752development and fulfilment of the part can only proceed from its com-plex interrelationship and unfolding within the larger whole: 46 This isnot seen as resignation or self sacrifice but rather as a positive affirma-tion of the "right" of all beings to live and flourish. In this respect, eco-centrism encourages a certain kind of person or a certain ideal ofhuman virtue. As Thomas Hill has suggested, indifference to nonsen-tient nature, while not a moral vice, is nonetheless "likely to reflecteither ignorance, a self-importance, or a lack of self-acceptance whichwe must overcome to have proper h u m i l i t y . ~'47The kind of ecocentric approach I defend is exemplified by the increas-ingly influential environmental philosophy known as "deep" or, morerecently, "transpersonal e c o l o g y ." 4 8 ( F o x refers to this approach ast ranspersonal ecology because it is concerned to cultivate a this-world-ly sense or experience of self that includes but also extends be yondone's egoic, biographical, or personal sense of self to include allbeings). The primary concern of transpersonal ecology is the cultiva-tion of a wider sense of self through the common psychological processof identi f ication. That is, it proceeds from a particular picture of theworld or cosmos - that we are all part of an unfolding "tree of life" - toa psychological identification with all phenomena. As Arne Naess putsit, if your sense of self embraces other beings, then "you need no moralexhortation to show care" toward those b e i n g s . 49The ecocentric invitation to cultivate a respectful, "letting be" orienta-tion toward the world does not, however, entail the assertion thatnature is entirely benevolent. In this respect, it is important to empha-size that the ecocentric perspective defended here does not seek toportray nature selectively as something that is essentially harmonious,symbiotic, and benign (ignoring suffering, unpredictability, and change)or as something that has a clearly discernible telos.5~ Indeed, it is notnecessary to an ecocentric perspective to depict nature as essentiallybenevolent in order that humans respect it and "let it be." If we try tojudge the nonhuman world by human ethical standards as to what is"kindly" we will invariably find it wanting.51 Nonhuman nature knowsno humen ethics, it simply is . As explained above, the ecological modelof internal relations seeks to grasp the fundamental nature of ecologicaland social reality. It provides the grounding for an ecocentric perspec-tive, but does not itself make any normative claims as to how we oughtto orient ourselves toward the word . It is the task of ethical and politi-cal theory to decide how we should live given the fact of our fundamen-tal interconnectedness with other beings.
