Healthy Children-‐ Healthy Choices
• Choices need to be made by parents
• The truth of good informaCon helps us feel confident to give our children the best!
• There is never a beGer Cme to take an interest in your children’s health!
AGenCon Parents!!
Overwhelming evidence suggests most health condiCons have their roots in our childhood. Therefore we must look carefully at our
children’s health and give them the chance for 100% potenCal to
be well.
When does this start? At what Cme do parents take things into their own hands?
Trends In Health Care
• More visits to chiropractors and CAM pracCConers than convenConal medicine!
• Why? b/c an expressed need for more control and dissaCsfacCon with tradiConal treatment
• Mothers choosing CAM for their children more educated
• Most common CAM provider is the chiropractor!!
Importance Of GeSng Kids Checked!
• 60% of neurological development happens in the first year of life
• 90% of neural development happens by age 6. • Stressors on the body are cumulaCve in nature and can impair funcCon, development and adaptaCon.
• A child’s health history is very important!!
Physical Stresses
• Pregnancy – Vertex vs. Breech • Delivery • Growth paGerns and milestones • Posture and movement • Sports and injuries • Congenital abnormaliCes/chronic disease
By 3 months – hold head up securely, align eyes
By 4-‐7 months – develop extensor thrust
By end of first year – stand upright
Chemical Stress
• Dietary choices -‐ influence on microbiome from birth, role in brain health • Environmental influences/chemicals-‐ Allergens, pesCcides/glyphosate, GMO • MedicaCons-‐ anCbioCcs, OTC meds
EmoConal Stress • Oaen overlooked, invesCgaCng a child’s social adaptaCon is important to provide useful insight into their health and overall well-‐being.
• Importance of stress management techniques and providing tools for self-‐care
• Profound impact on mental health, digesCve health among others
The Kids ChiropracCc Check-‐up
• ROM • PalpaCon/joint movement
• Posture • Muscle Strength tesCng
• Ortho/Neuro tesCng • sEMG/Thermography
The Importance Of Proper Child AcCviCes, And Key Body
PosiCons • Belly Cme & head control • Key indicators of brain
development • These acCviCes help
decreases Cght flexor muscles and sympatheCc nervous system influence
• Improves focus and learning, reasoning and personality
Colic
• Rule of 3s • Incidence 8-‐49% of all babies, 50% resoluCon by 3months.
• RCT study showed posiCve changes in up to 94% of infants receiving chiropracCc care, oaen as quickly as within 2 weeks.
• Support for resoluCon by sCmulaCon of frontal lobe and balance of NS
• NutriConal recommendaCons for mom and baby
Breasieeding DifficulCes
• Newborn uses 6 cranial nerves and 22 bones, and 60 voluntary muscles for sucking reflex
• Consider birth trauma/ excessive force on neck during delivery
• Head posiCon, muscular dis-‐coordinaCon, TMJ and cranial bone displacement can play a role
• InvesCgate tongue Ce/lip Ce
OCCs Media • Children at risk because of Eustachian tube angle, size of Eustachian
• 50% infants have episode prior to 1 yoa • Educate on dietary influences and inflammaCon
• Role of chiropracCc is to focus on gentle neck adjustments to alter tone of tensor Veli PalaCni muscle and balance nerve system.
ConsCpaCon – Common?
• Up to 30% of visits to pediatricians
• At any age in a child’s life, stool frequency of less than three Cmes per week is considered abnormal. Most commonly seen between the ages of 2-‐4 yrs.
• Commonly at weaning, toilet training, and at school age.
• ConsCpaCon is defined as delay or difficulty in the passing of hard, someCmes large stools for longer than 2 weeks.
ConsCpaCon
• 4-‐30% of pediatric populaCon and up to 30% of pediatrician visits
• Avoidance of the BRAT diet in toddlers/add viscous soluble fiber sources
• Consider balancing of GI flora via probioCc • Abdominal massage • ChiropracCc evaluaCon of spinal areas with neurological influence on digesCve system and parasympatheCc NS
ConsCpaCon Causes ?? TradiConally believed to be an in-‐adequate fiber intake -‐ liGle evidence to support this.
Many infants and children do not respond to treatment, like disimpacCon via oral or rectal agents. Rectal agents are invasive and can be difficult to give.
Therefore -‐ the exact cause of consCpaCon in children is not known.
A variety of factors may influence gut moClity and consCpaCon, including the nervous system, hormones, diet, disease, medicaCon, and psychological factors.
Gut Balance And NutriCon
• The best nutriCon is a clean and natural innate nutriCon humans were always meant to eat.
• For kids it starts with breast milk. • ProbioCcs are very helpful for mom and child to consume. This helps maintain balance in both mom and child’s immune system.
• Vegetables, fruit, meat, complex sources of carbohydrates. A diet that ancient ancestors would have found and consumed.
• No processed foods. No sugars, salts, addiCves.
The Hunter-‐Gatherer Diet
Most biologically congruent with human health
Immune FuncCon And NutriCon
• As the greatest influence on immune funcCon is nutriCon and your nervous system, it is not surprising that 70% of your immune system cells are located in your gut.
• A healthy nutriCon creates a healthy gut environment. Then the immune system funcCons in balance. Not to inacCve and not over acCve.
“90% of the s,mula,on and nutri,on to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine”
Dr. Roger Sperry, (Nobel prize recipient for brain research)
A Great Brain, Nervous System, Muscle And Skeletal System – A How To Guide
Brain Development
• At birth most neural connecCons have not yet formed
• These connecCons are formed and refined as we age via – Movement – NutriCon – Environment – Experience – GeneCcs
• Keys to a healthy brain and muscle/skeleton system are movement that is full, pain free, and children with great co-‐ordinaCon, balance, and funcCon of their limbs, trunk, neck and arms.
• Our full child evaluaCon is a must for confidence that children are in peak health.
• Posture and the above points are directly correlated to the development of a healthy brain, intellectual development and social funcCon.
Brain, Nerve, Muscle And Skeleton Systems
The input areas of the brain are important to size and operaCon of the
output regions.
If a child does not have normal or proper motor development, we expect that the funcCons of cogniCon and behavior would be delayed in development.
In turn a child’s motor skills helps develop their non-‐motor skills!
Helping Kids Grow Brains
Sports And Childhood Concussions
• Concussions are very common and do not require loss of consciousness for diagnosis
• All concussions are now considered forms of mild traumaCc brain injury
• Children are more suscepCble and usually take longer than adults for recovery
• While most concussions and the related symptoms clear up in 2-‐3 weeks, a significant number of concussions take up to 1 year to resolve fully.
Concussion Care?
• Immediate 24 hours of complete rest if any (SCAT 3 Child or Parachute Canada Guide) concussion symptoms are noted aaer injury
• Following assessment by a chiropractor or medical physician, a guide to returning to regular acCviCes like school and sport is given.
• Neck injury is common in childhood concussions and if chiropracCc care is combined with rest – recovery is much faster. The neck needs to be assessed!
Common Posture Concerns: Backpack Health
• Carrying a heavy load unevenly or improperly can result in poor posture causing muscle strain, headaches, neck and arm pain, and even nerve damage.
• More than 50 per cent of young people experience at least one episode of low back pain by their teenage years
• 14% of kids with asymptomaCc disc degeneraCon!!
How Do We Help?
Backpack Modifica, ons: Day to Day Changes: • Exercise every day • Avoid slouching/hunching
when siSng. Keep shoulders squared!
• Stretch before and aaer sports, and aaer each hour of siSng esp. with media
• Sleep on your side or back! • Get adjusted!! • Manage emoConal stress! • www.straightenupalberta.com
Other pediatric concerns….
• Asthma • Enuresis/BedweSng • Headaches • Cerebral Palsy • ADD/ADHD • AuCsm • Concussion/Sports injuries • Scoliosis
