For new activities, educational institutions usually experience financial crunch. Lion’s share of the

budget is taken away by on-going activities. Under these circumstances, alumni of the institutions come for res-

cue and contribute in developing newer facilities helpful to their juniors and the alma mater that are essential for

holistic quality education.

In order to establish a technology focused state-of-art B-School, Vinod Gupta donated US $ two million

to his alma mater IIT Kharagpur in the year 1990-91. This institution has been named as Vinod Gupta School of

Management. Ratan Tata gifted US $ 50 million to his alma mater Harvard Business School in 2010 to fund a

new project. In USA, Michael Bloomberg made a history by donating US $ 350 million to his alma mater John

Hopkins University in the year 2013. Anil and Vera Kriplani donated Rs. one crore to IIT Delhi in 2013 for Applied

Technology Research lab., and Seminar Hall. Alumni of IIT Mumbai annually contribute about Rs. 15 crore for

funding various projects. Alumni of BITS Pilani donate to their alma mater through online BITSAA International

Donation Fund. Alumni Association of BHU contribute through on-line Annual Giving Campaign. For the year 2013,

their target is US $ 300,000.

Besides these big contributions as mark of alumni’s gratitude to their alma mater, there are several

examples of modest contributions. Pantnagar alumni in the year 2010-11, contributed a high-tech Ambulance

and Intensive Care Unit to strengthen health care facilities. They also plan to replace all old books in library by

new editions, and construct an Alumni Guest House. Vineet Nayer, an alumnus of Campus School at Pantnagar

has contributed Rs. 1.5 crore for building an auditorium.

In western world, the system of donating liberally to their alma mater is an old tradition. In India, we see

sporadic examples in limited cases. With IT developed in a big way, it is now easier for the alumni to get united,

identify the requirements of their juniors at their alma mater, launch campaigns, collect funds, and monitor exe-

cution of the project. In the words of Vinod Gupta; “If we can do something to improve the lives of students

(juniors), they will never forget us”. At BIAS, new projects lined up for the attention of its alumni include a confer-

ence hall, an academic block, new workshop, and a boys hostel. Prof. B. S. Bisht
