SUPPORT TODAY THAT ENSURES SUCCESS TOMORROW

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Every year at this time, I am reminded of the

enormous responsibility and challenge we

face in protecting and caring for the vulner-

able children, families and developmentally

disabled adults in our care. Little Flower’s

dedicated staff embrace and carry out this

mission daily. Doing so often entails setting

aside their own needs to care for others. It is

impossible to adequately thank them for their

commitment and hard work. As we pursue

our Mission we are mindful of the need to

strive for excellence in all operational and

financial matters. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards.

Little Flower has always put the needs of the children, families and developmentally disabled adults we

serve above all else. We incorporate four core values – respect, achievement, safety and responsibility

– into our daily efforts and give those in our care the tools and encouragement to change their lives.

Though undaunted in our commitment to provide responsive, effective and excellent services, Little

Flower has been significantly affected by the prolonged economic challenges facing government as

well as individual households. We have incurred increased costs for both mandated and non-mandated

fringe benefits for employees. Government rates for provided services have remained flat for the past

2 years, though the cost of delivering the services has increased. Regulatory demands have driven

expenses to an all time high and put additional demands on our staff and resources.

Despite these challenges, Little Flower continues to grow to meet the ever increasing and changing

demands for our services. We introduced a new program, Bridges to Health (B2H) a home and

community based Medicaid Waiver Program that offers fourteen different services from which a

plan is created based on the child and their family’s needs. In response to the growing need for

personalized residential housing for developmentally disabled adults we committed to opening

additional homes in the communities we serve, with homes in Queens, Brooklyn and Wading River

open in the last six months alone.

We are therefore extraordinarily grateful to our faithful donors who have generously supported

the agency to continue to provide critical and effective services. We could not do it without you.

Thank you!

TAKING THE PULSE OF LITTLE FLOWER

The goal of Little Flower is to deliver innovative, high quality services and programs to children,

families, and developmentally disabled adults in need. We strive to establish permanent

relationships for the children in our care by returning each child to his or her family, when

possible, or by placing them with a new loving family through adoption. We secure safe and

long-term living arrangements for our developmentally disabled adults so that they can have

fulfilling and gratifying lives. We provide support and education to our parents so that they can offer secure, nurturing

and loving homes to those we serve.

From July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011 Little Flower cared for:

CELEBRATING ABILITIES

Developmental Disabilities are physical or mental impairments that begin before age 22,

and alter or substantially inhibit a person’s capacity to do at least three of the following:

1. Take care of themselves (dress, bathe, eat, and other daily tasks)

2. Speak and be understood clearly

3. Learn

4.Walk/Movearound

5.Makedecisions

6.Liveontheirown

7. Earn and manage an income

It is difficult to define the limits of people with disabilities, as we continue to discover extraor-

dinary abilities within them. While people who have developmental disabilities face a more

challenging future than most, they still can enjoy a full and active life. What they need most is encouragement, under-

standing, and the willingness of others to help them maximize their opportunities for becoming part of the community.

Little Flower’s population of over 200 individuals with developmental disabilities is no different. Their abilities are as

varied and wide-ranging as their disabilities. As this unique population grows and the need for alternative housing and

care facilities increases, Little Flower’s commitment is unwavering.

that allow individuals to become fully integrated into community life.

Within the homes, each person has an individualized program to meet specialized needs and interests. The residential

and clinical staff assist individuals to learn daily living skills and to be as independent as possible. In addition, each

person participates in a day program activity or is employed to promote a sense of self-worth and productivity.

ALL FOSTER CARE IS NOT CREATED EQUAL

Research shows that young people in foster care are far

more likely to endure homelessness, poverty, compromised

health, unemployment and incarceration after they leave the

foster care system.

Little Flower’s goal is to ensure that the youth in our care don’t become a statistic.

We are committed to placing our children in loving and secure homes where they will be

nurtured and cared for in a manner that fully meets their needs. We monitor our place-

ments continually and strive to recruit high-quality caregivers as Foster Parents. Our

practical approach includes training for foster parents before, during and after a child is

placed in their home. Support is available through a variety of services at Little Flower to ensure

that the Foster Parent has what they need to create the best home for the youth in their care.

It takes a special person or persons to sacrifice the time, money, and most importantly the energy and

love that goes into nurturing a child – all the while knowing that it may be temporary. However, in

many cases, the placement of the right child in the right home, leads to a permanent placement and

a forever family.

As the foster care environment changes, Little Flower strives to meet the needs of the community by offering

specialized programs including the “Specialized Residential Treatment Program” in Wading River created to

respondtothespecialneedsofyoungsterswithmedicalandbehavioraldifficulties;“Mother/BabyFosterCare”

designed to keep teenage mothers and their children together in stable, supportive, foster home environments,

whileguidingthemtowardself-relianceandbecomingcontributingmembersoftheircommunities;the“Juvenile

Justice Initiative” which is an alternative to detention program designed to work with the whole family to keep

childrenintheirhome;and“PreparingYouthforAdulthood,”whichallowsyouthtoparticipateinfrequent

workshops designed to prepare them for the future including higher education, vocational skill development,

employment, positive relationship building, and household management.

“If you don’t love kids, don’t do it.” — Elnora Axson, foster parent who has raised more than 85 children in her home since 1988 – even adopting three.

“Every child is different, but every child needs a home.” — Mamie Green, foster parent

“The greatest gift someone can give a child is love and security,” said Grace Lo Grande,

executive director of Little Flower. “Striving to give the children we serve stability and support is at the very core of what we do.”

“Foster parenting does not always have a definitive timeline. In my view, fostering is about changing the lives of children, which can lead to lifelong connections.” — Mattie Simms, foster parent

TWO MEDIA CAMPAIGNS HELP TO BUILD AWARENESS OF LITTLE FLOWER THROUGHOUT NEW YORK CITY AND LONG ISLAND.

We’re grateful to Grandmaster Flash for the time

he dedicated to this effort. Our goal was to raise

awareness about the need for foster parents and

find safe loving homes for the children in our

care. Grandmaster Flash helped us do just that.

In2010,JUICEPharmaandLynnMacrone

graciously donated the design and creation of

an advertising campaign

that included more

than 1,000 subway car

posters citywide and

out Brooklyn and Queens.

NEW MEDICAID WAIVER PROGRAM INTRODUCED

In 2010, Little Flower introduced a new program serving Long Island chil-

dren and youth called Bridges to Health. This home and community based

programutilizesamenuof14servicestoprovideindividualizedcarefor

children and families in need. The goal is to keep children close to home

and support permanency placement planning. Services are voluntary and

families chose providers and work with case managers to create a plan that

is most appropriate for the individual’s needs.

Any child who meets the criteria is eligible for participation in B2H whether

they are part of the Little Flower foster care network or not. Some of the

servicesinclude:FamilyandCaregiversupportandservices,dayhabilita-

tion, prevocational services, planned respite, immediate crisis response

services, and adaptive and assistive equipment.

MUSIC THERAPY

THERAPEUTIC HORSEBACK RIDING

Music has the power to heal and that’s why Little Flower’s Music Therapy

program is so important to the well-being of the children in our care.

The directed use of music and music therapy is highly effective in developing

coping strategies, including understanding and expressing feelings of anxiety

and helplessness, supporting feelings of self-confidence and security, and

providing a safe or neutral environment for relaxation. Research results and

clinical experiences attest to the viability of music therapy even in situations

outside of traditional therapeutic settings. Music is a form of sensory stimulation,

which provokes responses due to the familiarity, predictability, and feelings of

security associated with it. Feedback from caregivers indicates that music

therapy sessions helped to develop a stronger sense of readiness to cope

with day-to-day stressors and potential future crisis situations.

Many of our population in Wading River participate in therapeutic horseback riding

at Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. This unique program brings about remarkable

benefits to our kids by stretching both mind and muscles.

Research shows that students who participate in therapeutic riding can experience

physical, emotional and mental rewards. Because horseback riding gently and

rhythmically moves the rider’s body in a manner similar to a human gait, riders

with physical disabilities often show improvement in

flexibility, balance and muscle strength.

Improvements in posture, balance, coordination,

muscle tone, confidence and self-worth are seen

almost immediately.

The sense of independence found on horseback benefits

all who ride. The therapeutic qualities of horseback

riding are recognized by many medical professionals,

including the American Physical Therapy Association

and the American Occupational Therapy Association.

business, philanthropy, industry and religious institutions

were on hand as Little Flow-

er honored the Sisters of the

Holy Family of Nazareth for

providing more than seven

decades of compassionate

service to Little Flower.

The evening highlights

included reminiscences from

alumni, staff and volunteers of

their experiences at Little Flower.

I was a foster child with special needs from the time I was an infant until I aged out. I had my challenges growing up in the system. Many of the Sisters at Little Flower were very encouraging and supportive and believed in me when I almost stopped believing in myself. — Arlene Burt, Alumni

I will never forget the fun times of visiting Sunday. I looked forward to it all month long and it helped me put one foot in front of the other until another visiting Sun-day rolled around. It also helped the siblings develop a bond and relationship. After the younger children were adopted and the older ones lived with relatives, we still kept in touch by letter and each summer we would spend a week or two with our sisters Casey and Maureen. — Kimberly McCormick Nowakowski, Alumni

It is people like you who truly make a difference to Little Flower as we continue to work toward our historic mission of helping children, families and developmentally disabled adults in need.
