This term Burnside High School
musicians have taken not just the city,
but the whole country by storm.
Two Chamber Music groups from the
school made it through to the national
fi nals in Auckland. All’Aperto players
were Andrew Robinson 13Rd, Alice
Morgan 12Ha, Han Sol Jeong 12Sh and
Jordan Renaud 13Wk. Grace Chia 13SY,
Chan Woo Park 12BB, Briana Walley
13KL, Robert Petch 10SO formed
Elektra. Hye In Kim 9WRa also played in
Auckland as part of a group with other
schools.
All’Aperto were then selected for the
fi nal round in the Auckland Town Hall
where they won the KBB Award.
The school’s Jazz musicians have
also been performing on the national
stage. Our Junior Jazz Ensemble,
Ella Dunbar-Wilcox, Matt Howes,
Hamish Smith, Josh Saville, Elliot Millar
all from 9WRa and Matt Kolf of 10So,
travelled to Wellington to take part
in the New Zealand School of Music
Jazz Festival. They gave two excellent
performances, one on the stage of
the St James Theatre and another in
the foyer cafe, to a highly appreciative
audience. Whilst in Wellington they
attended an inspirational masterclass
and played in a workshop with the
legendary jazz musician Bennie Maupin
(of the Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and
John Coltrane bands).
But perhaps the greatest success
was at the National Big Sing Finale
competition in Wellington. Under the
direction of Ms Susan Densem, Senior
Chorale, a newly-formed mixed voice
choir, won a coveted Gold Award,
while Burnside High School’s premier
girls’ choir, Bel Canto, gained fi rst place
with the Platinum Award for Supreme
Excellence. These choirs have worked
extremely hard this year with the help
of their student conductors Charlotte
Taylor 13Kl and Sophia Good 13Sy, and
accompanists Grace Chia 13Sy and
Seraphin Loo 13Rd.
Congratulations to all these outstanding
musicians.

Principal’s MessageKia Ora,
Ministry of Education’s
Announcement
The Ministry of Education’s
view about the future of
education in Canterbury
is that the extent of
damage to early childhood
education centres, schools
and tertiary facilities, and
the ensuing relocation of
people, means that the
education network cannot
be returned to its previous
state.
As you may be aware, the Ministry of Education has worked with
geotechnical and structural engineers to assess the state of land
and buildings on school sites across greater Christchurch.
This, along with information around roll change, has been
instrumental in informing their thinking around the potential
future shape of education within learning community clusters.
Fortunately Burnside High School’s geotechnical report indicates
we are in a good position; however due to another unrelated

problem (leaking buildings) there are
plans to upgrade or even replace
several school blocks in the medium
term future.
The proposal for our school is
minimal change, although following
the lead of the Ministry of Education
we will be working to support other
secondary schools and joining
cluster meetings with primary and
intermediate schools in our area to
work together to best meet the needs
of our students. We off er our support
for aff ected schools, and share with
them the sense of frustration and loss
that the announced changes will have
brought to their communities.
Other Business
I was delighted to note the successes
of our sports teams during the
recently held Tournament Week.
These refl ect real progress in terms of
sports results for the school’s teams
over the past few years. It also refl ects
the hard work and determination
of staff , students, outside coaches/
managers and parents working
together to represent the school.
Thank you!
One pleasing piece of feedback
I received from two of our teams
was how well the students were
presented, and the level of
sportsmanship they displayed. Some
of the uniform standards at school
however, leave a lot to be desired. I
would encourage parents to work with
the school to lift the overall standard
of uniform and personal grooming.
Mrs Sidaway has included some
advice re uniform in this newsletter for
your consideration and help.
I have also asked Deans and
Divisional Principals to speak with
students about improving the school
environment (litter is a particular
concern) and student behaviour
during break times and after school.
Perhaps the long (and often cold and
wet) lunchtimes have not helped in

Dancers Impress and EntertainOn 5 September, the Burnside High
School community was treated to the
second annual Dance Showcase. With
over 100 performers, this was the fi rst
time that students from Years 9 to 13
have all performed in the show.
The evening was a collection of
student works from most of the Dance
curriculum classes. There was an
impressively diverse range of items,
including Contemporary, Musical
Theatre, B-Boying and Bollywood
Dance genres.
A highlight of the evening was ‘Rise
Up’, a performance choreographed
by Year 13 student Olivia Hodgson for
her level 3 Dance assessment. This
choreography was a thought-provoking
and well-developed portrayal of the
Canterbury earthquakes. An array of
interesting production technologies
such as props, live music and video
encouraged a strong emotional
response from the audience.
This was a successful evening
thoroughly enjoyed by all. The students
should be exceptionally proud of their
outstanding performances.
P.T.A. Parents at Burnside High School
We have been entertained, educated and inspired by our
guest speakers this year. Senior Sergeant John Robinson
talked about alcohol, parties and techniques on teaching
our teens to drive. Reg Garters presented an insightful
evening on Father, Daughter and Family relationships.
Darryn Findlay updated parents on the fi ndings of the
committee who looked into how boys are achieving
academically at Burnside High and at strategies to help
lift their results. Jax Hamilton of New Zealand Masterchef
fame was an inspirational speaker and all who attended
the evening left feeling uplifted. Congratulations to the
two lucky winners who took home a copy each of “Jax
Cooks”.
The PTA has just established an annual grant for
extracurricular activities. Any student who is experiencing
fi nancial hardship can apply for funding to help cover
costs associated with trips, equipment etc. We are
funding this from the uniform shop profi ts. The Guidance
Department are administering this grant, and applications
should be made through Sue Dixon.
The Executive is seeking new members to join them and
get involved in planning events for next year. It’s a fun
and rewarding experience. Please email pta@burnside.

Our next meeting is Monday November 5th when Conan
Fee, Chair of the Board of Trustees, will be talking about
school matters, and we will discuss and vote on the
allocation of remaining monies from donations received
this year. We look forward to seeing you.
This year 110 students from Burnside
High School participated in the world’s
largest Mathematics competition

Burnside Builds Bridges — and
Engineers
In August eight Burnside High School students took part
in the Aurecon Bridge Building competition. The Year 10
team won second prize in the Christchurch Competition,
building a bridge which supported 26.5kg.
Luke Laddbrook, Jess Scarsbrook and Peter Norris all of
10Op won $1500 for the school’s Science Department.
The Year 9 team members were all from 9Wra: Andreea
Baluti, Hannah Khor, and Caryn Thomas.
The Big Band won a Gold Award
and took the title “Best Big Band” at
“JazzQuest”, held at CPIT Jazz School.
Hamish Smith 9WRa won the award
for “Best Bass Player”, an incredible
achievement for a Year Nine student
in a competition dominated by senior
students. Sam Dempsey 12Wu, Ryan
Halll 11Cp, Alice Morgan 12Ha and Ella
Dunbar-Wilcox 9WRa were all highly
commended for their work as soloists.
As a result of this win Big Band has
been invited to open the fi nal concert
of this year’s Christchurch Big Band
Festival, to be held on 22 October in
the Aurora Centre. The band will also
be performing at the Court Theatre on
the previous day as part of the festival.
Again Jazzbar proved to be a great
success. This year the event was held
at the Wigram Air Force Museum and
featured all our jazz musicians with a
number of special guests, including a
wonderful ballroom dancing display by
our very own Mrs Victoria Bradfi eld and
her husband, Paul.
For a second year in a row the
Burnside High School Combined
Concert Band won a Gold Award
at the Concert Band Competitions
in August. The Band is conducted
by Miss Renaud, with student
conductors James Buchanan 13KL
and Seraphin Loo 13RD. The band
also won prizes for Best Clarinet
Section and Best Saxophone
Section.

Congratulations to Nathan James
9SOL for his success in the
Canterbury-Westland Science Fair.
Nathan created a digital trolley
system that makes shopping at the
supermarket much easier. He created
two electronic systems and then
wrote an Android phone application.
Once the shopping list is loaded onto
the phone then the phone alerts the
user that one of the items on their list
is right next to them.
Sponsors, SLI Systems, were
so impressed with Nathan’s
achievements that he was invited
to present his project to their team
of 30+ Engineers. The meeting was
broadcast via webcam to Auckland,
Queenstown and the California offi ce.
Unsurprisingly, Nathan won fi ve prizes
at the Fair, including the Institute of
Electrical and Electronic Engineers
Prizes, the Institute of Engineering
and Technology Christchurch Prize,
the SLI Systems Award and the Year
9-10 Technology First Prize.
Meanwhile, Programmers in the
senior school were not to be outdone.
Logan Glasson 12Ha, Kuaganda He

in the New Zealand Programming
Competition in Auckland and came
top of the country in the schools’
category.

Burnside All BlacksThe front foyer of the Administration Block at Burnside High School now
proudly displays not one but two All Black jerseys, both lent to the school by
two Rugby World Cup Winners.
Ex-student Andy Ellis, winner of the 2011 Webb-Ellis Cup, and Assistant
Head of Physical Education, Warwick Taylor, a member of the victorious 1987
All Black World Cup team, are pictured with the jerseys.
Andy Ellis has also, of course, forged a reputation as a talented Landscape
Architect and in this role he is going to help Burnside High School with
the design of a garden that will serve as a memorial to the Canterbury
Earthquakes and the year that the displaced staff and students of Avonside
Girls’ High School spent with us in 2011.
As this newsletter is published the Burnside High School community is
conscious of the ongoing uncertainty that Avonside Girls’ High School
continues to face. We trust that a positive outcome is found soon.
