‘PERIDOT’
THE BIRTHSTONE FOR AUGUST
The mellow & light green glow of the Peridot, has earned this lovely gemstone the title ‘The Evening Emerald’.
The name ‘Peridot’ is derived from
the Arabic word ‘faridat’ meaning gem.
Associated with love, loyalty, commitment & harmony, the stone is known to be the ideal gift for a couple’s 16th Anniversary.
As history has it…
Facts & Figures
Peridot is a gem variety of the mineral ‘Olivine’ , and is seen only in variants of green ranging from light green to shades of olive.
Most of the stones of the finest colour
come from Myanmar & Pakistan
Being fairly hard in nature, these are quite durable enough to set in fine jewellery.
The most expensive Peridots are sparkling lime-green without brown or yellow hues.
Peridots are therefore one of the few gems found in only one colour, with only a dash of yellow or brown in them!
Wear & Care
Rapid or uneven heat can cause peridot to fracture.
They are stable to light but is easily attacked by sulfuric acid, and less easily by hydrochloric acid. It can also be attacked over a long period of time by acid perspiration.
Warm, soapy water is the best method for cleaning this stone. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are not recommended.
Peridot is durable enough for jewellery wear but should be worn with some care.
So all those of you born in the month of August, adorn this ‘gem of the sun’ & stay augustine in life!
