  • Notes for Chapter Five by Jaydvaita Swami

    As with the first four chapters of Bhagavad-gt As It Is, apparently rla Prabhupda himself typed chapter five. The Bhaktivedanta Archives holds only one manuscript for the chapter. Judging from my scanned copy, the manuscript appears to be a carbon copy of an original now lost.

    The first page of the chapter is marked Page 148, the last Page 169. The manuscript is complete, except that it is missing page 153, which would have begun in the midst of the purport for text 7 and ended within the purport for texts 8 and 9.

    The typewritten text, though in a few places somewhat faint or smudged, is legible throughout.

    Every page of the manuscript has some amount of editing, most likely done by Hayagrva Dasa. Although the editors revisions sometimes make the underlying text difficult to see, the original words are almost always able to be discerned. The editing is not thorough, but much of it seems to have been incorporated, further refined, in the published book. There is no sign of editing for Sanskrit.

    This manuscript, like all the other Gt manuscripts in the Archives, was available for me to consult for the second edition.

    The reverse side of the pages is informative. For seven of the pages the reverse side is blank (pages 148, 149, 152, 154, and 167 through 169). But the other pages were typed on the reverse of already printed pages (for which scanned images are included at the end of this file).

    Page 150 was typed on the back of a form letter inviting people to become tentative members of ISKCON and be placed on a mailing list. The invitation bears no date. The reverse of page 151 records the minutes of the first meeting of the Trustees of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, held on August 8, 1966. So that gives the earliest date when the purport to text 3 (which appears on that page) could have been typed. Six pages were typed on the back of a press release, dated October 11, 1966 (pages 155 through 157, and 163, 165, and 166). We can assume, therefore, that text 11 (appearing on page 155) was typed after October 11.

    Six pages (158 through 162, and 164) were typed on the back of fliers advertising a program to be held at Judson Hall in New York City on November 15 (1966). If we assume that Srila Prabhupada, always careful not to waste, would not have used these sheets to type on until after the program, November 15 marks the earliest possible date for text 15 (starting on page 157 and ending on 158).

    From what we know of the steady pace at which Srila Prabhupada worked on the book, that his work on this chapter would have stretched out for three months seems unlikely. A more likely assumption is that he wrote the entire chapter in October and November (if not all in November itself).

  • Since a transcription for a dictated part of Bhagavad-gt As It Is beginning with chapter 8, text 4, is dated December 27, 1966, he must have completed chapters five through seven sometime between November 15 and late December. All this assumes that the manuscripts for these chapters are Srila Prabhupadas originals, not retyped copies. I consider this likely.

    The red revisions seen in my copy of the Gt were all put there by me, but not all of them are mine. For the technical changes made to the transliterations and word meanings, and to Sanskrit in the purports, I was transferring revisions made separately by the BBTs Sanskrit editors, mainly Gopparadhana Dsa. Changes to the word meanings made purely for the sake of English, however, were mine.

    At various places in the book, the composersthat is, the devotees who did the typesettingleft notes showing where they began or left off their work. Asdd stands for Aa-sakh Dev Ds (the American Aa-sakh, not the Aa-sakh from Britain), mdd stands for Mamat Dev Ds, and Duhkha for Dukhahantr Dev Ds.

    Matsya Avatra Dsa, a student of Gopparadhana Prabhus, contributed the yellow sticky notes for the word-for-word meanings. Matsya Avatra teaches Sanskrit at the rmad-Bhgavata Vidypt ham (the BBTs Sanskrit school at Govardhana) and is compiling the schools textbook on rla Jva Gosvms grammar. He was not involved in editing either edition of Bhagavad-gt As It Is.

    But although the second edition restores lost material, clearly I misplaced "in every respect." Coming after "helps one," its placement would have been equivocal: Would the intended meaning have been "helps one in every respect" or "in every respect control the senses"? So I moved "in every respect" to a place where it has only one meaning -- but I chose the wrong place. The right way to preserve Srila Prabhupada's intended meaning would have been this: "which in every respect helps one control the senses and conquer the influence of desire and anger." This correction will be made in future printings.
