1. GEOGRAPHICAL DATA1.1 SFJ is situated to the SW coastline of
Greenland in the inner part of the fjord, Sondre Stromfjord. The surrounding area is mountainous with spotheights up to 2362ft. The Greenland icecap begins about 25nm to the E of the AD.
1.2 SFJ has high terrain on both sides of the APCH path to RWY 09. Terrain affects circling and TKOF.
2. WEATHER 2.1 SFJ is seldom closed due to ceiling and
visibility limitations. The restriction factor is the wind. Predominant wind is E, 85% true 060/06kt and generally sky clear. 10% true 240/10kt and lower clouds to be expected, however flying/landing conditions generally ok. Strong winds from a S or NW direction may cause moderate to severe turbulence. Warning issued by MET office. Remember that forecasted wind directions are true and that magnetic variation at SFJ is 32W.
2.2 Temperatures. Winter season OCT-DEC down to -30C, JAN/FEB can be as low as -40C and MAR/APR down to -25C. At those low temperatures, -25C and below, ice fog may form. Summer season MAY-AUG will keep a temp up to +20C.
2.3 If SFJ weather is marginal keep a close check on weather at alternative airports, changes at these can be very rapid. Keflavik forecaster can be called.
