The prophecies concerning Jesus’ birth are numerous, and many of them refer to Jesus’ lineage. Old Testament prophecies tell of the promised Messiah being born from the seed of a woman (Gen. 3:15); from the seeds of Abraham (Gen. 22:18), Isaac (Gen. 21:12), and Jacob (Num. 24:17); from the tribe of Judah (Micah 5:2); from the line of Jesse (Isa. 11:1); and from the house of David (Jer. 23:5). The prophecies said He would be born of a virgin (Isa. 7:14) and would be the Son of God (1 Chr. 17:13-14; Ps. 2:7). Jesus fulfilled all of these prophecies.

In Bible times, Jews took great care to accurately record family genealogies. The family a person belonged to was directly linked to property rights. Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38 both chronicle the genealogy of Jesus. The account in Matthew presents Jesus as the king of the Jews—the legal heir to the throne of David. The account in Luke was written to Greek Christians and focuses on Jesus’ descent from Adam.

Jesus was born as a baby in Bethlehem. He had earthly parents, Mary and Joseph, but His true Father is God. Jesus is fully God and fully man.

As fully God, in Him “the entire fullness of God’s nature dwells bodily” (Col. 2:9). As fully man, Jesus has a human body, human mind, and human emotions. (See Luke 2:7,52; Matt. 26:38.) He is our sinless representative (2 Cor. 5:21), sympathetic high priest (Heb. 4:15), and substitute sacrifice (1 John 4:10).

Use this Bible story with the kids you teach to review Jesus’ ancestors and their stories in the Old Testament. Help kids recognize that God had been working out His plan to send Jesus over hundreds of years—through Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Jesse, David, Solomon, and Josiah. God sent Jesus to earth to save people from their sins.

Genealogy of ChristMatthew 1:1-17; Luke 3:23-38

Jesus is God the Son, and He is human too. No one else is like Jesus. When Jesus came to earth and was born as a little baby, Jesus had human parents too. Their names were Mary and Joseph.

Everyone on earth has a family: a mommy and daddy, grandmas and grandpas, great-grandmas and great-grandpas, and great-great-great grandmas and grandpas. Jesus had a family on earth too. Jesus had a mommy, a daddy, grandmas, grandpas, great-grandmas and grandpas, and some great-greats too … all the way back to Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden.

These are the people in Jesus’ family. Adam and Eve had sons. Some of them were Cain, Abel, and Seth. When Seth grew up and got married, his wife had a baby. The baby’s name was Enos (EE nahs). Enos grew up and got married, and he had a family too. Enos’s great-great-grandson was named Enoch (EE nuhk). Enoch loved God, and he was part of Jesus’ family.

Then there was Noah! Noah did what God said, and he built an ark. Noah used the ark to save his family from a big flood. Two other people in Jesus’ family were Abraham and his son Isaac. Isaac had a family, and one of his sons was named Jacob. Jacob was part of Jesus’ family too.

Years later, a man was born into Jesus’ family. He married a woman named Rahab (RAY hab). Rahab helped God’s people. She hid some of their spies when they came to Jericho. Rahab had a baby named Boaz (BOH az). He grew up to be a farmer, and he married Ruth. Then Boaz and Ruth had a son, Obed (OH bed).

Jesus’ family was very big! When Obed grew up, he had a son named Jesse. Jesse had many sons. His youngest son was David. David was only a boy when God chose him to be the king of Israel. King David liked to write. He wrote songs. Some of David’s songs were about the time when Jesus would come to earth. David was not the only king in Jesus’ family. David’s son Solomon was a king too. There were many kings in

Jesus’ family. Then came Jacob. His son was named Joseph. Joseph took Mary to

be his wife. Mary and Joseph were the earthly parents of Jesus, God’s Son.

Christ Connection: Jesus came to earth and was born as a baby. Jesus’ parents on earth were Mary and Joseph. Jesus is God’s Son. He came to rescue people from their sins.

Toss the ancestorsPlace the ancestor cards in the center of a large towel. Gather the children around to hold onto the edge with both hands. Ask: Who is Jesus? The preschoolers will lift their arms together and say, Jesus is God’s Son as the pictures “fly.” Invite kids to retrieve the cards and play as time allows.Say • Who is Jesus? Jesus is God’s Son.

String the ancestorsPrinted cards with the names of Jesus’ ancestors from the

Bible story on index cards and number the corner of each card. String yarn and place clothespins at intervals to represent Jesus’ ancestors. Invite kids to put the ancestors in order. When all of Jesus’ ancestors are in chronological order, read their names aloud.Say • All of these people were in Jesus’ earthly family.

Who is Jesus’ true Father? (God) Why did God send His Son, Jesus, to earth? (to save us from our sin) Who is Jesus? Jesus is God’s Son.

Transition to large group

Measure yourself Provide objects children can use to measure themselves, such as blocks, cardboard boxes, pieces of paper, books, and markers. Using a large piece of paper make a chart that shows how many objects "tall" the children are.Say • Each of you is still growing. Guess what? Jesus was

born as a baby, but He grew big and tall just like you. [Read Luke 2:52.] God and men were both pleased with Jesus as He grew big, strong, and wise. Who is Jesus? Jesus is God’s Son.

Chain paper clipsMake a paper clip chain as a visual for a family genealogy. Say all the names of the people in Jesus’ genealogy from the Bible story as you add more and more paper clips.Say • God chose the people who would be in Jesus’ family.

They tried to always obey God, but they sinned, just like you and me. Jesus is perfect. He is human, and He is God too. Who is Jesus? Jesus is God’s Son.

Make a family viewing stripA foam cup for each child with two slits each slightly larger than two inches on opposite sides just under the lip of the cup. Guide kids to cut out the strips from the printable.

Invite the kids to draw pictures of their families on the strips. Show how to use the viewer to see the pictures. Say • Did you draw your ancestors among your family

members? An ancestor is a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent. God gave Jesus an earthly family. Who were Jesus’ earthly parents? (Mary and Joseph) Who is Jesus? Jesus is God’s Son.

Review the Bible storyPlay a review game by calling three volunteers to the front of the room at a time. Give each child a picture of an ancestor. Kids will stand side by side, in chronological order. The children in the audience will close their eyes while you “mix up” the ancestors. When the children open their eyes, they must direct the ancestors back to their proper spots.

Ask review questions: 1. What is an ancestor? (a person in your family who

was born before you) 2. Who was Jesus’ father on earth? (Joseph)3. Who is Jesus’ true Father? (God)4. Why is Jesus special? (He is God and He is a

human. He is the only human who never sinned. He came to die for the sins of the world.)

5. Who is Jesus? Jesus is God’s Son.

PrayPray, thanking God for sending His Son, Jesus, to earth as a baby. Thank God for keeping His promise to Jesus’ ancestors. Thank Jesus for saving us from our sins.

Talk about missions Talk about how important it is to tell our friends and family

the ways that Jesus is special. Ask children to share some of the reasons Jesus is special. Sing a song of praise such as “I Want to Tell Everybody.”Say • Many people today think Jesus was just another

human being who helped people and taught good things. Jesus was born as a human being, and He did help many people, but Jesus is so much more! Jesus is God’s very own Son. God sent Jesus to earth to die on the cross so that when we love and trust in Jesus as our Savior, we are forgiven. Who is Jesus? Jesus is God’s Son. Say it with me one more time: Who is Jesus? Jesus is God’s Son!

Play “Who Am I?”Describe some of Jesus’ ancestors as the children try to guess who it is. Examples include the following: “This ancestor of Jesus built a big boat and took care of the animals”; “This ancestor was the first man created”; and “This ancestor killed the giant Goliath with just a stone and a sling.” You may need to refer to the timeline map to help kids recall past Bible stories. Kids may also use the ancestor cards as a reference.Say • God was faithful to each and every one of these

people in Jesus’ family. God knew they would be Jesus’ ancestors. Not many of them were famous, wealthy, or powerful. But none of those things matters to God. What matters to God is that people love and obey Him. This is why Jesus was born, so that all who love and trust in Him can be saved from their sins. Who is Jesus? Jesus is God’s Son.

• “I Want to Tell Everybody” song
