LIIesserschmitt Bf 10950much has been written in countless articlesaId books about the development of thisnost famous of German fighter aircraft thati:would be superfluous to repeat it all again.

The decisions to build the Bf 109 asGermany's only production single-seatfighter, even though the design's weaknessesvere already known in 1936,and toshelve theHeinkel He 100and delay development of theJock.e-Wulf Fw 190 all contributed a greatc:!ealto the collapse of the German fighteram. The Bf 109's greatest weakness becameapparent during the Battle ofBritain: namely, ilsinadequate range, which resulted in manyfighter pilots failing to reach their bases afterstrenuous air battles and drowning in theInglish Channel. In 1941 in Russia thingsreached the point where Generaljeld-'Marschall Kesselring urgently demandednodification columns to overcome thestructural weaknesses of the Bf 109 F. Theaircraft's narrow-track undercarriage proved(Specially disadvantageous in Russia. Anaddicional problem was the weakness of theaircraft's tail unit, which was never com-plerely overcome. When the Bf109was calledllpon to attack Allied bomber formations in]943-45 its lack of range proved especiallysggravaring. The use of long-range fueltanks and weapons installations beneath thevings reduced the aircraft's performanceconsiderably.

In spite of these weaknesses, the achieve-ments of the German pilots flying the Bf 109vere great, and earned the respect of theirformer opponents. They were forced to flythe Bf 109 because the BMW 801-poweredvers ions of the Fw 190were employed morein the ground-support and fighter-bomber

roles than as fighters. Another factor was thepolicy of Generalfeldmarschall ErhardMilch, who became responsible for air arm-aments following the death of Udet, to avoidthe introduction of new types in order toincrease production of existing designs. Bf109production by year was as follows: 1939- 449, 1940 - 1,693, 1941 - 2,764, 1943-6,247,1944 - 13,786, 1945- 2,969. Thesefigures did not alter the facts that the aircraftwas already obsolescent in 1941 and wasinferior to the North American P-51"Mustang," Republic P-47 "Thunderbolt"and the Supermarine "Spitfire" Marks XII,XIV and XVI.

Asa result ofGeneralfeldmarschall Milch'sstrategy the Bf109was changed and improvedcountless times. Many new versions appeared, all of which are described in the ac-companying tables. Existing models wereincreasingly the subject of modificationscarried out in the field or in factories inGermany. Messerschmitt produced equip-ment kits which, if they were not installedduring manufacture, were stored at theLuftzeugamt Erding from where they couldbe ordered by the units. The so-calledRiistsiitze were manufactured for the E seriesand all subsequent versions. Using these theaircraft could be equipped with additionalarmament, fuel tanks and other equipment. All of the equipment kits resulted in areduction in the Bf 109's speed, maneuver-ability and climb rate.

Examples of the Bf 109 are today main-tained and admired in many countries, suchasAustralia, Finland, South Africa, England, the USA, Yugoslavia and Switzerland. Thereis one Bf 109 E-3 in the Federal Republic

today. The last flying Bf 109,which belongedto the Messerschmitt-Bolkow-BlohmCompany, was lost in an accident at theNeuburg/Donau airfield on 3 June 1983.
