It almost feels like I’m writing the last actof a play. How do I want it to end? Shouldthere be suspense or the potential for themain character to comeback from thedead?

After seven years, 34 issues (including thevolunteer book) and over 1,600 pages,Beyond 50 is retiring. Many ofmy clients andthe community partners are asking why?

Well, September 21 is Laurel’s 50thbirthday and for the past seven years I havespent 99 per cent of my time working, networking and giving back to thiscommunity. I was trying to create financiallystability for Devon,Dallas andmyself, as wellas provide a forum for peoplewhohad greatstories worth sharing. I have always been a girl who givesmore than she takes and now as I approach 50, I decided thatlife has to change. I told Devon and Dallas I wanted to liveuntil I was 108.5 so if I don’t learn to de-stress and spend alittle more time having fun, I won’t make it.

Beyond 50 has been an incredible ride and learning curvefor me, but I’m at a point where I want to enjoy a littledowntime. And for anyone who is self employed, you knowhow hard it is to“turn it off.”

I have said this a lot over the past seven years, and I willkeep saying it - this magazine has been about“serendipity.” Ihave met the most fascinating people, attended a lot offunctions, connected and reconnected with people andmade a impact when and where I could.

The next chapter for Laurel has already begun. I wasfortunate enough to have been hired as the ExecutiveDirector for the Uptown Rutland Business Association(URBA). My Board of Directors are wonderful to work withand the people in the Rutland area are the friendliest youcouldmeet. We have some big plans for Rutland and I am soexcited be one of the catalyst to bring it all together.

My boys are behind me 100 per cent, just as theyhave always been. Devon is currently taking his DiverTraining Certification at Diving Dynamics and Dallas isheading into Grade 11 at KSS. I could never have done thismagazine without the two of them. They put up with a lotfrom me because I wanted to make this dream a reality - Ican’t begin to tell you how much they sacrificed. They have

learned that money isn’t everything and that you need topick a career that makes you happy. Devon and Dallas arealso thrilled that I have found a newpositionwheremy talentand energy is well suited and that I am excited for what’s instore.

There is another group of individuals I need toacknowledge, because if I didn’t have themonmy sideI would never have been able to create such abeautiful publication. Wayne Duchart, my incrediblephotographer, who would do whatever, wheneverwe askedhim to. Lori Johnson, fromDragonfli Studio, whose creativity and talent made us one of the bestlookingmagazines in theOkanagan. JuliannaHayes, who managed to make all our stories flow with hersuperior editing capabilities. Danielle Browne, from

Mitchell Press, who always made us a priority and helped usmeet deadline as best as she could. I also need to thankSharon, from ATM Book-keeping, and Tracey, who did thedistribution. Special thanks to Nikki, Jim and Ryan, at CsekCreative, who helped me take the online version to a wholenew level. We received a lot of compliments, emails andpeople stopping us on the street to tell us how much theyloved our magazine, both in print and online.

Where would this magazine have been without thecontributors and advertisers? Somany people were inspiredby what they read and for some of our readers it motivatedthem to domore. The advertisers believed in our publicationand helped keep it afloat. This magazine was a team effort, and I was proud to be the team leader.

People always tell me howmuchmy children have grown.I like to think that I have grown as well. I was just a lady witha vision and found away tomake it happen. I am not retiring

because I am rich, but I will say theknowledge, friendships and connectionsI’ve made are worth more thanmoney.

Thanks again for being part of myjourney; I hope you enjoyed all the peeksand valleys as much as I did.

ABOUT THE COVER: Now that I am fiftyit’s time for a new chapter in my life.Thank you for supporting Beyond 50.

About seven years ago,a singlemomcame intoour store topurchase a camera to take coverphotos for her newmagazine.Being a professional photographer for over 25 years andhaving done many magazine covers, I knew her chances ofsnapping a good cover on her ownwere slim to none.

My suggestion was to hire a professional photographer todo the job correctly, which would showcase the newpublication in thebestwaypossible. Well, this singlemomwasrunning on a very tight budget that did not allow for thisluxury.

Every day I try to perform one random act of kindness, so Ioffered to photograph the next issue at no charge. Since then,we’ve come to adopt this single mom, Laurel, and her boys asfamily. To see her growandbecome the fabulous person she istoday is priceless. I introduced her into my Rotary club where“service above self “ is the motto. She has excelled there too, winning Rotarian of the Year and being awarded theprestigious Paul Harris award, not once but twice.

Beyond 50 has blossomed into a first-class magazinethanks to Laurel’s hardwork andhigh standards, andherboys

have grown intomen tobeproudof. The unity of her familyand the magazine family is one I am very happy to havebeen associated with this past seven years. The end ofthis publication means a new beginning for Laurel. Her newposition with Uptown Rutland Business Association willgreatly enhance Rutland’s profile. My wifeWendy and I wishonly great things for this fine lady.

continue to find humour in all aspects of this new path, despite the overwhelming fear that I felt.

Hopefully, I have been able to bring a smile to some whomay have read my articles over the last years, while I sharedsome of my experiences.

Every course I have attended at the BC Cancer Agency inKelowna (and I’ve been to them all, some more than once)has providedmewith valuable information and support.Butthe best thing about these courses was the amount oflaughter thatwe shared.Despite the lack of alcohol andgoodfood, thesewere someof the best parties I have ever been to!Who knew that cancer patients and their families could haveso much fun?

I learned the importance of living in the moment, andletting go of the worry that an uncertain future brings. Wecan appreciate what is in the here and now, rather thanalways looking to what will be. Perhaps the true visionary isthe one who chooses to see what is right in front of them, with a clarity and understanding that will enable them tomove forward, step by step, rather than by leaps and bounds.

I am a continual work in progress. Most days I feel like ababy learning to walk for the first time, as I take shaky, uncalculated steps towards my future. And every time I fallonmybutt, in true baby fashion, I have amoment of disbelieffollowed by fits of laughter (and the occasional drool). Andthat’s exactly what my cancer journey has been so far... ashaky walk forward with moments of disbelief, followed by awhole lot of laughter.

So get your diapers on and joinme for a stroll.Wemay notknow where we will end up, but we will have some greatgiggles along the way!

Peace out Beyond 50Magazine...And thank you... I’ve hada blast.

The term, “people of vision," can mean many things tomany people.Sometimes we refer to a visionary as someonewho is idealistic with impractical concepts. Other times, thevisionary is the strong leader who courageously follows thepath of their own convictions. And often times, the visionaryis the one who may stand alone, putting themselves at riskfor ridicule and abandonment by others, while remainingtrue to themselves. But almost always, the visionary lookstoward the future, sees the bigger picture, and remainshopeful for what may come.

Three years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, then10 weeks later with leukemia. When I approached my friendLaurel and asked if I could write an article for her magazine,my intentwas to sharemy journeywith other cancer patientsand their families.

I was determined to face my unknown future with apositive attitude, taking responsibility for my health, andgaining knowledge that would help me to make informeddecisions aboutmy treatment. But,most importantly, I madea vow to myself that I would laugh every day and

Derek Dadd has been visitingIrma for almost seven years andthey are very close. When Derekarrives for a visit, Irma’s eyesshine and her smile never leaves her lips. Derek is atreasured and dependable member of the CNIB VisionMate team, and Irma is his cherished client.

Derek retired to Nanaimo in 1992, after 25 years in the airforce, and started his own business. In Nanaimo hevolunteered for Kiwanis and the RCMP. In 2005 he wasdiagnosed with lymphoma, so he and his wife moved to theOkanagan to be closer to their kids. Derek says for somereason he really can’t explain, he always felt when he retiredhe would like to read to people who are blind, so hecontacted CNIB.

To Irma,Derek and his wife are family. In fact, recently theycelebrated Irma’s 94th birthday together! Irma says thatDerek thinks to do things for her before anyone else hasthought of it, and she is deeply grateful for their friendship.Derek visits Irma consistently each week for at least twohours. They enjoy sitting outside together in the courtyard,or

having a coffee and a chat.Derek often brings his dog Sam tovisit her aswell, which she and the other residents adore.Andthey really love to read together. Right now Derek is readingChicken Soup for the Senior’s Soul to Irma.He gets teary eyedwhen speaking about her, as she means the world to him.

“She is a very, very special lady and I am lucky to knowher,”he says.“She really is family.”

Derek has had five different Vision Mate clients over theyears, but these days he focuses his time solely on Irma. Hehas also volunteered as a driver, served on the Board ofDirectors, and helped set up CCTV readingmachines for CNIBclients.

Derek finished with radiation and chemotherapy in 2008and has been in remission ever since. He is a remarkablevolunteer and person, and his tireless and compassionatework with CNIB clients and staff has been a gift to theorganization, and to Irma.

Just because you’re over 50 and others expect you to beslowing down, doesn’t mean you can’t have vision. Peoplewith vision know that the pathway to success and fortune islitteredwith failure. Peoplewith visionknowthat thepathwayto success isn’t found by doing what everyone else is. Peoplewith vision have to be willing to do what others don’t, andtake a risk. When you do what others don’t do, you will encounter

obstacles. And, because no one has been there yet, no onecan really tell you how to get around them. You have to figureit out on your own. You’ve beenon theplanet long enough toknowwhowins and loses. Thepeoplewhowinare thepeoplewho have vision, and,no matter what their age, stick with it.Over the years, you’ve met naysayers, blockades and

obstacles. It is through these kinds of hurdles you are able tobetter refine and crystallize what your vision looks like andfeels like. Being a person with vision means not being afraidto do what others aren’t doing. It means you have to thinkyour way through things and you should feel unstoppable. Idon’t mean break the law,or throw away your cane; I mean atleast break the boundaries holding you back from achievingyour vision - whether they are people,or objects.

In a way, creating and following a vision is a little likedeciding whether to walk on the safe sidewalk, orventuring on the green grass. I’ve noticed few people walkon green grass, even when there’s nothing stopping them. Why must we feel we should do as everyone else does, evenwhen it does not make sense?I’ve also noticed that the people who walk on green grass, P

taking a shortcut to somewhere, aremore likely not to be riskaverse, and more likely to be creative thinkers - and, yes, visionaries. They are also more likely (in my book), to becritical thinkers. As we age, the ability to use our criticalthinking skills will keep our minds active. My own internal “Idiots Guide to Critical Thinking” simply

tellsme that I should be able to ask objective questions aboutthe situation and decide what would make the most sense. The reverse of critical thinking is going along, doingwhatevereveryone else does, no matter the outcome. The more tripsaround the sun we have, the better we generally become atcritical thinking. That’s a good thing for those over 50!Everyone’s path and everyone’s vision is unique. People

who have vision remember all the naysayers who tried tokeep them on the walkway that everyone else takes. Whenone iswilling to stepoff of the commonpathway andwalk onthe green grass, they are not only using critical thinking, butmoving closer to their vision. Remember, “anything worthdoing, is worth overdoing.”

Helping people, caring about people, and having a genuine interest in others, how they live their lives and relation-ship experiences they have shared, have all led me to open MagnetixMatchmaking.

People all across Canada aretalking about how hard it is to meetsomeone special. Single men andwomen are frustrated and disillusionedwith online dating and the lack ofresults from well meaning friends. Iknew there had to be a better way.Over the past 25-plus years in

business, I’ve had the opportunity toparticipate on many projects. Whilemany of those projects involved differ-ent products or services, the commonthread was working with people andhelping them achieve their goals andfind what they were looking for.During the development and

implementation of these projects, I hadan opportunity to be involved in manyareas including business development, technology (still not very good at thispart), sales and marketing, training, coaching and mentoring, and recruitingthe very best teams (definitely good atthis part). But the part I loved the mostwas helping people get what they wanteither in a new career, a happypositive relationship or fruitful businessconnection.

A visionary at heart, the projects I’vehad the pleasure to be part of havegiven me the framework and founda-tion to successfully open MagnetixMatchmaking. From our early begin-nings in Kelowna, we have expandedto the Greater Okanagan, includingPenticton, Vernon and north toKamloops. We now support singlepeople in Calgary, Edmonton, Saska-toon, Regina and Winnipeg as well. Butwe’ve only just begun. Single men and women across

Canada are telling us how hard it is tomeet someone special. They are lookingfor a different approach to online datingand other methods that have beenunsuccessful. They are looking forsupport and someone to listen to theirstories. Our amazing team of Rela-tionship Consultants is doing just that. My vision has always been to offer

foods that you love because of your dentures? Do you thinktwice before smiling or laughing? Are you tired of messydenture adhesives? There is no longer any reason to suffer with lousy dentures

or partials. Smile, laugh and restore your confidence. Eat whatyou like without worrying your teeth will slip or fall out. A dental implant is a small, screw-like cylinder that replaces

the root portion of a missing tooth. Carefully and preciselyplaced in the jawbone, dental implants help anchor denturesso they do not slip and they can even be used to fix yourdenture in place so that you will never have to remove yourteeth again. Enjoy smiling, eating and life again; dentalimplants can be life changing.Do you have a gap in your teeth? Do missing teeth affect

your chewing? Wear a partial denture that needs to beremoved? Dental implants allow Dr. Chambers to replace oneor more missing teeth by attaching your new teeth to thedental implant without damaging adjacent teeth. Implantsare very natural looking and will restore and enhance yoursmile.

We are all aware that society, as a whole, is becoming lessand less active. This inactivity puts us at a higher risk ofbecoming both acutely and chronically ill, both of which canlead to the loss of one’s independence. The Kelowna FamilyYMCA is committed to building healthy communities, whichincludes keeping older adults strong, healthy, andindependent. Aging is a natural and inevitable process that can have an

impact on one’s physical, mental, social, or emotional health.Although aging cannot be prevented, it can be donegracefully and healthfully. There is substantial evidence thatphysical activity can benefit an aging body, mind, and spirit. The Canadian Physical Activity Guide recommends that olderadults get 30-60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physicalactivity most days of the week. Studies have shown that regular physical activity can slow

the decline of, or even improve one’s motor function, as well as

one’s heart and respiratory health. There is also evidence thatsuggests physical activity improves balance, strength, agility, and a person’s ability to perform activities of daily living. All ofthese aspects of health contribute to a healthy and successfulaging process. Having a regular physical activity routinehas also been proven to reduce risk of chronic conditionssuch as cancer, stroke, heart disease, type II diabetes andmore! On top of all of the physical benefits of exercise there are

plenty of proven psychological and social benefits as well.Including physical activity in one’s daily routine leads to bettersleep patterns, less stress, improved memory, increased

If I had to pick three words to descr ibe Italians, theywould be: family, passion and pride. If you have never had the pleasure of attending a dinner at

the Kelowna Canadian I t a l i a n C l u b o n LawrenceAvenue, you need to go. The individuals who are part ofthis organization are proud, robust and entertainingindividuals. You could attend this dinner alone, yet youwouldn’t feel alone, because the members make everyonefeel welcome. It was in March of 1966 when the club was first

incorporated as a society. It started with 40 members but hasnow grown to over 150 families who are proud to be part ofthis association. In 1998, the clubhouse on Lawrence waspurchased and the main objectives of this group wereestablished to promote culture and education, encourageItalian activities, and assist new Italian immigrants, as well asthose in need. It not only gives to and support its own, it have done a lot

for our community. Here are just a few of the things KCIC havesupported over the past 40 years: • In 1975, the KCIC formed a group of Italian dancers and

singers, which has performed at hospitals, seniors’ homes, shopping centres, weddings, anniversaries, parades, out oftown festivals and for other ethnic clubs.• In 1979, the KCIC constructed the first two bocce alleys at

the Kelowna Recreation Centre, providing members and thepublic the entertainment of one of Italy’s most popular sports.• The KCIC has made various donations to our community

at large. Every February, the club holds a social where moniesare raised for the Variety Club Telethon. It has also supported

the Kelowna General Hospital, Big Brothers, Cancer Society,Japan Tsunami Relief Fund and many more.• In 1976, the club started presenting each year a bursary to

a deserving child entering post secondary education.• KCIC has entered a float in the local Regatta and May Day

parades.• KCIC has participated in Kelowna Folk fest, supplying

ethnic food and entertainment to the public. • In 1976, 1980 and 2009, the KCIC came to the aid of its

mother country, Italy, during the earthquakes.• In May 1983, the KCIC hosted the first ever B.C. provincial

convention of Italian clubs, societies and organizations.• In 1984, the KCIC hosted the first ever Western Canada

convention of Italian clubs, societies and organizations. • In 1991, the KCIC celebrated its 25th anniversary. • In 2011, the KCIC celebrated it’s 45th anniversary.• 2016 will mark the 50th anniversary of the club. Like I said, this group is about family, passion and pride. It is

looking for new members, and if you decide to join, you will beamong some of the elite Italians who have made Kelownatheir home for generations: Casorso, Rampone, and Risso. My recommendations is simple: check out their website to

see when the next Italian dinner is and buy a ticket. You’reguaranteed an incredible meal, lots of fun and you’ll feel likeone of the family. “Mangia bene, vivi felice” translation... “eat well and live

happy.”
