Dear Foundation Family:

Family Fun

“Come one, come all! Prepare to be amazed!” This was the invitation from The Good Samaritans to join them Under the Big Top for this year’s Gala. Asusual, our family stepped up and answered the call. I was amazed by your generosity toward this joyous celebration that will impact the lives of the people Good Samaritan serves each and every day.

In this issue you will see family photos from the Gala, all of which bring oneword to mind: fun! We enjoyed cocktails and dinner, played skee ball, ate cotton candy, visited a palm reader, and kicked up our heels on the dance floor. All of this fun benefits the Good Samaritan Hospital Faculty Medical Center for Pregnancy and Women’s Health, along with annual support of theGood Samaritan Free Health Center and the Medical Education Research Fund.

Beginning on Page 11 we recognize those individuals, families, organizations, and businesses who are members of our Lifetime Giving Societies. We appreciate your leadership and commitment to Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation. You are an inspiration to us all.

To each and every family member, thank you for all you do to make a differencein the lives of our patients, their families, our future physicians and nurses, andour community as a whole. No matter the size, every gift and act of servicematters. It is your impact that, as they say Under the Big Top, is truly death-defying, astonishing, and spectacular!

Gratefully,

Charitable Gift Annuities:

THETIME ISNOW

Lower interest rates can be a bitter pill for individuals on fixed incomes. Is there a better alternative to traditional CDs or bonds? Certain types of gift vehicles actually do generate a higher fixed income. Charitable gift annuities currently offer a higher rate of return than almost all conservative investments. And they are NEvER subject to market fluctuations.

What Is a Charitable Gift Annuity?A charitable gift annuity is a way to make a gift to your favorite charity and still receive an incomefor yourself or others. It is a contract – not a trust – under which a charity, in return for a transfer of cash or marketable securities, agrees to pay a fixed sum of money for a period measured by one or two lives.

Payments from a charitable gift annuity are fixed from the outset and calculated by the age(s) of the annuitant(s). Payment size will neither increase nor decrease, no matter what happens tointerest rates or the stock market. In addition, you will be entitled to an immediate income taxcharitable deduction. Unlike other investment returns, a portion of your payment will be tax-free.

Who Might Benefit from a Gift Annuity? Most gift annuity donors are retired, want to increase their cash flow, seek the security of guaranteed payments, and would like to save on taxes. A charitable gift annuity could be right for people in any of the following circumstances:

•The interest rates on their CDs and other fixed-income investments have declined, and theywould like to increase their cash flow.

•They own appreciated stock or mutual fund shares and have considered selling some of the shares and reinvesting the proceeds to generate more income, but they have hesitated because they don't want to pay tax on the capital gain.

•They would like to count on fixed payments, which are unaffected by interest rates and stock prices and which they cannot outlive.

•They want to assure continuation of payments to a surviving spouse without the delay of probate proceedings.

•They would like to provide financial assistance to an elderly parent, a sibling, or other person in a tax-advantaged manner.

What Are Deferred Gift Annuities?Deferred gift annuity donors are often not retired, but are looking for secured payments in the future during retirement. With a deferred payment gift annuity, the annuitant(s) start(s) receivingpayments at a future time, the date chosen by the donor, which must be more than one year after the date of the contribution. As with immediate gift annuities, payments can be mademonthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually.

For more information on how you can establish a charitable gift annuity and receive a free illustration, please contact Kelly Rowland at 513.862.3787 or [email protected].

The primary role of a physician is to be a healer. For the Medical and Dental Staff at Good Samaritan Hospital, this role expands beyond the exam room or surgical suite. It alsomeans giving back to the hospital where they practice in orderto improve the quality of care, educate future physicians andnurses, and help the less fortunate.

The Medical and Dental Staff, which is comprised of all physicians and dentists who practice at Good Samaritan, has along history of philanthropy. “We have always been very goodat supporting the Foundation in any way we are able,” says Dr. Margaret LeMasters, who is in her second year serving asPresident of the Medical and Dental Staff. Every year, the Staffdonates funds from their membership dues to the Foundationto support a wide array of efforts.

The Staff’s support of Good Samaritan has been so generousover the years that in 2016 they entered the Sister AnthonyO’Connell Circle of Compassion for lifetime giving of morethan $1 million. Their direct contributions and support of TheGood Samaritans’ Gala have created positive impacts for areassuch as the hospital’s greatest needs, medical education, theTeam Member Emergency Fund, library services, Good Samaritan College of Nursing and Health Science, medical mission trips, community outreach, the Good Samaritan Free Health Center, and more.

As the Medical and Dental Staff is continually expanding theirimpact on medical education and patient care, they are embarking on a new initiative. In addition to their ongoing support, the Executive Committee voted in December, 2016 to approve a $100,000 pledge to create the Good SamaritanHospital Medical and Dental Staff Scholarship. This scholarshipwill enable Good Samaritan caregivers to further their education so they can continue the legacy of high quality, compassionate care for all.

The Foundation thanks the Medical and Dental Staff for theircommitment to and innovation in philanthropy. They exemplifythat the practice of medicine is more than an occupation; it is a calling to heal and to serve in any way possible.

Four years ago, we had a vision: to create a coordinated, multidisciplinary, patient-centered hub of compassionatecancer care that provided patients and families with the experience they want and deserve. Because of the generosity of our family of donors, Good Samaritan completed the first phase of this project and opened theCancer Center in 2014. This Center provides Medical Oncology infusion treatment along with genetic counseling, nutrition, nurse navigation, and other services.

In 2015 we embarked on the second and final phase of ourvision: Radiation Oncology. Philanthropic gifts again madethis dream possible, and fundraising was completed in2016. Now, the renovation is underway to increase ourability to treat more patients, create a multidisciplinaryhealing environment, and physically connect to the Cancer Center to create one destination for all cancer patients. With an estimated completion date of May, 2017,we look forward to celebrating the opening of the new Radiation Oncology Center with you, our donors, whomade this achievement possible.

Donor Impact Update

Radiation Oncology Renovation

A high-risk pregnancy can be an especially frightening time. However, families in the region know Good Samaritan is the best place to receive care for expectant mothers and babies. Women facing certain pregnancy challenges may be admitted to the Special Care Obstetrics (SCOB) Unit atGood Sam for a matter of weeks or even months.

Our goal is to have the SCOB Unit’s physical surroundingsmatch the superior level of care provided there.

HIGH-RISK HEALING Announcing the Special Care Obstetrics Unit Renovation

Renovation plans include:

• Conversion of all semi-private rooms to private rooms for every patient

• A family lounge complete with a dining area, kitchenette, and living room area

• Upgraded equipment, nurses station, and triage area

• Design updates including flooring, paint, and artwork

This will only be accomplished with philanthropic support. To find out how you can help, including naming opportunities, contact the Foundation at 513.862.3786 or [email protected].
