n The following text is for questions 21 to 23.
―Once upon a time a hawk felt in love with a hen. The hawk flew down
from the sky and asked the hen, ―Won’t you marry me?‖
The hen loved the brave, strong hawk and wishes to marry him. But
she said, ―I cannot fly as high as you can. If you give me time, I may learn
to fly as high as you. Then, we can fly together.‖
The hawk agreed. Before he went away, he gave the hen a ring. ―This
is to show that you have promised to marry me, ―said the hawk.
So it happened that the hen had already promised to marry a rooster.
So, when the rooster saw the ring, he became very angry. ―Throw that ring
away at once! Didn’t you tell the hawk that you’d already promised to marry
me?‖ shouted the rooster .The hen was so frightened at the rooster anger
that she threw away the ring immediately.
When the hawk came the next day, the hen told him the truth. The
hawk was so furious that he cursed the hen. ―Why didn’t you tell me earlier?
Now, you’ll always be scratching the earth, and I’ll always be flying above
you to catch your children,‖ said the hawk.
The curse seems to have come true.

The Jakarta Post, Bandung, After being isolated for more than 30
hours, a 37-year-old paperboy, SA, suspected of being infected with bird flu
died on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in the isolation room of Hasan Sadikin
Hospital in Bandung, West Java.
The spokesman for avian flu control with the hospital, Primal Sudjana,
said SA suffered respiratory failure on Tuesday and the team decided to
apply life support.
"We've done according to standard procedure [to handle bird flu
suspect] by using a ventilator and Tamiflu. Unfortunately, his condition was
too severe already,‖ Primal said.
According to the family’s statement taken by the team, SA along with
his wife and two children had the flu, but SA had the worst symptoms. SA's
wife said that SA had no record of direct contact with birds, but their
neighbors did have ducks.
Primal said that samples of SA’s blood and mucus had been taken and sent
to the Health Ministry's lab in Jakarta.

nSeparately, the hospital’s medical director, Rudi Kadarsyah, declined to
confirm SA’s cause of the death at this time.
Rudi said he was waiting for the lab results, noting that the team of doctors
only suspected the patient had contracted the bird flu virus, as he
demonstrated the symptoms of the disease.
―The physical symptoms were indicative of [bird flu] because he felt
pains in his lungs, other body organs and respiratory systems‖ he said as
quoted by tempo.co.
Last month, two residents of Tangerang who died at the Tangerang
General Hospital (RSUD) were also suspected of being infected with bird
flu. (riz)

n The following text is for questions 27 and 28.
One day I was sitting in the local library, I started to read a medical
encyclopedia that was lying on the table in front of me. The first illness I read
about was cholera. As I read the list of symptoms, it occurred to me that
perhaps I had cholera myself. I sat for a while, too frightened to move. Then, in
a kind of dream, I started to turn the pages of the book again. I came to
malaria. Yes, there was no doubt about it – I had malaria too. And I certainly
had hepatitis. And yellow fever. And so it went on. I read through the whole
book, and by the end I came to the conclusion that I had every illness. There
was only one illness I didn’t have – and that was housemaid’s knee.
I sat and thought, and I became more and more worried. I wondered how
long I had to live. I examined myself. I felt my pulse. At first, I couldn’t find it at
all; then, suddenly it seems start off. I looked at my watch to time it – it was
beating 147 times a minute. I tried to feel my heart. I couldn’t feel it. It wasn’t
beating. I stuck my tongue out and tried to look at it. I could only see the end
of it, but from that I was even more certain than before that I had yellow fever.

nI went straight to my doctor, who was a good friend of mine. ―What’s the
matter with you?‖ he asked. ―I have every illness in the medical
encyclopedia.‖ I told him how I read the medical encyclopedia. Then he
opened my mouth and looked at my tongue, and he felt my pulse, and he
listened to my heart. Then he sat down and wrote a prescription. It said:
• 3 good meals every day
• A two-mile walk every day morning
• Be in bed at 11 o’clock every night
• Don’t read medical books!
I followed the doctor’s instructions, and I am happy to say that I now feel
quite well again

n The following text is for questions 31 to 32.
Although gorillas look ferocious, they are really rather quiet apes.
They live in family groups in the thickest parts of the jungles.
A gorilla’s feet, hands, and wrinkled face are bare and black. His fur
may be short or long, depending on where he lives. The short-haired
gorilla lives in the hot, damp, tropical forests of western Africa, and the
long-haired gorilla lives in the cooler air in the high mountains of central
Africa.
A gorilla’s arms are so long; they almost touch the ground, even
when he is standing up! Some wild mountain gorillas weigh as much as
you, your father, and your mother all weigh together. At night the father
gorilla sleeps on the ground. But the mother and the baby gorillas sleep
in big nests of stick and leave on the ground, or in the lower branches of
trees, where they are safer from prowling animals.

A bird develops from an egg cell that is fertilized in the body of the
female. Inside the cell, this fertilized egg cell divides many times. The
cells form tissues, the tissues form organ that make up systems of
organs. Before the egg hatches, most of the organs, of the adult bird have
developed.
The development of embryo takes place after the egg leaves the
body of the mother bird. The time that passes after the egg leaves is laid
until it hatches is called the period of incubation. During incubation, the
parent birds keep the eggs warm, usually by covering them with their
bodies. In some species of birds, the incubation period is two weeks. In
others, it is longer till six weeks.

Some birds such as the killdeer, the bobwhite, and the chicken, are
well developed when they hatch. The young of these birds have feathers
and can run about and feed themselves shortly after they come from the
egg. But the newly hatched young of most birds are completely helpless.
Their eyes are still closed and they have few feathers. While the young
birds are in the nest, they grow rapidly in size, their eyes open, feathers
develop, and the birds get stronger. During this time, the baby birds need
a great amount of food. Usually both the parent birds devote all their time
to finding the food.
Perhaps you have seen robins nesting. The female usually builds the
nest in which he lays from three to five pale-blue eggs. The eggs are
incubated by the female and hatch, both parents find food for babies. The
young develop rapidly, and two weeks after hatching they are ready to
leave the nest. Have you ever seen a young robin soon after it has left its
nest?

nI have been thinking for a long time. How can I be clever at mastering a
language? All of sudden, a sort of novel idea comes to my mind. It is a good
dictionary what language learners need to have. Why is it so?
Firstly, a good dictionary can help you. When you learn a language, you are
actually learning words, thousands of words. All words are available in the
dictionary.
Secondly, a good dictionary also contains a lot of patterns of words or
grammatical patterns. You can look up the patterns in the dictionary.
Thirdly, a good dictionary is the best teacher. The reason of this is very
simple. When you find new words out of class or school, your teacher is not
always there to help you. Who else can help you there? That is the
dictionary.
Fourthly, a good dictionary can be a good friend anytime, anywhere
because you can carry and read it in the morning, in the afternoon, in the
middle of the night whether studying in the room, in the living room, out of
class, out of house or wherever you stay.
Thus, based on the facts above I can conclude that every language learner
must require a good dictionary.

nGlobalization is a social change formed by the increase of interrelation
among society and its elements and happens because of acculturation and
technology development
Globalization gives new nuance and wide impact to the immigrants in
different culture. World becomes more various in aspect of ethnics, race
and skin colour. Nowadays social growth brings about the cultural changes
which have pluralistic and cultural characters.
Globalization has positive effect if we can adapt better, by improving
the self quality and selective attitude to the foreign cultural adoption.
The positive of globalization can be seen in the change of the development
system. In this case, national development has given wide opportunity for
Indonesian society to get proper education.
In the change of life view, globalization expands the concept of the balance
between material and immaterial development.

nNevertheless, globalization results in some negative effects as well.
The society experiences cultural shock because they are not ready to
accept the foreign culture immediately. Globalization makes the value in
social life not ready to anticipate the changes happened in the community.
It may bring about cultural value destruction having been adopted by the
local society.
Good or bad, the changes that caused by the globalization must be
faced with selective attitude to receive the new culture and strong self-
ability to fight for it.

When author Nicholas Sparks sat down to write The Notebook, a tender
love story inspired by the enduring relationship of his wife Cathy's
grandparents, he wanted his readers to walk away with a renewed spirit of
hope.
"I'll never forget watching those two people flirt," he recalls. "I mean,
you don't see that very often. They’d been married 67 years, and yet they
still loved each other. I wanted to write a book about that kind of love. I
wanted people to know that unconditional love does exist."
So Sparks created The Notebook, the simple story of Noah Calhoun, a
soft spoken North Carolina outdoorsman who carried his love for the willowy
Allie Nelson with him long after their youthful romance had ended. He
paralleled Noah's silent passions with Allie's haunting thoughts—feelings
she could not escape even after she became engaged to another man. He
asked his readers to consider what it might mean if these relatively happy,
middle-aged people found their destinies once again overlapped.
The following text is for questions 44 to 46.

nHe presented a question all but universal in appeal: What would happen
if two people were given a second chance at the love of a lifetime?
Sparks deftly answers that question. But it's the inspiration drawn from his
real life grandparents that makes The Notebook more than just a novel of
flames reignited. The novel opens and closes with an elderly Noah Calhoun
reading aloud from his personal journals and "notebooks." And as he shares
the delicate details, the good with the bad, it's clear he is as enchanted with
Allie in old age as he was on the day they met.
"And that’s the legacy of The Notebook," according to Nicholas Sparks.
"When love is real, it doesn't matter what turns the road takes. When love is
real, the joys and possibilities are endless." — Reviewed by Kelly Milner
