When BMW introduced the 32Oi to the United S t a t e s in l a t e 1976, i t was adve r t i s ed a s the successor to the car t h a t s t a r t e d a c u l t . For many in t h e BMWCGA (BMW Car Cult of America), the 2002 was t h e i r f i r s t BMW experience, fo r many the only BMW exper­ience . May's DER BAYERISCHE r e f l e c t s on the 2002. J u n e ' s i ssue i s planned around the c l u b ' s sp r ing tou r on some of V i r g i n i a ' s e x c i t i n g back roads . April Meeting News There were some interesting revelations at the April meeting. Apparently because of the federal crackdown on imported quartz lights (bright but illegal), replacements are getting hard to find One club member istrying to get BMW to level his car... claims it leans to the front left at rest. Expect follow-ups on these topics.

Las t month DER BAYERISC-E repor ted the pressure i s on s t a t e s t o c lean up auto emiss ions . Maryland's General Assembly d id approve a measure au tho r i z ing the s t a t e motor vehic le admin i s t r a t i on to s e t up an emissions inspect ion program. The inspec t ions could begin as e a r l y as J u l y , 1980. Those of you Marylanders with "European" tuned BMWs...stay tuned for d e t a i l s of emissions i n s p e c t i o n s .

The Car That Started a Cult *FOR MANY, THE BEST BIMMER (This coming Ju ly w i l l mark the t h i r d a n n i ­versary of the end of 2002 product ion. On the second anniversary , the following s t o r y on the 2002 aDpeared in the BOSTON 3IMMER. A BMWCCA founder and ROUNDEL Technical Ed i to r , Michel Potheau, prepared the r epor t . )

To recount the saga of the 2002, we must go back to i t s l i t t l e b r o t h e r , t h e 1600. The 1600 i s an older model, having come about f i r s t in 1966. The ea r l y 1600 as most of us know i t , was ca l l ed the 1600/02. P r io r to and s imul­taneous with i t s production was a b u l k i e r version of the same c a r , the 1600 (no s l a sh 02 a f t e r i t s name).

The 1600 was a b u l k i e r and roomier c a r . I t looked l i k e an 1800 or 2000 to most people . There were many s u b t l e d i f f e r e n c e s . Anyhow, the 1600/02 got the "2" to d i s t i n g u i s h i t and t h i s represented the f ac t t h a t i t had 2 doors , no t four .

In 1968 BMW decided to s tu f f a l a r g e r motor into the c a r , a 2 - l i t r e one. The new c a r was to be the 2000/2 but people t e l l me

when you say i t s name in German i t comes out "2002". Also, the symmetry i s kind of n e a t .

The 1968 2002 i s a q u i t e d i s t i n c t i v e ca r . As with a l l BMW models t h e r e was an e a r l y and l a t e version of the same model, a p a r t ' s man nightmare. The l a t e r , updated vers ions were introduced a f t e r the European ca r shows and hence became a v a i l a b l e in the U.S. only in March, or the middle of our model year . The 1968 was r e a l l y a reworked l600 . The only d i f f e rence was i t had a tachometer. Actu­a l l y the f i r s t 300 or so d i d n ' t . Ear ly ones a l s o did not have sway b a r s . The co lor choices were red, s i l v e r and whi te , while a t the same time the 1600 came in about 9 bas i c c o l o r s .

Emission con t ro l s in the ca r were b a s i c , a smog pump, and d i v e r t e r valve (gulp valve to the cognescen t i ) . I t became dubbed the gulp valve because when i t f a i l e d i t went gulp, gulp, gulp . When the owner went to the p a r t s counter and was t o l d i t cos t $37, he a l s o went gulp , gulp , gulp . In t r u t h , i t was a General Motors p a r t used o r i g i n -

BMW 2002 sQPally ^ o r 1965 California version mid-sized

cars . The wri ter of t h i s a r t i c l e wi l l take credit for lowering the price to $9 in an early version of the BIMKER by obtaining the GM part .

The drive l i ne on a 1968 was somewhat unique in that i t is the only 2002 to use the long neck di f ferent ia l and a driveshaft with r e ­placeable U-joints instead of a CV jo in t as the l a t e r models used. Weak points in the car were the half shaft boots and the U-joints which often d idn ' t get the service required.

A l a s t subtle difference between the 1600 and the 2002 was that the 2002 had recl ining seats and the 1600 did not .

There were few changes in 1°6°. Most of the changes were the resu l t of federal l eg ­is la t ion. Again, there was an early and a l a t e version of the car . The early ones had the 3 finger clutch l i k e the 1968's and a six bol t flywheel. However, unlike the '68»s, a l l of the '69's had hydraulic clutch linkage. A problem which plagued the ear ly 1969's was that the flywheel (s ix bol t) was heavier than the 1600 one and the holes in i t were larger than the bol ts holding i t t o the crankshaft. This resulted in an in­credibly expensive repair , ^he flywheel would walk on the bolts and elongate the holes in i t and often s t re tch the bol t s and damage the crankshaft.

Except for a few minor subt le t ies l ike dif­ferent carpets and different trim rings on the 2 piece hubcaps, the early '69 's were identical to the '68 ' s . The '69 's delivered after January, 1969 were, however, sub­s tan t ia l ly different . Federal regulations required head res ts and side reflectors on the front of the car. Also, a different seat bel t was used. Other changes were part ly by regulation and part ly by evo­lu t ion. The regulations for the f i r s t time considered the unladen weight of the car and that brought about some changes.

The clutch set up was changed subs tant ia l ly . £k l ighter flywheel and a diaphram (self­- a d j u s t i n g ) clutch were introduced. This

greatly reduced the weight of the clutch. *he l a t e '69 's also brought some different paint schemes a t the expense of sore of the ear l ier ones. There was also a change

in Review in the in te r ior color only for the' 2002. Like­wise, some of the colors were s t r i c t l y for the 2002, which is why you never see a l e g i t ­imate Colorado 1600. The f i r s t BMW metallic paint problems were developing. 1968's Polaris, the only metall ic imported, darkened incred­ibly in j u s t a few months and resulted in a re-formulated paint for 1969, called Polaris Neu. The two new 1969 metall ic paints devel­oped the i r own problems by 1971 or so.

In 1969, the long-neck d i f ferent ia l and U-joints in the half-shafts were eliminated. BMW introduced CV jo in ts (no maintenance) and eliminated the replaceable U-joints in the driveshaft. The short neck di f ferent ia l was cheaper to produce but had about K$ the r e l i a b i l i t y of the long neck uni t . Any­one who has watched IM3A RS racing has no­ticed that the teams using the long neck units never had a fa i lu re , whereas the short neck units lasted about one race. Nick Craw once remarked tha t he had a d i f ferent ia l worth about $10,000 in the "6U" car.

Although some federal regulations were ob­noxious, others were beneficial . The brakes on the '69 were far superior in design, although no be t t e r in stopping the car. They u t i l ized a double c i r c u i t system with twin pistons in the front ca l ipers . These used a larger front brake pad. At the same time, the rear brake diamier was unchanged.

The automatic was introduced. I t was an unreliable unit prone to fai lure a t 50,000 miles. '69 2002s also had day-night mirrors. 1600s did not.

•Tinted glass was f i r s t introduced on the la te '69 models. So were one-piece hubcaps. The 1969 hubcaps had a frosty finish that peeled off quickly.

When the f i r s t 1970's were born some changes were apparent even to complete neophytes. The head res ts were dif ferent . There were more new paint colors, ^he front sidemarkers were shorter. The direct ionals assumed their bulging protuberant look. Rear side-markers were illuminated. The seat b e l t and shoulder harness became a spider web, adjustable only by using the r ight swear words. The steering wheel and dashboard padding were changed. After the failure of the frosty one-piece hubcaps, new shiney

The 1970s Bring More BMWs ones were introduced. Also, sway bars , a mandatory option in 1969, became standard equipment.

1970s used a different cylinder head—bear­ing the casting 121ti . In t ru th , i t was nearly identical and serious (racer) engine builders have had diff icul ty noticing a dif­ference. The old 121 and 121ti heads are fully interchangeable.

The price tag was also higher than the pre ­vious y e a r ' s . Then again, any one of us would be happy to buy a new BMW now for under $li,000.

Heated rear windows were introduced as a limited ava i lab i l i ty option. There were other changes l ike a vapor recovery system for the gas tank and other federally man­dated changes.

In 1971 there were no real mechanical changes a t a l l . A ni trous ixide l i ne was added to the pollution control system, but i t d idn ' t change performance. There were several new colors . Several old ones were phased out.

In l a t e 1971, no automatics were imported. Problems with the transmissions for several years forced the decision, which was no doubt assisted by sagging sa les .

The console and other controls in the car were changed dramtically. The l a t e '71s used the turnsignal s ta lk for a wiper switch as well . Heated rear windows became more common and i t s switch location was changed. Heater controls were more complicated, the hazard warning switch was moved, and the dashboard was made from a 3 to 2 piece affair .

In l a t e 1970 and early 1971 most of the cars had black spoked steering wheels which were lea ther covered. These wheels had been used on the 2002ti, a European version with twin carbs. However, in 1971, the factory making the p las t ic wheels was closed down for the be t te r part of the year by a s t r i ke . Hence, the leather-covered wheels were substi tuted.

The front' bumper brackets were changed, ^hey res is ted towing damage s l ight ly be t te r than the ea r l i e r ones but the oarts remained in­terchangeable. Seat be l t adjustment was improved s l igh t ly .

Late 1971s were dramatically different , "Vy had a different transmission. This marked the beginning of output flange fa i lure . Actually, there were l a t e and very l a t e '71s. The very l a t e ones h i t U.S. shores in May. They had the now familiar rubber moldings on the bumpers and the side of the car . Finally, the seat bel t mess was straightened out. Retractable bel ts were introduced. The only way to t e l l a la te 1971 from an early •72 was that the »71s did not have the seat be l t buzzer and the reminder panel on the top of the dash board.

In 1971, the speedometer gained a 1/10 mile d i g i t . Also, a very limited number of five speeds sneaked into the country. However, the then importer would not honor an order for them and in an interview denied that any five speeds had h i t U.S. shores.

tii model With the 1972 model...an engine option, the " t i i " was introduced. The fuelie was more expensive and much faster . I t had larger front brakes and larger rear wheel cylinders, Also, on the dash was aclock. Other than those features and a s l ight ly heavier clutch, the cars were identical in every respect. Early t i i ' s , a few hundred, had a 3*b5 rear end rat io which gave them a higher top end.

To follow the t i i to i t s end in 19 7h, in 1973 the p las t ic manifold trumpets were changed to a more rel iable aluminum unit tha t res is ted blowing the "o" rings out. In 197U, a new dis t r ibutor was in order to meet emission controls. '7hs were slower than the i r ear l ier counterparts mainly because of increased weight.

3ack to the 1972 2002. The instruments underwent a facial with the numbers slimmer and more pleasing to the eye. Again, in June a l a t e version was avail-^k able. I t had a 2 barrel carburetor and ™ more emission controls. I t was dif­ferentiated from early f73s by differ­ent bumper brackets. Also in 1972, the

to the Drivers of the World g r i l l e s were blacked out using a m a t e r i a l which did n o t fade as r e a d i l y . The 1972s were intended t o run on r egu la r ga so l i ne , but few did so s a t i s f a c t o r i l y , due in p a r t to a lowering of the octane by the big o i l companies.

The 1973's f ront bumper ove r r ide r s were shor te r and the bumper was fu r the r ou t . Likewise, the r e a r bumper was extended. The f ron t bumper bracke ts were much more s u b s t a n t i a l and "Y" shaped, ^he hea ter con t ro l s on the dash were i l lumina ted . The emission c o n t r o l s changed s l i g h t l y from the '72 2 b a r r e l . You ' l l f ind t h a t i f you ' r e shopping for a used 2002, a good c lean 7 3 commands a s t rong p r i c e , and with good cause . I t i s about the n i c e s t example (except for a '67 1600) of the 2 door BMW.

1973 a l s o brought s l i g h t l y d i f f e r e n t co lor uphols tery and d i f f e r e n t s e a t cushions . A rubber pad was added to the t ransmiss ion tunnel to prevent scuffing of the c a r p e t s .

197U was a tu rn ing p o i n t , downhil l , for the 2002. Large pro tuberant bumpers were added as a e s u l t of f ede ra l r u l e s . (Such bumpers prove very e f f ec t i ve for r e s i d e n t s of such crowded a reas as Washington, D.C.) The g r i l l and t a i l l i g h t s were r e s t y l e d . Again, the yea r ly dose of increased emission c o n t r o l s . The ca rpe t s became one p i ece , shrunk to f i t the car—a r e a l pain in the t a i l for neat r e a r speaker i n s t a l l e r s . The sea t knobs were d i f f e r e n t , as were the tu rn s igna l s and wiper c o n t r o l s . The tu rn s igna l s nurved to the l e f t of the s t e e r i n g column. A new s t e e r i n g wheel was added, p a r t l y as a r e s u l t of f edera l r u l e s .

Some l°7h automatics were i n t e r e s t i n g . For a time they a l l had mag wheels , which, com­bined with the r i d i c u l o u s p r i c e for the au to ­matic t ransmiss ion , made them more than a thousand d o l l a r s more expensive than U speeds. The mag wheels were u s u a l l y i n s t a l l e d a t ran­dom, but a computer programing screw up a t the fac tory d i c t a t e d t h a t they a l l go on a u t o ­mat ics .

The Final Generation of 2ers In 197k9 heated r e a r windows and t i n t e d g lass became standard mandatory " o p t i o n s . " The i n ­strument panel was worsened by the add i t ion of p l a s t i c wood. The s e a t uphols te ry became a ma te r i a l t ha t brea thed, r e l i e v i n g p e r ­s p i r a t i o n somewhat. The '7U headres ts were s t i l l somewhat unmanageable with the b a r s s t r e t c h i n g to the ou t e r edges of the s e a t s . The headres t contour and mate r i a l was changed to match the s e a t s .

T he '7Us had wider 5-inch wheels, with a new appearance. A smal le r , l i g h t e r ( l e s s durable) c lu t ch was used. A l a r g e r gas tank was i n ­troduced because of poorer gas mileage. '7Us got 2ii-25 mpg, '73s 27-32 mpg. The wiper b lades were blacked ou t , t oo . Required sea t b e l t i n t e r lock was introduced. That was a r e a l d inosaur , s ince on almost every '7k I ' v e seen i t ' s dismantled. A new t r a n s ­mission output flange was added, ending the f lange f iasco of years p a s t .

In 197U, a l o t of the ca rs had f au l t y en ­g ines . A new cy l inder head design was introduced in l a t e 1973, the E-12 head which had l a r g e r in take valves and a l a r g e r combustion chamber. That g r e a t l y reduced compression. (Undoubtedly p a r t of the emission c o n t r o l e f f o r t . ) The-'71* year saw BMW import a l o t of foreign l abo r to t h e i r f ac to ry . The r ings were im­proper ly clearanced in a l o t of *7Us, caus ­ing excessive o i l consumption. Surgery was often requi red while s t i l l under warranty .

In s h o r t , 197b was not a very good year for BMW. To summarize, the i n t e r i o r was cheapened, the ca r s were slower and more prone to f a i l ­ure than in previous y e a r s .

1975 brought more severe emission con t ro l s and with them the infamous thermal r eac to r which t r i e d to choke t h e very l i f e out of the su ­perb engine. Performance was a t an a l l - t i m e low. The ca rs run w i l l i n g l y on regular gas . Even with exce l l en t maintenance, the engines have a much sho r t e r l i f e expectancy.

The 1975 t a i l p i p e e x i t s from the cen te r of the r e a r . (The chrome extension i s often burned off by the ther^ial reactor.) Also, the head­r e s t s a re improved. A r e l ea se button and pos t s nea re r the cen te r f i n a l l y made them

workable. (Sea ts a l s o had more l a t e r a l sup™ p o r t . ) A new s e a t co lo r was introduced as were more pa in t co lo r s than in any previous year . Many co lors were r e t i r e d . Also added were i n t e r m i t t e n t wipers .

1976 was a g r e a t yea r . The emission con t ro l s were reworked l a r g e l y as a r e s u l t of lower compression new cy l inder head and a re turn to f l a t topped p i s t o n s . The thermal reac tor and EGR l i n e s were removed.

The 1976 engine ran smoother than other years using t h e 2 b a r r e l ca rb . The semblance of performance re turned because of a change in r ea r end gearing—from a 3.6U to 3.90 r a t i o . That meant you c o u l d n ' t go as f a s t a t the top end, bu t you got the re f a s t e r . ( I t a l so decreased gas mi leage . )

The 1976's included the option of new corduroy sea t s and beau t i fu l new c a r p e t ­ing . Due t o t h e r epos i t i on ing of the gas tank, they hald about \ gal lon more gas than the '75s with the i d e n t i c a l tank.

(S tee r ing wheel rims had a molded g r a in . ) Late '76s had a d i f f e r e n t hand brake l e v e r . I t conforms to t h e shape of your hand. As with most of the improvements made over the y e a r s , i t w i l l f i t e a r l i e r models.

1976 2002s a r e q u i t e d e s i r a b l e to own. They a r e smooth, burn l i t t l e o i l and have few gremlins lu rk ing within them. (As the l a s t year in product ion , they a r e a l so c o l l e c t o r s ' i t ems . )

So much for the evolut ion of the 2002. I t w i l l be for many people the only BMW they w i l l ever own and second to the 733i the bes t one b u i l t . The 2002 h i s t o r y traced here has been s t r i c t l y for U.S. version ca r s and has omitted any d iscuss ion of t u r ­bos , tour ing models, t i models, and Cab­r i o l e t s . In many cases , U.S. cars were the f i r s t t o spor t a p a r t i c u l a r change, s ince they make up such a l a rge percentage of BMW s a l e s . Many changes were continuous, producing e a r l y / l a t e vers ions of cars in a p a r t i c u l a r model yea r .

For some time now I have been rece iv ing my copy of DSR BAYSRISCHE severa l weeks a f t e r i t was publ ished. V i r t u a l l y every monthly meeting has long s ince passed by the time I rece ive my i s s u e . But I never was p a r t i ­c u l a r l y concerned u n t i l s eve ra l days ago, as I had assumed tha t everybody's was l a t e .

I received the March issue 2 days ago on A p r i l 2 . That s t ruck me as odd, s ince I had recognized the cover of t h a t i s sue as having been on Dave Toy's desk a t Autoy a week before . I then placed a c a l l for one of the adve r t i s ed items in the c l a s ­s i f i e d s only to find out they had been sold about two weeks ago when he and most o ther people got t h e i r i s s u e s .

Since i t i s h ighly u n l i k e l y t h a t t h e U.S. pos ta l s e rv i ce r equ i res 2-2^ weeks to ca r ry mai l between Arl ington and Balt imore, there must be some o the r problem .

The March BAYSRISCHE was mailed March 13. We use bulk r a t e 3rd c l a s s mail in which a l l i s sues a r e mailed a t once, bundled into s tacks accord­ing to z i p code d e s t i n a t i o n s . This year we s e t up a schedule designed to ge t t h e Bayerische to club members beforethe 3rd Tuesday of each month.
