CHAPTER 11 Paul , an Apost le of Jesus

Chr ist, by the order of Godour Saviour and Christ Jesusour hope;2 To Timothy, my true child

in the fai th: Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Fatherand Christ Jesus our Lord.3 I t was my desire, when I

    went on into Macedonia, that

you might make a stop atEphesus, to g ive orders tocertain men not to put for -ward a different teaching,4 Or to give attention to sto-

ries and long lists of genera-tions, from which come ques-tionings and doubts, in placeof Gods ordered way of l i fewhich is in faith;5 But the effect of the order

is love coming from a cleanheart, and a knowledge of what is right, and true faith:6 From which some have

been turned away, givingthemselves to foolish talking;7 Desiring to be teachers of

the law, though they have noknowledge of what they sayor of the statements whichthey make so certainly.8 We are conscious that the

law is good, if a man makes aright use of it,9 With the knowledge that

the law is made, not for theupr ight man, but for thosewho have no respect for law

and order, for evi l men andsinners, for the unholy andthose who have no religion, for those who put the ir fa-thers or mothers to death, fortakers of life,10 For those who go after

loose women, for those withunnatural desires, for thosewho take men prisoners, whomake false statements and

false oaths, and those who doany other things against theright teaching,11 Which may be seen in the

good news of the glory of thegreat God, which was giveninto my care.12 I give praise to him who

gave me power, Christ Jesusour Lord, because he took meto be true, making me his ser-vant,13 Though I had said violent

words against God, and donecruel acts, causing great trou-ble: but I was given mercy, because I did it withoutknowledge, not having faith;14 And the grace of our Lord

was very great, with faith andlove which is in Christ Jesus.15 It is a true saying , in

which all may put their faith, that Chr ist Jesus came intothe world to give salvation tos inners , o f whom I am thechief:16 But for this reason I was

given mercy, so that in me,

the ch ief o f s inners , JesusChrist might make clear allhis mercy, as an example tothose who in the future wouldhave faith in him to eternal

life.17 Now to the King eternal,

ever-l iving, unseen, the onlyGod, be honour and glory forever and ever. So be it.18 This order I give to you,

Timothy my son, in harmonywith the words of theprophets about you, so thatby them you may be strong, fighting the good fight,

19 Keeping faith, and beingconscious of wel l-doing; forsome, by not doing thesethings, have gone wrong inrelation to the faith:20 Such are Hymenaeus and

Alexander, whom I have givenup to Satan, so that they maysay no more evil wordsagainst God.

CHAPTER 21 My desire is, f irst of all ,

that you wil l make requestsand prayers and give praisefor all men;2 For kings and al l those in

author ity; so that we mayhave a calm and quiet l ife inall fear of God and serious be-haviour.3 This is good and pleasing

in the eyes of God ourSaviour;4 Whose desire is that a ll

men may have salvation andcome to the knowledge of what is true.5 For there is one God and

    one peacemaker between God

and men, the man Christ Je-sus,6 Who gave himself as an of-

fering for all; witness of whichwas to be given at the r ight

    time;7 And of this I became a

preacher and an Apostle(what I say is true, not false,)and a teacher of the Gentilesin the true faith.8 It is my desire, then, that

in every place men may givethemselves to prayer, l iftingup holy hands, without wrathor argument.

9 And that women may bedressed in simple clothing, with a quiet and serious air;not with twisted hair and goldor jewels or robes of greatprice;10 But clothed with good

works, as is r ight for womenwho are l iving in the fear ofGod.11 Let a woman quietly take

the place of a learner and beunder authority.12 In my opinion i t is r ight

for a woman not to be ateacher, or to have rule overa man, but to be quiet.13 For Adam was first

formed, then Eve;14 And Adam was not taken

by deceit, but the woman, be-ing tricked, became a wrong-

doer.15 But i f they go on in faith

and love and holy self-control,she wi l l be kept safe at thetime of childbirth.

    CHAPTER 31 This is a t rue saying, A

man desiring the position of aBishop has a desire for a goodwork.2 The Bishop, then, is to be a

man of good name, the hus-

band of one wife, sel f-con-trolled, serious-minded, hav-ing respect for order, openinghis house freely to guests, aready teacher;3 Not quickly moved to wrath

or blows, but gentle; no fight-er, no lover of money;4 Ruling his house well, hav-

    ing his children under controlwith all serious behaviour;

5 (For i f a man has not theart of rul ing his house, howwill he take care of the churchof God?)6 Not one newly taken into

the church, for fear that, through his high opinion ofhimself, he may come into thesame sin as the Evil One.7 And he is to have a good

    name among those outside

the church, so that nothingmay be said against him andhe may not be taken by thedesigns of the Evil One.8 Deacons, in the same way,

are to be serious in their be-haviour, not false in word, notgiven to taking much wine orgreatly desiring the wealth ofthis world;9 Keeping the secret of the

faith in a heart free from sin.10 And let these first be put

to the test; then let them be-come Deacons if there isnothing against them.11 Women are to be serious

in behaviour, saying no evil ofothers, controlling them-

selves, true in all things.12 Let Deacons be husbands

of one wife, ruling their chil-dren and their houses well.13 For those who have done

good work as Deacons get forthemselves a good posit ionand become free from fear inthe faith which is in Christ Je-sus.14 I am writing these things

to you, though I am hoping tocome to you before long;15 But i f I am long in com-

ing, this wi ll make c lear toyou what behaviour is r ight

for men in the house of God,which is the church of the liv-ing God, the pil lar and baseof what is true.16 And without argument,

great is the secret of religion:He who was seen in the flesh, who was given Gods approvalin the spirit, was seen by theangels, of whom the goodnews was given among the

nations, in whom the worldhad faith, who was taken upin glory.

CHAPTER 41 But the Spirit says clearly

that in later t imes some wil lbe turned away from thefaith, giv ing their minds tospirits of deceit, and theteachings of evil spirits,

2 Through the false ways ofmen whose words are untrue, whose hearts are burned aswith a heated iron;3 Who keep men from being

married and from taking foodwhich God made to be takenwith praise by those who

have fai th and t rue knowl -edge.4 Because everything which

God has made is good, andnothing is evi l , i f i t is taken

with praise:5 For it is made holy by the

word of God and by prayer.6 I f you keep these things

before the minds of the broth-ers, you wi l l be a good ser-vant of Christ Jesus, trainedin the words of the faith andof the r ight teaching whichhas been your guide:7 But have noth ing to do

with unclean and foolish sto-ries. Give yourself training inreligion:8 For the training of the body

is of profit for a little, but reli-gion is of profit in every way, giving hope for the life whichnow is, and for that which isto come.9 This is a t rue say ing, in

which all may put their faith.

10 And this is the purpose ofall our work and our fighting, because our hope is in the liv-ing God, who is the Saviour ofall men, and specially of those who have faith.11 Let these be your orders

and your teaching.12 Let no one make little of

you because you are young, but be an example to the

church in word, in behaviour,in love, in faith, in holy living.13 Till I come, give attention

to the reading of the holyWrit ings, to comfort ing thesaints, and to teaching.14 Make use of that grace in

you, which was given to you

by the word of the prophets, when the rulers of the churchput their hands on you.15 Have a care for these

    things; give yourself to them

with all your heart, so that allmay see how you go forward.16 Give attention to yourself

and your teaching. Go on inthese things; for in doing soyou will get salvation foryoursel f and for those whogive hearing to you.

CHAPTER 51 Do not say sharp words to

one who has authority in thechurch, but let your talk be asto a father, and to theyounger men as to brothers:2 To the older women as to

mothers, to the younger as tosisters, with a clean heart.3 Give honour to widows who

are truly widows.4 But i f any widow has chi l-

    dren or childrens children, let

these see that i t is r ight totake care of their family andtheir fathers and mothers: forthis is pleasing in the eyes ofGod.5 Now she who is truly a wid-

ow and without family putsher hope in God, giving her-self to prayer day and night.6 But she who gives herself

to pleasure is dead while she

is living.7 Give orders to this effect,

so that no evil may be said ofanyone.8 I f anyone has no care for

his family and those in h ishouse, he is false to the faith, and is worse than one who

    4

has no faith.9 Let no woman be numbered

among the widows who is un-der sixty years old, and onlyi f she has been the wife of

one man,10 And if witness is given of

her good works; if she hashad the care of chi ldren, i f she has been k ind to trav-ellers, washing the feet of thesaints, helping those who arein trouble, giv ing herself togood works.11 But to the younger wid-

ows say No: for when the ir

love is turned away fromChrist, they have a desire tobe married;12 And they are judged be-

cause they have been false totheir first faith;13 And they get into the way

of doing no work, going aboutfrom house to house; and notonly doing no work, but talk-ing foolishly, being over-inter-

ested in the business of oth-ers, saying things which theyhave no right to say.14 So it is my desire that the

younger widows may be mar-r ied and have children, con-tro lling the ir famil ies, andgiving the Evil One no chanceto say anything against them,15 For even now some are

    turned away to Satan.

16 If any woman of the faithhas relations who are widows, let her g ive them help , sothat the care of them doesnot come on the church, andso it may give help to thosewho are truly widowed.17 Let rulers whose rule is

good be honoured twice over, specially those whose work ispreaching and teaching.18 For the Writings say, It is

not right to keep the ox from

taking the grain when he iscrushing it. And, The workerhas a right to his reward.19 Do not take as true any

statement made against onein authority, but only if two orthree give witness to it.20 Say sharp words to sin-

ners when all are present, sothat the rest may be in fear.21 I give you orders before

God and Christ Jesus and theangels of Gods selection, tokeep these orders withoutgiv ing thought to one s idemore than another.22 Do not put hands on any

man without thought , andhave no part in other menssins: keep yourself clean.23 Do not take only water as

your drink, but take a l it tle

wine for the good of yourstomach, and because youare frequently ill.24 The sins of some men are

c lear ly seen, going beforethem to be judged; but withothers , thei r s ins go afterthem.25 In the same way, there

are good works which areclearly seen; and those which

are not so, may not be keptsecret.

CHAPTER 61 Let all who are servants

under the yoke give al l hon-our to their masters, so thatno evi l may be said against

the name of God and histeaching.2 And let those whose mas-

ters are of the faith have re-spect for them because they

are brothers, working forthem the more readily, be-cause those who take part inthe good work are of the faithand are dear. Give orders andteaching about these things.3 If any man gives different

teaching, not in agreementwith the true words o f ourLord Jesus Chr ist, and withthe teaching which is in

agreement with true religion,4 He has an over-high opin-

ion of himself; being withoutknowledge, hav ing only anunhealthy love of quest ion-ings and wars of words, fromwhich come envy, f ight ing, cruel words, evil thoughts,5 Bitter talk of men who, be-

ing evi l in mind and dead towhat is true, take the faith to

be a way of making profit.6 But true faith, with peace

of mind, is of great profit:7 For we came into the world

with nothing, and we are notable to take anything out;8 But i f we have food and a

roof over us, let that beenough.9 But those who have a de-

sire for wealth are falling into

danger, and are taken as in anet by a number of foolishand damaging desires, through which men are over-taken by death and destruc-tion.10 For the love of money is a

root of all evil: and some

whose hearts were fixed on ithave been turned away fromthe faith, and been woundedwith unnumbered sorrows.11 But you, O man of God,

keep yourself from theseth ings , and go after right-eousness, religion, faith, love,a quiet mind, gentle behav-iour.12 Be fighting the good fight

of the faith; take for yourselfthe life eternal, for which youwere marked out, and of which you gave witness in theeyes of all.

13 I give you orders beforeGod, the g iver of life, andChrist Jesus, who before Pon-tius Pilate gave witness to thefaith,14 To keep the word un-

touched by evil, clear from allshame, t i ll the revelation ofour Lord Jesus Christ:15 Which at the right time he

wil l make c lear, who is the

eternal and only Ruler, Kingof kings, and Lord of lords;16 Who only has life for

ever, l iving in l ight to whichno man may come near;whom no man has seen or isable to see: to whom be hon-our and power for ever. So beit.17 Give orders to those who

have money and goods in this

life, not to be lifted up inthe ir minds, or to put the irhope in the uncertain chancesof wealth, but in God whogives us in ful l measure allthings for our use;18 And to do good, having

    wealth in good works, being

quick to give, taking part withone another;19 Making ready for them-

selves a safe place for thetime to come, so that the true

life may be theirs.20 O Timothy, take good care

of that which is given to you, turning away from the wrongand foolish ta lk and argu-ments of that knowledgewhich is falsely so named;21 Through which some, who

gave their minds to it, havebeen turned away from thefaith. Grace be with you.
