CHAPTER 11 Simon Peter, a servant and Apos-

t le o f Jesus Chr is t, to those whowith us have a part in the same holyfaith in the righteousness of our Godand Saviour Jesus Christ:2 May grace and peace ever be in-

creasing in you, in the knowledge ofGod and of Jesus our Lord;3 Because by h is power he has

    given us everything necessary for

life and righteousness, through theknowledge of him who has been ourguide by his glory and virtue;4 And through this he has given us

the hope of great rewards highly tobe valued; so that by them we mighthave our part in Gods being, and bemad e f re e f ro m t he d es tr uct io nwhich is in the wor ld through thedesires of the flesh.5 So, for this very cause, take every

care ; joining v ir tue to fai th , andknowledge to virtue,6 And self-control to knowledge,

and a quiet mind to self-control, andfear of God to a quiet mind,7 And love of the brothers to fear

of God, and to love of the brothers, love itself.8 For i f you have these th ings in

good measure, they will make youfertile and full of fruit in the knowl-

edge of our Lord Jesus Christ.9 For the man who has not these

things is blind, seeing only what isnear, having no memory of how hewas made clean from his old sins.10 For this reason, my brothers,

take all the more care to make yourselection and approval certain; for if

you do these things you will neverhave a fall:11 For so the way will be open to

you into the eternal kingdom of ourLord and Saviour Jesus Christ.12 For this reason I will be ready at

a ll t imes to keep your memory ofthese things awake, though you havethe knowledge of them now and arewell based in your present faith.13 And it seems right to me, as long

as I am in this tent of flesh, to keepyour minds awake by working onyour memory;14 For I am consc ious tha t in a

short time I will have to put off thist en t o f f les h, as o ur Lor d J es usChrist has made clear to me.15 And I wi l l take every care so

that you may have a clear memoryof these things after my death.16 For when we gave you news of

the power and the coming o f ourLord Jesus Christ, our teaching wasnot based on stories put together byart , but we were eye-witnesses ofhis glory.17 For God the Fathe r gave h im

honour and glory, when such a voicecame to him out of the great glory, saying, This is my dearly loved Son,with whom I am well pleased.18 And this voice came from

heaven even to our ears , when wewere with him on the holy mountain.19 And so the words of the prophets

    are made more certain; and it is wellfor you to give attention to them asto a light shining in a dark place, tillthe dawn comes and the morningstar is seen in your hearts;

20 Being consc ious in the f ir stp lace tha t no man by h imself maygive a special sense to the words ofthe prophets.21 For these words d id not ever

come through the impulse of men:but the prophets had them from God,being moved by the Holy Spirit.

CHAPTER 21 But there were false prophets

among the people, as there wil l befalse teachers among you, who willsecretly put forward wrong teach-ings for your destruction, even turn-ing away f rom the Lord who gave

himself for them; whose destructionwill come quickly, and they them-selves will be the cause of it.2 And a great number will go with

them in the ir evi l ways , throughwhom the true way will have a badname.3 And in their desire for profit they

will come to you with words of de-ceit , l ike traders doing business insouls: whose punishment has beenready for a long t ime and their de-struction is watching for them.4 For if God did not have pity for

the angels who did evi l, but sentthem down into hell , to be kept inchains of eternal night till they werejud ged ;5 And did not have mercy on the

world which then was, but only keptsafe Noah, a preacher of righteous-ness, with seven others, when he letloose the waters over the world ofthe evil-doers;6 And sent destruction on Sodom

and Gomorrah, burning them upwith f ir e a s an example to thosewhose way of l ife might in the fu-ture be unpleasing to him;7 And kept safe Lot , the upr ight

man, who was deeply t roubled bythe unclean life of the evil-doers8 (Because the soul of that upright

man living among them was painedfrom day to day by seeing and hear-

ing their crimes):9 The Lord is able to keep the up-

right safe in the time of testing, andto keep evil-doers under punishmenttill the day of judging;10 But specially those who go after

the unclean desires of the flesh, andmake sport of authority. Ready totake chances , uncontrol led, theyhave no fear of saying evil of thosein high places:11

Though the angel s, who a regreater in s trength and power, donot make use of v io lent languageagainst them before the Lord.12 But these men, like beasts with-

out reason, whose natural use is tobe taken and put to death, crying outagainst things of which they have noknowledge, will undergo that samedestruction which they are designingfor others;13 For the evi l which overtakes

them is the reward of their evil-do-ing: such men take their pleasure inthe delights of the flesh even in thedaytime; they are like the marks of adis ease, lik e pois oned woundsamong you, feast ing together withyou in joy;14 Having eyes full of evil desire,

never having enough of sin; turningfeeble sou ls out o f the t rue way;they are children of cursing, whosehearts are well used to bitter envy;15 Turning out of the true w ay, they

have gone wandering in error, afterthe way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who was pleased to take payment forwrongdoing;16 But his wrongdoing was pointed

out to h im: an ass , ta lk ing wi th amans voice, put a stop to the errorof the prophet.17 These are fountains without wa -

    t er, an d mis ts b ef or e a d ri vin g

storm; for whom the eternal night iskept in store.18 For with h igh-sounding false

words, making use of the attractionof unclean desires of the flesh, theyget into the ir power those newlymade free from those who are livingin error;19 Saying tha t they wil l be f ree,

while they themselves are the ser-vants of destruction; because what-

ever gets the better of a man makesa servant of him.20 For if , af ter they have got free

from the unclean things of the worldthrough the knowledge of the Lordand Saviour Jesus Christ, they areagain taken in the net and overcome, their las t condi t ion is worse thantheir first.21 For it would have been better for

them to have had no knowledge ofthe way of righteousness, than to goback again from the holy law whichwas g iven to them, a ft er hav ingknowledge of it.22 They are an example of that true

saying, The dog has gone back tothe food it had put out, and the pigwhich had been washed to its rollingin the dirty earth.

CHAPTER 31 My loved ones , th is i s now my

second let ter to you, and in this asin the first, I am attempting to keepyour true minds awake;2 So that you may keep in mind the

words of the holy prophets in thepast , and the law of the Lord andSaviour which was given to you by

his Apostles.3 Having first of all the knowledge

that in the las t days there wi l l bemen who, ruled by their evil desires, will make sport of holy things,4

Saying, Where is the hope of hiscoming? From the death of the fa-thers t i ll now everything has goneon as it was from the making of theworld.5 But in taking this view they put

out of their minds the memory thatin the old days there was a heaven, and an earth lifted out of the waterand circled by water, by the word ofGod;6

And that the wor ld which thenwas ca me t o a n en d t hr oug h t heoverflowing of the waters.7 But the present heaven and the

present earth have been kept for de-struction by f ire, which is wait ingfor them on the day of the judgingand destruction of evil men.8 But, my loved ones, keep in mind

this one thing, tha t wi th the Lordone day is the same as a thousandyears, and a thousand years are nomore than one day.9 The Lord is not slow in keeping

his word, as he seems to some, buthe is wait ing in mercy for you, notdesiring the destruction of any, buttha t a ll may be turned f rom theirevil ways.10 But the day o f the Lord wil l

come like a thief; and in that day theheavens wil l be rol led up with agreat noise, and the substance of theear th wil l be changed by v io lentheat , and the world and everythingin it will be burned up.11 Seeing then that all these things

are coming to such an end, what sortof persons is i t r ight for you to be,in all holy behaviour and righteous-

ness,12 Looking for and truly desir ing

the coming of the day of God, whenthe heavens wil l come to an endthrough fire, and the substance of

the ear th wil l be changed by thegreat heat?13 But having faith in his word, we

are looking for a new heaven and anew earth, which will be the resting-place of righteousness.14 For this reason, my loved ones,

as you are looking for these things, take great care that when he comesyou may be in peace before h im,free from sin and every evil thing.15

And be cer ta in tha t the longwaiting of the Lord is for salvation;even as our brother Paul has said inhis letters to you, from the wisdomwhich was given to him;16 And as he said in all his letters,

which had to do with these things;in which are some hard sayings, sothat , l ike the rest of the holy Writ-ings, they are twisted by those whoare uncer ta in and wi thout knowl-edge, to the des truc tion o f the irsouls.17 For this reason, my loved ones,

having knowledge of these thingsbefore they take p lace , take carethat you are not turned away by theerror of the uncontrolled, so fallingfrom your true faith.18 But be increased in grace and in

t he k no wl ed ge o f ou r Lor d an dSaviour Jesus Christ . May he haveglory now and for ever. So be i t.
