'l'HE QUESTION AT ISSUE.

MR. E LLIOT STO CKhas just publi shed-price one ' shilling-" An Essay for the Un learned," by the Rev. Wi lliam Ker,M.A., entit led, " Immorta lity; Whence? and for Whom ? i.,

With some of Mr. Ker's positions we do not agree, but weheartily commend this cheap volume as a fine argument forthose essential truths which we wish to see univers allyaccepted -the entire mortality of man by nature, and eternallife only in Christ. The fol lowing passages from ¥r . Ker' sbook w ill be read with pleasure :-

The real qu estion at issue is this :-" Was th e soul formedor cre ated immortal? W as it so created t hat it cannot die,or ce ase to be , or be destroyed? W e read of the ' electangels ' (1 Tim , v. 21), and of those who shall be 'countedworthy' to attain the' resurre ction from the dead,' and whoshall be 'equ al to th e angels,'· that they 'cannot die '

(Luke xx. 35, 36), liter ally 'are not able to die,' were itpossible they should desire it. Is this the c ase with allmen , of nece ssity, and by nature? "

This i s the question , to which the majority of Christianadvocat es emphatica lly an swer Yes ; to which we as de-cidedly answer No; a nd upon which we now proceed, as thelegal term goes, to "join issue "-an i ssue, it will beadmitted, as fa r surpassing in import ance and interest anycause that ever was litigated in any court of human equity,as the heaven is higher than the earth , or eternity exceed stime .

9 8 THE BIBLE STANDARD .

Such th en is the quest ion in dispute; and as in courts ofequity the suprem e authority in all cases is the Act ofParliament, so we say that in this case the sole and supremeauthority to which appeal c an be admitted i s the writt enlaw, or Word of God.

God alone who created it can know what the soul i s, or

with what intention He gave it being ; and from Him onlycan we l earn its future destiny. Now God has spok en, aswe shall see, clearly and decisively upon this subject, andour plain duty is, in simplicity and sincerity of heart, toaccept His teaching.

We have nothing whatever to do with the reasonings ofphilosophers, ancient or modern; s ave indeed to take goodheed to the inspired caution (Col. ii , 8), "Beware lest anyman spoil " (rob or plunder) (C you through philosoph y andvain deceit. " We have only in this as in every similar caseto inqui re" What saith the Lord ?" and that once clearlyascertained our plain path is submission, no matter to what

extent the knowledge thus acquired may disturb our pre-conceived opinions.

r If any of my readers, therefore, should unhappily dissentfrom this fund amental principle, here I much grieve to saywe mu st part company. For where a common ground ofappeal as decisive authority is wanting , discussion is worsethan usele ss, and can lead to nothing but perple xity andbitterness.

The que stion now at issue is not one of specul ation ', but ofScripture interpretation only, and to that our discu ssionshall be as rigidly as possible confined.

1. In the first place then we maintain that the truedoctrine of " Immortality " is that and that only which isstated by St . Paul, and which forms ;the heading of thischapter :-" The gift of God is eternal life , through Jesu sChri st our Lord " (Rom. vi. 23).

" Life" i s here put in opposition to "Death" in theformer clau se-Cl For the w ages of sin is de ath; but thegift of God i s eternal life," etc. Now the common and well-understood m eanin g of "lif e" (as appli ed to man) isconsc iou s being; and" death" being its opposite should there-ore mean the loss 01' extinctio n oj c onscious being. In fact, you at once perc eive that the k ey words of this controversy

are" Lif e" and "Death ;" and wer e these word s allowedto hold their ordin ary si gnifi cation the controv ersy, as youwill s oon p erceive, would be very speedily decided .

And why now , let me ask you, dear reader , why shouldlhey not be tak en in their usual s ense? Why should weaccept th em naturally in all hum an docum ents-legal,politi cal, historic al, dome stic-and in th at Sacred Bookcnly, in which accuracy of compreh ension conc erns us themost deeply, endeavou r to for ce upon them a non -natur al

meaning ? Does not this seem to you a strange thin g? aviolation of common sense as well as of the ordinary rule sof int erpret ation? Yet, as you will see , it is persistentlypracti sed by the advocat es of the popul ar cre ed; 1 and by noother means could that cre ed be maintain ed.

This forcing of a non-natural m eaning on ordinar y words

will appear to you the more unreasonable, when you re -member ho w emph atically we are warn ed that we mustreceive the "kingdom of heaven as little children" (Matt.xviii. 3 ) ; and e xhorted "as newborn b abes" to "de sirethe sinc ere" (unadulterated ) " milk of the word " (1 Pe ter ii.2). A little child would never conceiv e of Life as anythingbnt Life ; or of D eath but the los s or extinction of Lif e.

Little suit able to a childlike mind ( and the more aChri stian grows in grace, the mor e childlike he b ecome s) isthat special pleading which puts lif e for death and death forlife; and which makes such e xpressions as to perish, to bedestroyed, to kill with death , to slay, to be con sumed and

burnt up with fire-as chaff , or thorns, or stubble-tosignify being pr eserved aliv e for ever in torment!

It is very true that life and death are sometimes us ed in afigurative sense: ItS for e xample when St. P aul sa ys of thewanton widow, "She that liveth in pleasure is de ad whileshe liveth " (1 T im, v. 6); and of him self that he h ad been" in deat hs oft " (2 Co r. xi. 23).

But such passages present no difficult y, and are ea silyunderstood even b y a child. Thus the " widow " is " dead "-that is to all sense of spiritual thin gs-whilst" living inpleasure ," though no one would fancy th at the Apo stlemeant she was dead in fact!

So also St. P aul was" in deaths oft,"-that is in situa-tions of gr eat pe -ril, and such as would have resulted in d eathhad he not have been miraculously pr eserved ; as forinstance wh en the poi sonou s viper fastened on hi s hand, and he shook it off and f elt no harm.

It is to be carefully ob served that the radical or ro o t

meaning of the word r emains alw ays the s ame in such likepassages althou gh used in a figurative sense; and th e truemeaning is to b e gathered from the cont ext."

It is also mo st true that Immortalit y and Et ernal Lifeinclude much mor e than the naked word s imply. They in-

clude for in stance "glory and honour" iRom, ii. 7 ). Butwhy i s this? Is it because they do not m ean wh at they

seem to mean? or is i t not rather that the goodness of Godhas as sociated inseparably with them the gifts of " glory andhonour. " This association of ins eparable blessings does notsurely deprive those word s of their natur al signi fication!

Now Eternal Life , apart from all that the gr ace of God

has associ ated with it , means simpl y living for eoe r: and

Immortality is tha t which cann ot di e and therefore m ust livefor ever.

With out, then, in the least d enying the signa l benefit scombined with the se two e xpres sions , it may with thestricte st propriety be m aintained th at Immort ality andEternal Life are convert ible terms: that i s, may be sub-stituted th e one for the ot her in most, if not in all the t extswhere th ey occu r. At the same time .ib is freely admi ttedthat in some (as Rom. ii. 7 ), the latter s eems tohave a some-what fuller meaning; as also it is the expression m ostfrequently used in ref erence to the redeemed.

Returnin g now to the main subject; ev ery Bible readermust know that to the statement of St. P aul placed at thehead of this chapter , agrees the unvarying testimony ofHoly Script ure from first to la st. A few examples inaddition to that already cited (Rom. vi. 23) will suffi ce forour present purpose. By the u se of a Concord ance , or ofthe mar ginal ref erences , the number may be muchenlarged: -

Joh n iii, 15 .- " That whosoever b e li eve th in Him" (Chri s t) " s ho uldnot peri sh, but hav e eternal life."

" iii . 16. -" For G od so loved the wo rl d, tha t He g ave His onlybegot ten S o n that who soev e r b e liev e th in Him sh ouldno t perish, but h ave everlastin g life."

" ii i, 36. -" He th at b e li eve th on th e S o n ha th ever lasting life;and he th a t b e lie v e th not the S o n sha ll no t see life."

v. 24 .-" He th a t h ea re th My word , and b e liev e th . , .. hathever las ting li fe."

" vi . 4 7. -" H e th a t b e lieveth on M e hath everla sting l ife."

" x. 28. -" I giv e unto them etern a l life; and th ey sh a ll neverperish; "

" xvii . 2.-" A s Thou h as t g iven Him po w er over al l fl es h, th a tHe should give eterna l life," e tc.

1 John v. 11. -" Thi s is th e reco rd, that God hath gi ven t o us etern a llife, and this lif e is in His Son ."

" v. 1 2 .-" H e that hath th e Son hath l ife; a nd he that h a thnot th e S on of Go d hath no t life."

" i i . 17 .-" He th a t d oe th th e w illof G od ab ide th. fa?' eve? '."

What can be pl ainer than all thi s, if only words beallowed to hav e their natural forc e? God hath bestowed o ncertain individua ls a cer tain gift, variously termed" life, "" eternal li fe," or "everlas ting life," but a ll clear ly sig nify-ingone and the sam e thing.

.The "gift" is eternal life, " incl uding also "glory andhonour, " or what m eans th e same thin g and includes al sothe same bl essings, Immort ality. But if Immort ality b ethe common inh eritance of all men , how can it b e said to b e

given ? Surely God could in no sen se and with no prop rietybe said to give men that which they had b efore; which wastheir s by birth , of ne cessi ty, and by nature !

The FOURTHbook (P sa lms xc.-cvi. ) is the" Numb er s"

PRACTICAL HEROISM.BY MRS. T. H. GRIFFITHS.

" IT's a nice thing to be a real live hero, ain't it, Lou?"said I, throwing down the paper I had been reading, andlazily stretching myself out on the lounge. "I tell you, JimHenderson's lucky. I only wish I had been in his place theother night when he caught those burglars so nicely. Why,the public mind is just wild about him . He's petted andpraised, and pointed out as he goes along the street;and to-day's paper states that Dodge and Fielding, theproprietors of the store where the thieves broke in, aregoing to give a dinner in his honour. You better believethere was a crowd around him yesterday when he wasshowing the bullet-hole in his hat. He is made, he is ."

" Fudge! " exclaimed Lou, going on with her everlastingbasting; "and what will it amount to? A puff or two inthe papers-a nine-days' wonder-and it'fl done. JimmyHenderson will be Jimmy Henderson again, his brave actcommitted to the past. I know.

"No, you don't," I replied, testily. ., People are not soungrateful as you think . I only wish I had a chance to beheroic. I 'd test their stability ."

" You have," said mother, quietly, adjusting a long seamunder the tiny shoe of the sewing-machine. "Everybodyhas. Life is full of opportunities, It is easy enough forpeople to prove themselves heroes or cowards. And thereis a Book of Remembrance written, in 'which is kept arecord of their actions . So you see there's no danger of itsbeing, as Lou says, only a nine -days' wonder.

" Oh, well," said I, in a disgusted kind of tone, "youknow very well, mother, that don't pertain to this life."

"All the better, if it goes on unto life eternal," said she, solemnly. "But you made a mistake in your assertion,Bertie. It does affect this life, if it does not actually pertainto it. Blot out of this world the people who are living thelives of true heroism, who are patient in tribulation, forgiv-ing amid persecution, unswerving in doing right for right'ssake, and you leave it in utter darkness. 'Ye are the lightof the world ,'said Jesus."

"Yes," said I triumphantly, "But you can 't deny thatthat was meant for Christians only."

"Nor you can't deny that everybody ought to beChristians," said she, quietly; "so it includes Herbert, too,I think; at least indirectly."

"And I tell you what," said Lou, taking a half-dozen pinsout of her mouth, and sticking them, one by one, into thecushion, "I think, for all this much talked-of act of JimmyHenderson's was a very brave one, his self-denial in givingup school, and play, and every other thing that the heart ofa boy delights in, to drudge in Dodge and Fielding's store,to help his poor, over-worked mother, was a much braverone,"

Something in her words jarred upon me, and I merelysniffed in reply, as I took up the paper again.

,. But I tell you what , Bert," she went on in a minute,

"you can follow Jimmy's example in the last-mentionedline, and make yourself illustrious. I 'm sure mother and Iwould be overjoyed."

"No doubt," I returned, that's like your heroic self .Very considerate in you to expect a fellow to work whenhe's sick, ain't it? , j

"You're not sick, " said Lou, stoutly. "You only thinkso. It all lies in your imagination. I 'm positive, if youwould only brace yourself up with a little determination, you 'd soon get over your inability to work. I tell you, brother Bert, you are going to be a perfectly worthless man,if you keep on in your present way of life. For my part, Idon't see how anyone with a spark of humanity in hisbreast can lie around and let his mother chop wood, weedthe garden, and stitch her life out in order to support hislazin -ess. If I was mother I'd oust you at once ."

"Oh, shnt up!" said I, indignantly, rising from mycouch, and striding out -doors. I was very angry. Not onlyat Lou, whose words, bitterly as they rankled in my heart,I knew to be true, but also at myself, in an uneasy, ashamedkind of way. Here I was, fifteen years old, hands and facewhite as a girl's, shoulders anything but erect, and a generalair of do -nothingness about me. I had been a delicate child, and had grown up with the idea that I was not able to work.I had become accustomed to allowing mother to wait uponme, and fancied myself injured if Lou called on me for the

slightest favour. But now, as I glanced over the neglectedyard and garden, conscience stung me into action, and witha deep resolve that it should be the last time Lou shouldaccuse me of meanness, I picked myself up from the grasswhere I had thrown myself , and stalked down town toJ ohnson's feed-store .

" Mr. Johnson," said I, walking back to where the pro -prietor was standing, "have you engaged a boy to deliveryour goods yet? "

" Not yet, Herbert. Good boys are hard to find just now.Do you know one you would like to recommend? "

"I know of one who would like to try," said I, my eyesfalling before his kind se arching glance. And then I lookedup, saying, suddenly, my heart thumping with the effort ittook to say it: "Mr. Johnson, I-I am ashamed of myself ."

"For the first time, Bertie ?" said he, half playfully, laying a kind hand on my round shoulder . And thendrawing me into a more secluded corner, he got the truthfrom me, and promised to try to cure me of my indolence." But remember this, Bert," said he, in conclusion, and takea bit of advice from your father's old friend; and that is!you mustn't depend on me. It won 't do. There's only One

OUTo f all Christ's word s and mir acles a se lection h as beenmade. It is a D ivine se lection. B eing Div ine, it is perf ect.

There is no imperfection here, either in r eference to wha t isinserted or to w hat is omitted. Th e feeling ofte n occ urs,Oh, th at there were more of the se words a nd m irac leswr itten down for us I No; it is not nece ssary, O thers maysay, Might not this passage have been omi tted? No; itcould n ot be omitt ed.It is a se lection precisely suit ed to th e end in vi ew. The

rea son why some thin gs a re omitt ed whi ch we might wi shinserted , and som e things inserted we m ight wi sh-omitted,is ju st that the addition or omi ssion would ha ve hinde redthe object in view. The multitude of facts and truthsomitted i s an imme nse treas ure-house, the doors of whichwill o ne d ay be throw n ope n to us. The miracles recordedare r eprese ntat ive mir acles, so that wh atever lesso n wegather from anyon e of them, we k now th at it is con firmedby being done perh aps a t hou sand times.

What is the objec t, then , of these s igns and miracl es?They are all in tended to prove t hat Jesus Christ is the Sonof the li ving God. And h ow do they prove this? The yprov e it in r elation to the proph ecies of th e com ing MessiahThey show that thi s Jes us of Naza reth was th e ve ry Per sonspok en of all along; that He was the Seed of the womanHe of wh om Enoch proph esied; He r ega rding whomAbraham g ot the p romise that all n ations should be blesse din Him; whom Jacob saw as the rising S tar; whom M osespoke of as a Prophet like unto h imself; whom Dav id celebrated in all H is psalms; He of whom Solomon sung in thSong of Song", o f whom Jeremiah spoke as JehovahTsidkenu .

Is this onl y an hi stori cal fac t, or is there some meanin gin it for u s? Yes, t hese facts contain dep ths no line canfathom, heights no wing can sca le; they a re longer than thearth , broader than the se a; they con tain th e un searchableriches o f God , the u nsearchab le riches of Chr ist. AlwaysGod has w rapped up h is great truths in fac ts. For instance, what of Beth lehem? The histo ry is this : One ni gha poor man and' wom an were trave lling, and th e wom abrought forth a littl e bab e in an inn. Th at is a s implfact, and the world h as been studying th at fact for ages anwill never get to the bottom of it. Th e Incarnation of t hEternal World i s some thing unsea rchable.

Ou r passag e says, "These a re written that ye m ighbelieve." What then? "And that believing ye mighhave life th rough H is name." This wo ndrous fac t, thenconta ins in it eve rlasting life for the dead in trespa sses a nsins; and th e way in which I get possess ion o f this factby believing it. I should not like to wander into any diquisition about f aith, for it is by such di scuss ions that meare p erplexed. God has u sed the word " believing "invery obvious sense, so th at the way faring man, thoughfool, need not err. There is only one d efinit ion, in thBible, of faith,-that it is the substance of t hings hoped fothe ev idence of t hing s not seen . It is just because of isimpl icity that it is a s tumbl ing-block. Men won 't believit to be so simple a th ing that e ternal life comes w ithAnd me n try to m ake it a complex thing, so that they maobta in from it some food for self-righteousness. It i s etrao rdinary that so many should put away f rom t hem thcom fort of ju stification, by pu zzling with th emselves wheth ethey ha ve gone through th e performa nce of believ ing.seems incredible that men should make that mysterious anmyst ic which God has made simp le, and yet i t is in thway that m ultitudes are wa lking in darkne ss and h aving nlight, and losing the joy they m ight ha ve in their pilg rimag eWe ask the question far too often, What is the qual ity, whis the quantity, of my f aith ? We shall neve r get thquestion satisfac toril y answered. Bu t we ca nnot t oo oftask about the t ruth and significance of the gloriou s factswh ich our faith is to rest.-Hora tius Banal ', D.D .
