CHAPTER 11 Paul , an Apost le of Jesus

Christ by the purpose of God,in the hope of the l i fe whichis in Christ Jesus,2 To Timothy, my well-loved

chi ld: Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father andChrist Jesus our Lord.3 I give praise to God, whose

servant I have been, with a

heart free from sin, from thetime of my fathers, becausein my prayers at all times thethought o f you is with me,night and day4 Desiring to see you, keep-

ing in my memory your weep-ing, so that I may be ful l of joy;5 Having in mind your true

faith, which first was in yourmothers mother Lois, and inyour mother Eunice, and, I amcertain, is now in you.6 For th is reason I say to

you, Let that grace of Godwhich is in you, given to youby my hands, have livingpower.7 For God did not give us a

spi ri t of fear, but of powerand of love and of sel f-con-trol.8 Have no feeling of shame,

    then, for the witness of ourLord or for me, his prisoner:but undergo all things for thegood news in the measure ofthe power of God;

9 Who gave us salvat ion, marking us out for h is pur -pose, not on account of ourworks, but in the measure ofh is purpose and his grace, which was given to us inChrist Jesus before timeseternal,10 But has now been made

clear by the revelation of ourSaviour Christ Jesus, who put

an end to death and made lifeunending come to lightthrough the good news,11 Of which I was made a

preacher and an Apostle anda teacher;12 And for which I undergo

these things: but I have nofeel ing of shame. For I haveknowledge of him in whom Ihave faith, and I am certainthat he is able to keep thatwhich I have given into h iscare till that day.13 Keep the form of those

true words which you hadfrom me, in fa ith and lovewhich is in Christ Jesus.14 That good thing which

was given to you keep safe, through the Holy Spirit whichis in us.15 You have had news that

all those in Asia went awayfrom me; among whom arePhygelus and Hermogenes:16 May the Lord give mercy

to the house of Onesiphorusbecause he frequently gave

me help, and had no feel ingof shame because I was inchains;17 But when he was in Rome,

he went in search of me ev-

erywhere, and came to me18 (May he have the Lords

mercy in that day); and of allhe did for me at Ephesus youhave full knowledge.

CHAPTER 21 So then, my child, be

strong in the grace which is inChrist Jesus.2 And the things which I

have said to you before anumber of witnesses, give tothose of the faith, so thatthey may be teachers of oth-ers.3 Be ready to do without the

comforts of life, as one of thearmy of Christ Jesus.4 A fighting man, when he is

with the army, keeps himselffree from the business of this

l i fe so that he may be pleas-ing to him who has taken himinto his army.5 And if a man takes part in

a competition he does not getthe crown if he has not keptthe rules.6 It is right for the worker in

    the f ie lds to be the f irst totake of the fruit.7 Give thought to what I say;

for the Lord will give you wis-dom in all things.8 Keep in mind Jesus Christ,

of the seed of David, whocame back from the dead, asmy good news gives witness:9 In which I put up with the

    hardest conditions, even

prison chains, l ike one whohas done a crime; but theword of God is not in chains.10 But I undergo al l things

for the saints, so that they

may have salvation in ChristJesus with eternal glory.11 This is a true saying: I f

we undergo death with him, then wil l we be l iv ing wi thhim:12 I f we go on to the end,

then we wil l be rul ing withhim: if we say we have noknowledge of h im, then hewill say he has no knowledge

of us:13 I f we are without fai th,

still he keeps faith, for he willnever be untrue to himself.14 Put these things before

them, giving them orders inthe name of the Lord to keepthemselves from fightingabout words, which is of noprofit, only causing error intheir hearers.

15 Let it be your care to getthe approval of God, as aworkman who has no causefor shame, giving the trueword in the right way.16 But take no part in wrong

and foolish ta lk , for thosewho do so will go farther intoevil,17 And their words wil l be

l ike poisoned wounds in the

f lesh: such are Hymenaeusand Philetus;18 Men whose ideas are al l

false, who say that the com-ing back from the dead haseven now taken place, over-turning the faith of some.19 But Gods strong base is

unchanging, having this sign,The Lord has knowledge ofthose who are his: and, Leteveryone by whom the nameof the Lord is named be

turned away from evil.20 Now in a great house

there are not only vessels ofgold and silver, but others ofwood and earth, and somewhich are honoured and somewithout honour.21 I f a man makes himself

clean from these, he will be avessel for honour, made holy, ready for the masters use,

ready for every good work.22 But keep yoursel f from

those desires of the fleshwhich are strong when thebody is young, and go afterr ighteousness, fai th, love, peace, with those whoseprayers go up to the Lordfrom a clean heart.23 And put away foolish and

    uncontrolled quest ionings,

seeing that they are a causeof trouble.24 For it is not right for the

Lords servant to make trou-ble, but he is to be gentle toall, ready in teaching, puttingup with wrong,25 Gently guiding those who

go against the teaching; if bychance God may give them achange of heart and true

knowledge,26 And so they may get

themselves free from the netof the Evi l One, being madethe prisoners of the Lordsservant , for the purpose of God.

CHAPTER 31 But be certain of this, that

in the last days times of trou-ble will come.2 For men wil l be lovers of

self, lovers of money, upliftedin pride, given to bitterwords, going against the au-thority of their fathers, nevergiving praise, having no reli-gion,3 Without natural love, bitter

haters, saying evil of others, violent and uncontrolled, hat-ing all good,4 False to their friends, act-

ing without thought, lifted upin mind, loving pleasure morethan God;5 Having a form of religion,

but turning their backs on thepower of it: go not with these.6 For these are they who go

secretly into houses, makingprisoners of foolish women, weighted down with sin, turned from the way by their

evil desires,7 Ever learning, and never

coming to the knowledge ofwhat is true.8 And as James and Jambres

went against Moses , so dothese go against what is true:men of evil minds, who, test-ed by fai th, are seen to befalse.9 But they will go no farther:

for their foolish behaviour willbe clear to all men, as theirswas in the end.10 But you took as your ex-

    ample my teaching, behav-iour, purpose, and faith; mylong waiting, my love, my qui-et undergoing of trouble;

11 My punishments and pain;the things which came to meat Ant ioch, at Icon ium, atLystra; the cruel a ttacksmade on me: and the Lord

made me free from them all.12 Yes, and all whose pur-

pose is to be living in theknowledge of God in Christ Je-sus, will be cruelly attacked.13 Evil and false men will be-

come worse and worse, usingdeceit and themselves over-come by deceit.14 But see that you keep to

    the teaching you have been

given and the things of whichyou are certain, conscious ofwho has been your teacher;15 And that from the t ime

when you were a chi ld, youhave had knowledge of theholy Writings, which are ableto make you wise to salva-t ion, through faith in Chr istJesus.16 Every holy Writing which

comes from God is of profi tfor teaching, for training, forguiding, for education inrighteousness:17 So that the man of God

may be complete, trained andmade ready for every goodwork.

CHAPTER 41 I give you orders, before

God and Christ Jesus, who willbe the judge of the living andthe dead, and by his revela-tion and his kingdom;2 Be preaching the word at

all times , in every place;make protests, say sharpwords, give comfort, with long

waiting and teaching;3 For the time will come

when they wil l not take thetrue teaching; but, moved bytheir desires, they will get for

themselves a great number ofteachers for the pleasure ofhearing them;4 And shutting their ears to

what is true, wil l be turnedaway to bel ief in fool ish sto-ries.5 But be self-controlled in all

things, do without comfort, goon preaching the good news, complet ing the work which

has been given you to do.6 For I am even now being

offered, and my end is near.7 I have made a good fight, I

have come to the end of myjourney, I have kept the faith:8 From now on, the crown of

righteousness is made readyfor me, which the Lord, theupright judge, Will give to meat that day: and not only to

me, but to all those who havehad love for his revelation.9 Do your best to come to

me before long:10 For Demas has gone away

from me, for love of thispresent l ife, and has gone toThessalonica: Crescens hasgone to Galatia, Titus to Dal-matia.11 Only Luke is with me. Get

Mark and take him with you;for he is of use to me in thework.12 Tychicus I sent to Eph-

esus.13 The coat which I did not

take from Troas and which iswith Carpus, get when you

come, and the books, special-ly the papers.14 Alexander the copper-

worker did me much wrong:the Lord will give him the re-

ward of his works:15 But be on the watch for

him, for he was violent in hisattacks on our teaching.16 At my first meeting with

my judges, no one took mypart, but al l went away fromme. May it not be put to theiraccount.17 But the Lord was by my

side and gave me strength; so

that through me the newsmight be given out in fullmeasure, and all the Gentilesmight give ear: and I was tak-en out of the mouth of thelion.18 The Lord wil l keep me

safe from every evil work andwil l give me salvation in hiskingdom in heaven: to whombe glory for ever and ever. So

be it.19 Give my love to Pr isca

and Aqui la and those of thehouse of Onesiphorus.20 Erastus was stopping at

Corinth; but Trophimus, whenI last saw him was at Miletus,ill.21 Do your best to come be-

fore the winter. Eubulus sendsyou his love, and Pudens and

Linus and Claudia, and all thebrothers.22 The Lord be with your

    spirit. Grace be with you.
