MARCHING AT 50 - JOURNALISM COURSEAT BHARATIYA VIDYA BHAVAN
mentioned Shri N.S. SridharMurthy, Journalism courseCo-ordinator, BVB. “What isspecial about this school ofjournalism is that it equipsstudents with practical knowledgewhich is essential to work in thefield,” informed well-knownjournalist Ranganatha Rao whohas also been a part of this Schooland whose efforts culminated insetting up of Kannada mediumwing of the school in 2000.
Reading the course name inKannada, he lamented, “theequivalent word to journalism in

Kannada should have actuallybeen Patrika Vyavasaya insteadof Patrikodyama as the field isnot meant to be a udyama(business). But unfortunatelytoday’s journalism is becomingmore of a business.”
In the words of Shri.Siddaraju, Chairman, KarnatakaMedia Academy: “we, asjournalists and readers, areundergoing a crisis of scholarshipand confidence in this era of fastand breaking-news journalism.”According to him, in manynewspapers the pages are beingdecided not by the editorial butby the department of circulation.“When getting advertisementsby hook or crook becomes thehidden agenda of the media, quality of news getscompromised. We should notforget that we are actuallycomprising on the sensibilities of
the reader,” added RanganathaRao.
In the veteran’s opinion, thetime has come to ‘rethink’ aboutthe trajectory journalism which isguiding today’s media. One wayto instil ethics in the students ofjournalism is “to begin exercisesthat observe and review and towidely read newspaper columnsand hear popular All India Radioprogrammes of the 80s and 90s,”he suggested.
After the speeches, students of previous batch sharedtheir experience during theircollege days. Director of BVBH.N. Suresh distributed the markscards and diploma certificates tothe successful students.
