFox scripted series but Empire. And among those younger view-ers prized by advertisers, Grey’sranks in the Top 10 of all scriptedseries, broadcast and cable.
So how is that Grey’s thriveswhile its once red-hot Thursdaycompanion Scandal, also from ex-ecutive producer Shonda Rhimes, has fallen sharply behind? (Bothwere renewed for new seasonsthis month.) Well, in part, whatScandal has slammed into is theinherent danger of allowing“shocking” and “crazy” to be-come a show’s watchwords. Drawan audience in on crazy, and youronly option is to become evermore crazy — which means by
the time your gay vice-presiden-tial candidate is imprisoned forconspiring with his former SecretService lover to kill the president-elect, you’ve hit the point of di-minishing returns.
Grey’s, of course, also has itsshare of “OMG Moments,” to usethe childish tag ABC attaches to ashow that deserves better. Butwhere Scandal hinges on these“go big or go home” swings, Grey’suses them more sparingly. Sur-prising, sometimes outrageousmedical twists are one of theshow’s hooks, but in essence,Grey’s remains a character drama— and those characters, and fans’
affectionfor them, have alwaysbeen thereal keys tothe show’ssuccess.
Certainly, there are thosewho love Scan-dal’s “gladia-tors,” but theyoccupy a fanta-sy Washington, and fantasiestend to wear thin with time.
Because Grey’s is not as com-mitted to season-long story arcsas Scandal, it’s also able to shift
those characters and their plotsaround more easily. You don’t likeAlex’s threat-of-jail suspension? In this week’s episode (Thursday,8 ET/PT), he returns to the hospi-tal. You don’t like Marika Dom-inczyk’s Eliza Minnick? Thatsame episode makes her moresympathetic. But if you hateScandal’s election story? Too bad;you’re stuck with it all season.
And stuck in the world ofpolitics, which is the oth-
er — and perhaps mostimportant — differ-
ence between thetwo shows. Grey’shospital settingautomatically givesit access to life-and-death stakes in
an arena wherenew discoveries and
procedures continual-ly provide new twists onolder stories. Scandaloften plays like a crimeshow set in the politicalarena, one that substi-tutes melodrama forreal-world stakes —
and one that is now asking a wea-ry nation to re-fight a presidentialelection. If you need a reason whypeople are opting out, that onewill do.
